UP Locomotive number 2014 is on her way from Pomona California to Cheyenne Wyoming this week

By John M. Glionna

July 29, 2013, 1:23 p.m.

It has been called the last of the giant freight locomotives, a lumbering behemoth known as the “Big Boy 4014.” For half a century it has been on display at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds in Pomona, drawing railroad buffs from around the nation.

Now the mammoth steam engine is about to take another trip -- to the vast plains of rural Wyoming.

Union Pacific Railroad officials recently announced that the company has reached an agreement to acquire the locomotive from the RailGiants Train Museum at the fairgrounds. The railroad said it plans to move the engine to maintenance shops in Cheyenne, where crews will try to get it back to running condition.

“We’re really excited about the acquisition of the 2014 Big Boy,” railroad spokesman Aaron Hunt told the Los Angeles Times, adding that Union Pacific will post updates about the move, planned for the near future. Updates will be posted on Twitter @RailGiants.

years ago, I flew out to Lake Tahoe just to watch an old steamer locomotive on it's run. that was really neat to see. watched it come over donner pass, across the mountainside near donner lake and then went to a lil town nearby called verdi to put a penny on the track and watch it go by from up close to the tracks.

They brought Big Boy No 4018 to a railroad museum a few miles from my house. They moved a RR museum from Dallas to Frisco, because I guess they ran out of funds and room in Dallas. I'm pretty psyched to have it so close.

Its hard to describe, what running steam is like. nothing else quite like it.
You do it by the seat of your pants. you feel a loco as its running, you smell it, & you listen to it,you watch the gauges all at the same time. & by doing this,it will tell you whats going on.

really? ya think those trucks & roads can keep Americas power plants supplied?

The train-truck debate has been brewing as long as interstates connected major centers of commerce. While railroads reigned supreme for over one-hundred years going back to Abraham Lincoln’s time, trucks are an increasingly visible form of transporting goods over land. (Trains still transport more freight however.)

I was at the Mississippi River near Hannibal a while back, and some signage there was touting barges as carrying way more than trucks and trains. I was quite surprised. I don't remember the numbers and if they were national or just some pro-barge subset. I'd like to see national tonnage numbers.

We have a local steam train up in the hills that everyone born here is obliged to be taken to at least once. You might enjoy riding some of the steam trains we have out here LiveSteam . The redwoods are beautiful to see while riding on one of them.

I dont ride them. I run them, & at Gods speed to I might add :D.

Back in the 40s a passenger engine broke down and stranded people in Denver that were destined for Kansas City. The railroad guys argued over whether or not an engine designed to pull coal out of the mountains could pull people. I know, a pound of humans vs. a pound of rocks. They gambled and hooked up the powerful steam engine...

It maintained a cruise speed of 110 mph while crossing the flat planes north of Omaha. Broke that companies time record. Go figure.

If you like Durango go check out
Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad.
Its all part of whats left of the D&RG narrow gauge that ran through the Colorado san juan mountain range.
They are lot more hands on at Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad as far as the public is concerned. I have fired two different locos up through Windy Pass. You cant feed the coal fast enough.

In 1970, the states of Colorado and New Mexico jointly purchased the portion of the line from Antonito, Colorado to Chama, NM, along with much of the equipment that operated on the line. This section is the most scenic portion of the line, and a part that loops back and forth between the two states. The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad Commission was created by an act of Congress as a bi-state entity to oversee the railroad

The coolest thing about CTSR is they have a steam operated rotary snow plow. & they use it

The UP gets a lot of the glory, but it was the Santa Fe railway (Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe or ATS&F) that was most instrumental in development of the economy in the prairie, especially right around Kansas City. They did a lot of things, like recruiting a bunch of Mennonites from Russia to farm in Kansas. I remember riding one of their passenger trains, the "Super Chief" back in the 1960's when my grandfather was the conductor.

They have steam powered tractor pulls at the show in republic. Better than the county fair IMO.

You need to come up to ours in July . 3rd weekend every year. camp out. its a lot of fun
Some of the best WWII & Korean war stories ever told. Were told to me out here as a young child by different vets sitting around the camp fire at night. Not so much anymore as most have pasted on. But back when I was a grade schooler, these stories always came at night around those camp fires by the men that were sent there.

Just an update. The largest locomotive ever built. Is completely back together and her boiler was filled with in-house steam a few weeks back.
Her maiden run will be to Ogden Utah for the 150th anniversary of the Golden Spike. They will have 844 there as well and from what I'm hearing. Both locomotives will double head back to Cheyenne.

I'm sure it'll make it down here sooner than later.
