Attention will now turn to the draw for the tournament, which is to be conducted on Dec. 6 in Brazil. The 32 teams will be divided into four pots of eight teams each for the draw, with hosts Brazil and the next seven highest-ranked sides in the October 2013 FIFA World Rankings being given the top seeds in Pot 1 and the rest being divided up by geographical criteria to be determined.

This picture is being posted on the American internet; how DARE they put us as the 7th picture?

Seriously, though, I'm hoping that the US can make things interesting this year. How are we expected to do?

I should have added that the eight seeded teams will be: Brazil, Spain, Germany, Argentina, Colombia, Belgium, Uruguay and Switzerland.

Yea I hate our crest...they did a centennial crest this year that is solid and there is movement to just keep the damn thing.

It is hard to tell really. There are a lot of ways it could shake out. Some traditional powers though didn't get seeded I think there is going to be one or two groups of death the likes of which has never been seen.

Oh no, that would be.....unfathomable.

Closest they ever got was the quarterfinals in 2002. Though in 2002 they were sorta screwed and probably deserved to advance to the semifinals.

Was that the year that we got the Colombian player shot to death because of an own goal when we upset them?

Nah that was in 96 when we were just sort of a feel good story.

The 2002 team was more a team of destiny type just had an amazing run and was pretty skilled.

According to Wiki, we placed 3rd in 1930. Or is that not considered valid? Looks like only 13 teams qualified.

I'm kind of interested in soccer, but admittedly ignorant about a lot of it.

My statement was that the football Gods helped Mexico get into the World Cup and we played a part of that with the last minute goal (forgot against who...)

Man, the field in this edition is brutal. 2002 and 2010 were relatively weak World Cups. Our chances of making it to the knockout round can't be very high. If we draw a group with France + Italy/Portugal/Netherlands, our chances to advance will plummet.

A European team has never won a WC in South America. Right now my money would be on Brazil or Argentina.

Here's a draw simulator that's fun to play around with:

It is going to be brutal so many good teams in so many pots yet there isn't the clear favorite this time around though you have to give a nod to Brazil...Spain certainly is not what it has been in the past.

So, soccer noob question.

Has the US ever won a world cup?

For us to win the World Cup would be on the order of magnitude of

-USA beating Russia in 1980 in Hockey
-Francis Oumlet beating Harry Vardon in the 1913 US Open
-The Broncos defeating the Packers to end a 15 AFC Super Bowl losing streak
-Spliting an atom
-Superman reversing time in the 1977 Motion Picture Superman.

In other words it would unpossible.

The Broncos Super Bowl was not monumental at all for the reason you listed.

Best thing we have going for us is that we play Germany last. They'll have already throttled Portugal and Ghana and will likely be on cruise control in anticipation of the rd 16.

If we can finally beat Ghana, tie w Portugal and keep the Germany score close we might sneak into the rd of 16.

How is that F'd in the draw? Did you play with any simulators before hand...there are about a million worse combos than the one we draw.

Is it tough? Sure.

Welcome to the World Cup!
