Lions-Falcons in London will kick off at 9:30 a.m. Eastern

Posted by Michael David Smith on December 4, 2013, 2:26 PM EST

ReutersThe NFL is trying something different with a 2014 game in London: An early kickoff.

The league announced today that the Lions-Falcons game on Sunday, October 26 will kick off at 1:30 p.m. UK time, which is 9:30 a.m. Eastern time. That’s believed to be the earliest kickoff in NFL history. (The other two London games in 2014 will kick off at the customary time of 1 p.m. Eastern.)

FOX will broadcast the game nationally as the lead-in to its normal 1 p.m. Eastern kickoffs. And, given that everything the NFL does draws big TV numbers, FOX can probably expect big numbers for this game, too — not as big as a typical Sunday afternoon game, but huge compared to what TV networks normally draw on Sunday mornings.

And that leads to an interesting question: If the NFL follows through with the talk of eventually moving eight games a year to London, will it have all eight of those games kick off at 9:30 a.m. Eastern, and then sell that package of eight games to a TV network? If so, the NFL may have just found another lucrative revenue stream. As if the league’s billionaire owners need it.

3 games in London in 2014 :banghead:

When I lived in Hawaii I thought 630am wake up calls for games was rough....Lions fans in Hawai'i now get a 330am wake up call or a DVR'd game.

Why doesn't Roger Goodell and the NFL just have ONE game per time slot beginning Thursday night and ending Monday night?

We could have 16 GAMES all on TV!!!

Football overdose

I'm sure they make money hand over fist in London, so they aren't going to stop doing it.

It seems like Goodell wants a model where almost every game can be nationally televised. Thursday night, Sunday morning, afternoon, night, Monday night. Sometimes, early Monday night and late Monday night.

It wouldn't take but a few more slots to get there.

That might be another reason the NFL likes London. We are sort of running out of US cities large enough+ enough money to be able to support an NFL franchise.

It would actually be kind of cool to have a 7:30 kickoff in Mountain Time. I'd get up, have a little juice, watch the game, and then have the whole day ahead of me to do other stuff.

There are markets to support an NFL franchise, as long as you value the integrity of the game over making money.

Serious question... has Goodell done anything for the game that's improved it? What a fucking joke.
