It's time for me to get a new blender. We tried an Oster last week but it just did not do well with ice. Since this is the primary reason we are getting the blender, we really want it to pulverize ice. Our budget is $100 and under.

I wish I could help, but my choice of blender costs more than you're looking to spend.

This is the top rated Consumer Reports blender. Up against blenders that cost $400+.

Ninja Master Prep Professional QB1004

It's $60 and got an excellent score for crushing ice.

I've been using a black and decker I got at wal-mart for years now. Never had any complaints.

We have the same crappy Oester blender from when we got married 30 years ago. We hardly ever use the blender but use our food processes quite a bit. Here is the list of things I use a blender for:

Crushed ice fru-fru drinks (hardly ever make them)
Milk shakes (too fat -- never make them)
Breakfast Smoothies (never make them)

If we didn't have a blender, I probably wouldn't get one based on what I know about blenders. So what do modern blenders do better than food processors? What do you folks use them for?

I have this one. I only really use it for smoothies in the morning. I use frozen fruit in my smoothies and not ice, so I can't speak it's ability with ice. It replaced my old Cuisanart just fine. I'd add that those blades are legit and probably should be kept clear of small children.

I use a mortar and pestle, its really great for crushing ice. I don't really have a need for crushed ice that often, so it works great for me. I don't know how it would be for everyday ice crushing though.

I went into Willams-Sonoma a couple of nights ago and saw a toaster for sale for $299.

$299 for a toaster? It was a really cool looking toaster, I'll admit. It caught my eye on the shelf. But a toaster is really a pretty simple device. I'm not sure I could justify $299 for what is essentially a large electrical resistor with crumbs.

Only $299? Why so cheap?

I have a Kitchen Aid that I purchased at Lowes (or maybe it was Home Depot) that does a great job with ice and frozen fruit. It may have been just north of $100, though.

I think we have a Ninja. Is that the one where the motor goes on top instead of on the bottom? We don't do a lot of pulverizing ice though. We do fruit. We also do human ears when they're available.

Vitamix is the only way to go period.

But they're 500.00 new.

Try to find a used one on Craigslist.

You'll never own another blender after that.

I have this and we love the fucking thing. It's double your budget, but it also has a food processor if that makes it doable. Well worth it IMO.

Yep. I bought mine a couple years ago, and it's fantastic. Tree he Ninja does not compare. But it's an investment, not a throwaway.

Yeah, well I don't need a $500 blender. Just something that will crush ice every now and then. Spending $100 was our absolute limit. Didn't even want to go that high but was tired of seeing ice rocks in our drinks.

$500 for a blender only needed to occasionally crush ice? Ok.

Nah, if that's all you're doing. But if you do smoothies, I'll put my Vitamix up against a Ninja any day. Is it worth $500? To many, no. I use mine daily, and I don't regret buying it for a second.
