Saban, Alabama reach long-term agreement
December 13
BY JOHN ZENOR
AP Sports Writer

Alabama coach Nick Saban is staying put.

Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron, right, is congratulated by head coach Nick Saban, left, as Jeff Purinton, football media relations director, watches after McCarron won the Maxwell Award during the College Football Awards show in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013.

The school announced on its Twitter account Friday night that the football coach has reached "a longterm agreement" to remain with the Crimson Tide.

Alabama didn't release terms of the new deal, which must be approved by the board of trustees.

The agreement quells speculation that Saban would take over at Texas if Mack Brown steps down. Saban, who turned 62 on Oct. 31, has led the Tide to three national championships in the past four years. No. 3 Alabama will play Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl.

Saban received an eight-year deal in March 2012 worth about $5.6 million annually.

Is this right? If he received an 8 year deal in 2012 what do they consider a long term deal?

Whatever will keep him away from Texas.

If he's under contract to Alabama until 2020 how could he go to Texas?

Contracts in college mean nothing they all have buy outs so coaches can leave. It's really a year to year thing

So this is nothing more than bama throwing millions more his way to keep his eyes from wandering.

Pretty much. Any coach can buy out of his contract and go anywhere he wants in the broken college system. They sign contracts for more money one year then leave the very next year for even more money somewhere else

This doesn't mean anything.

Steve Alford signed a 10 year contract with New Mexico and then a few weeks later left for UCLA.

Long term contract extensions for coaches in college sports are a joke.

yep contracts in college are dumb, then if the coach performs poorly you still owe him that money, but the coach doesn't owe the school jack shit.

The only way a contract might mean something is if that coach didn't have a buyout in his contract but no coach will do that these days

According to TideSports.com, the contract is expected to pay Saban between $7 and $7.5 million per year, a nice upgrade from his current $5.4 million in compensation. Saban was already the highest paid coach in the game

7.5 million is a nice haul and I'm surprised Texas didn't offer more. There were rumors that Texas offered a 10/100 contract with 1% rights to the Texas network...that had to be a bunk rumor.

I think Andy Reid gets 7.5 per year, too.

aTm (the 5th place team in the SEC) shit all over Oklahoma (the 2nd place team in the Big 12) in the Cotton Bowl. What does Stoops do? He runs his mouth about the SEC being overrated. Now, he gets Alabama. This should be good. Saban just shit all over Mack, and now he's going to shit all over Stoops.

Has a coach ever left the NFL while currently being successful for a college program?

This was what I was thinking. NFL coaches don't leave successful programs for a college team. They only leave when the program fails or is down.

Yeah, I'll enjoy that one.

All the Saban to Texas talk was just wishful thinking on the part of Bevo and his ornaments in the rest of the conference. Saban is in his 60s now, and in his own words he's too damn old to start over again, and he wants to finish his career in Tuscaloosa.

Maybe 10 years ago you could see it, because moving from the SEC to the Big 12 would mean he'd probably never lose a game again and he'd have been in the title game every year since they are an AQ, but what would that prove?

Maybe he wants to stay as king of the hill on the biggest hill.

It will be fun to see who gets the Texas job now that they're through daydreaming.

If I were Texas, I'd roll out the red carpet for Shaw from Stanford. He likely won't leave Stanford, but he'd be first on my list.

They're gonna be all about getting the biggest name though, not necessarily the best coach.
