Just installed a new thermocouple, turned the gas back on, held the button down, lite the damn thing.....held it for 1 minute ( 20 sec. is enough ) and it goes out.

Air draft ? ..... None
Dirt in the gas line .....None
To close or too far away from the gas tube .... nope, checked it, has a tube opening that it slides into for the right distance.

What's next ? Gas valve ?

Anybody ?

Had trouble with a hot water heater we bought just about 13 months ago, thought it was the thermocoupler, but was too new for that. Called the local guy I bought it from, and he told me to bring the whole heating element in,and he'd take a looke at it. When I got there he said,"oh! one of those". Flipped a switch on a sensor, said it would work now. Appararantly, OSHA came out with a new safety protocol, where the whole burner was sealed up, no outside air could enter, plus put a sensor/switch in the line. When it gets too hot, the switch trips, and pilot light won't stay on. Don't know if your furnace is like that or not, but just a thought?

No such thing on any furnace. Plus if his furnace has a standing pilot it means it was made back before they put any sort of safety devices on them at all.

S'pose the pilot valve may be sticking, could try banging on it to free it up, I've had that work with sticky main valves.

Make sure that the end that goes into the gas valve is all the way down to get good contact, use a torch to get the end of the thermocouple good and hot, if that doesn't work try another thermocouple.

worth a try - take some sandpaper and lightly scuff the thermocouple...usually only an issue on old thermocouples, but hey, it's free

There is a slight chance he install a thermalsingle instead of a thermocouple.

Pictures?
Measure the voltage coming out of the thermocouple.
What brand gas valve?

Is the pilot putting out good flame on the new thermocouple?
