Weston Dressler is a slot receiver from the CFL who has been an all-star multiple times. He will work out for the Chiefs this week, according to reports from Canada.http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2014/1/13/5303536/kansas-city-chiefs-free-agent-workout-cfl-player

I don't know how well his game translates over to the NFL. I haven't seen a single clip yet where he has to start from a set position on the LOS and beat some form of press coverage. Every play I've seen has him get a running start which allows him to avoid any press coverage and run right by DBs who are starting from more traditional sets. He'll get stonewalled in the NFL. Won't make it out of camp.

Boerichter wasn't awful.

It's funny how we always view him as a decent WR even though he played on one of the most potent offenses in the past 20 years. I mean, Sippio would've been able to get open with all the weapons they had.

It will be hard to find evidence of that cause all receivers in the CFL get a running start. He can also return kickoffs and punts and has been quite successful at that in the past.

I'm just interested to see how his tryout goes since i've been watching him for the last 6 years in the CFL and he's finally getting a chance.

I think the reason this is exciting is personnel wise, this team has seen a vast improvement in the talent of their depth players. Really, that was the main improvement this year over last year, quarterback aside. I'm not downplaying the importance of improvement from the QB position, or coaching even. More often than not this year though, the depth guys stepped in and played well when needed. I think Dorsey has shown between one season here and his career in GB, he has a good eye for rough talent. I just hope his success evaluating talent continues.

Here's a neat little nugget.

In 1983, Dieter Brock was traded from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for quarterback Tom Clements (in 2000 was the QB coach for the Chiefs and now is the current Packers OC). This trade led to an exciting Grey Cup in 1984, as the Tiger-Cats and Blue Bombers faced each other in the championship game. Brock's Tiger-Cat team lost the game to Clements's Blue Bombers and Brock ended his career with many accomplishments, but without a Grey Cup victory. In 1985 Brock played for the Los Angeles Rams before retiring from football. Technically a rookie during his one season with the Rams, Brock led the team to an NFC Championship Game matchup with the Chicago Bears, and set team rookie records for passing yards (2,658), touchdown passes (16), and passer rating (81.8)

Updated: Riders release Weston Dressler to pursue NFL dream

REGINA - The Grey Cup-champion Saskatchewan Roughriders released all-star slotback Weston Dressler on Thursday.

The move wasn’t a surprise. Dressler, 28, was scheduled to become a free agent Feb. 15 and was exploring his NFL options.

This allows Dressler, who earlier this month worked out for the Kansas City Chiefs, to sign an NFL deal immediately.

“Ever since the first time I touched a football its something I dreamed about, is having an opportunity to play in the NFL on the game’s biggest stage,” said Dressler. ”Money wasn’t a factor for me in this decision. Its a decision based on an opportunity. A situation that I feel that I have a very good chance to make a football team.”

Riders assistant GM Jeremy O’Day said this all could happen very soon.

“Weston and his agent were very up front they were going to go through the process and we were made aware of a possible situation coming up in the next couple of days where Weston was more than likely going to get an opportunity,” O’Day told reporters. “From our standpoint it’s tough to lose such a good player that’s been here for a long time, is a leader in the locker-room.

“But again, you’ve got to feel happy for him that he gets that opportunity. He hasn’t gone through the process of being in the NFL and as any competitor you just want to see how you compare with the best available players. We wish him the best.”

The five-foot-eight, 179-pound native of Bismarck, N.D., has spent the past six seasons in Regina, having registered 442 catches for 6,531 yards and 43 TDs. He has surpassed the 1,000-yard receiving plateau five times in his career, including the last four years.

Dressler had five catches for a game-high 81 yards and a touchdown in Saskatchewan’s 45-23 Grey Cup victory over Hamilton.

Dressler is a two-time CFL all-star and was the league’s top rookie in ’08. He says he hopes Rider fans will continue to cheer him on in his career.

“I would like to say that the team I am talking with I’ve mad a request for a certain jersey number,” he told reporters. “I requested jersey number 13 because I wanted to kind of show my respect to the 13th man of Ridernation. If everything works out the way that i’m hoping, I’ll be able to wear 13 on Sundays and Rider Nation will be out on the field with me.”

“For the team obviously it’s not great news,” O’Day said. “But it’s our job to find good players and hopefully we’ll be able to replace him.”

No #13 on the team.

Very similar actually.

Welker got his shot earlier, but both are undersized guys who absolutely tore shit up at the college level.

This dude can flat out play football.

I wish him nothing but the best, and I hope he defies the odds and works out with whatever team signs him. These guys who fall through the cracks, or develop in different leagues, and make it later are good for the game.

I don't think anybody really wanted Printers (at least until Hutard, et. al. sucked the nutsack), but his melt down "What do you want me to do? I made chicken salad out of chicken shit!" was absolutely epic and glorious.

Sippio dudes (my dad was the biggest offender) actually wanted.

Printers was nothing compared to Bobby Sippio.

I was at one of those destitute Chiefs games in '07 or '08, whenever Sippio was here. I was sitting in the north end zone about 15 rows up, the Chiefs were on O marching away. Sippio was split out wide let, Gonzo was in the slot let, Bowe wide right. Gonzo goes in motion to the other side, Huard (Croyle?) play actions and throws a dump for like four yards. Sippio ran a streak route, and nobody went with him. Nobody. He's flailing his hand in the air, and Huard (Croyle?) never even considered looking out there. No safety, no defensive back, nothing. It was then I knew that Sippio would not lead us to the promised land.

My Sippio story, for your consideration.

Among biggest challenges for Weston Dressler in NFL is turning age 29 in June. Chiefs likely won't wait be patient to development him.

Some of that secondary play in the CFL is on par with Kendick Lewis et al.

That said, he can catch and seems to have a bit of speed. Probably cheap as well...

Good interview. Nice highlight film. Plays well in space. We just need to see how he plays in traffic.

Hopefully this works out for us although I am interested in seeing Hemmingway and Jenkins get more snaps in the offense.

yea, i think so.

They probably think he will get a pretty good offer so were going in a different direction. DmC is a nice little player but he's not worth the #2 WR money that somebody is likely to offer him.

All the new guys will compete for McClusters touches

On tape WR Michael Campanaro seems to have more burst. Does this mean we are no longer interested in Campanaro? I can't imagine we would have two guys of this stature on the roster. Campanaro was/is a stud for his size.

Dante84

We can trot out 90 for camp and let them duke it out.

This signing doesn't eliminate any other options. Right now, Dressler is JAG at best.

I don't think it means anything other than that Reid/Dorsey continue to believe that WR is a key position of need on offense. I imagine we are going to have quite the WR army at training camp this year.

Chiefs sign CFL's Weston Dressler

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs have signed Canadian Football League wide receiver Weston Dressler to a contract. The sides agreed to the deal last week.

I'll have more to say about the 28-year-old Dressler on Wednesday. He's a diminutive (5-foot-8, 172 pounds) player who projects as a slot receiver. He also has returned kicks.

In six seasons for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Dressler caught 442 passes for 6,531 yards and 43 touchdowns. Last season, his numbers were 70 catches for 1,011 yards and 9 TDs. Dressler played in college at North Dakota.

As I wrote last week, this move threatens Dexter McCluster's roster spot. McCluster has been the Chiefs' slot receiver and punt returner, but he is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent.
