CareerCast.com, a career website, ranked 200 jobs from best to worst based on five criteria: physical demands, work environment, income, stress, and hiring outlook. To compile its list, the firm primarily used data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and other government agencies. I've interned the past 3 years split between 2 insurance companies, and the most recent of which has offered me an entry-level actuarial position where I'll get to continue to study for future exams about 15 hours a week while at work.

Being smart at math essentially. Obviously there is a lot more to it than simply math (accounting, economics, financial skills), but you could go take a preliminary exam right now if you wanted. There are no specific degree or college education requirements either. If you choose, you can even study the materials on your own to take the exams. Once you pass the preliminary exams you can begin working and continue to take more exams, of which there are 13 in total.

Pretty much this. I always knew I was good at math, so this was the perfect field for me to get into. I actually forgot my calculator when I took the ACT, and still ended up getting a perfect score on both the math and science. :D I only wish I had known this was for sure what I'd wanted to get into sooner, as now I honestly feel like 90+% of my college has been a waste and I would've been better off just undertaking it on my own starting 3 years ago and have been better off for it. Plus, I didn't decide I wanted to go this route until about 2.5 years into college, at which point it would've taken me more than 4 years to graduate had I switched my major to actuarial science. So, instead I've continued pursuing my original major (Quantitative Finance), as well as studying for the actuarial exams, but at least they 2 fields are pretty related, so there is some overlap which helps quite a bit sometimes.

When asked what she should say to encourage young people who want to go into animation and visual effects, a previous employer of mine once told a college professor in front of a near capacity convention hall... "Nothing. Any teacher encouraging a kid to go into animation is not being a responsible adult." (Pause) "That being said, you don't have to tell them anything. Anyone who is supposed to do it will find a way."

She was really disappointed in the answer, but it was hilarious to the crowd of industry vets! Fifteen years later, to her credit, she has developed a great program at her college and at my current place of employment, we have hired several of her grads and they are quite successful. Just in time for the industry to move overseas. :)

I would, although there are cheaper ways and other careers that require less education to make the money I do. But I do love my job and I will always have one. I could move to almost any city tomorrow and find a job instantly.

My experience is that it's harder on the social workers than the doctors.

Yup, the doctors are both trained to be detached(somewhat) and get to hand off the family to the social workers. The buck stops with the social workers.

Yup I could have been a great doc if I never lost and I would have driven myself into the ground to make sure that I didn't lose. I've seen that lifestyle up close growing up and knew the price I would pay. It takes a unique set of individuals which is also part of why Med school is such a PITA.

I never stopped trying to do the impossible, I just a picked a field where the price of failure was a bit lower!:D

Never lose in medicine? I can only think of a couple sspecialties where that is possible. it is still a stretch

Medical school isnt horrible either, just the idea of all the debt and deferred income. I am a 4th year matching emergency medicine and residency will be much worse
