I am selling some guitars on ebay. I've had a couple of inquiries if I would ship to London and The Netherlands.

So I pack the guitar nicely, haul the box to the UPS store to find out.

GREAT GOOGLYMOOGAH!!!!!

$172.00 to London. $154 to The Netherlands.

Does that sound like the usual rate that everybody charges? Are people over there used to paying those rates? Isn't The Netherlands farther away than London? What's up with that?

Can someone help me unbottle my mind?

Sounds about right for something of that size. I had someone overseas buy a camera from me off ebay and it was around $40. I had to fill out customs forms when I shipped it.

I figured this might be the case. I am thinking about trying the post office tomorrow, but if they are going to be about the same amount, why bother?

Try the US Post Office. I have had to RMA some stuff lately and they seem any where from 20 to 50 % cheaper.

Drug mule, if it'll fit up their anus the shipping costs can be quite low. Plus no worries about having to deal with customs when it lands.

USPS or DHL.

Last time I used DHL because they have some countries that they offer low rates. Otherwise, probably the Post Office with insurance

Find a 3rd party shipper that ships through DHL. I have to ship stuff internationally all the time and UPS and Fed EX will just kill you on cost. Typically a good 3rd party DHL shipper can get cheaper rates than you yourself can, and they can pass that discount on to you. One 3rd party DHL shipper i use gets a 60% price break off of retail cost.

USPS is the most cost effective but they have certain size restrictions. If your package exceeds their size restrictions, ship DHL.

Do not use UPS or Fed EX for international.

I have business accounts with all the above, and USPS and DHL are by far the cheaper options.

Wow! This is great information, y'all. I have ZERO experience shipping overseas.

Will definitely try the post office and DHL tomorrow.

Fuck Google, ask the Planet.

Thanks

Yep. I had to mail to South America and Fed X wanted $200 and the USPS did it for $27 and had it there in 3 days.

And people wonder why the USPS is going broke.

Yeah, but it was only a CD. I think $27 is a reasonable fee.
