What's a fitting way to execute a man labeled "worse than a dog"?

If an unconfirmed newspaper report is to be believed, by stripping him naked, throwing him in a cage, and feeding him alive to 120 hungry hounds. NBC News picks up Hong Kong-based paper Wen Wei Po's account of how Kim Jong Un did away with his uncle, Jang Song Thaek, last month.

Its report claims Jang and his five closest aides were set upon by a pack of hunting dogs that hadn't eaten in days as Kim and his brother, flanked by 300 officials, watched; the report hasn't been verified.

Wen Wei Po, which has close ties to China's Communist Party, added Jang and his allies were "completely eaten up" in the "quan jue," or execution by dogs — a break from the usual execution by firing squad — over the course of an hour, the Straits Times notes.

Though Kim has championed the execution, there's been no official word from Pyongyang on how it was carried out. The Times sees the publication of the account as an indication that Beijing is none too pleased with North Korea in the wake of the execution and "no longer cares about its relations with the Kim regime."

This follows a previous report that claimed that two of Jang's top men who were killed prior to his own death were executed using antiaircraft machine guns.

Pretty sure that was a horrible way to go, eaten alive by dogs? The story that North Korean President Kim Jong-un had his uncle Jang Song Thaek executed by throwing him to a pack of rabid dogs was already drawing skepticism when it went viral a few days ago.

It appears now the story was likely satire. On Monday, Reuters cited a blog post by software engineer Trevor Powell, which noted that the story originated from a post on the satirical Chinese site Tencent Weibo claiming that Jang had been thrown to “120 dogs.”

As you can tell from Tencent Weibo’s background of Jong-Un giving everybody the finger, the site is probably not the most dispassionate source for North Korean events:


The story gained an aura of legitimacy when it was republished by Hong Kong newspaper Wen Wei Po, where it was viewed almost 300,000 times, and from which it was picked up by major Western media outlets.

Thanks to North Korea’s isolation, accurate reports of the government’s activities are difficult to come by, and thanks to its reputation for brutality outsized tales of such behavior are readily believed. (For instance, before the dogs story, rumors had already been swirling that the Jong-un had ordered this and several other executions while severely intoxicated.)

For now, however, the original and most plausible story—that Jong-un had his uncle killed by a firing squad—will have to be brutal enough.
