View Full Version : Football Scott Pioli In Talks With The Texans?

WTF?

After a disastrous 2-14 season the Texans fired Gary Kubiak and hired Penn State coach Bill O'Brien. There has been much talk as to why everyone got a pink slip but GM Rick Smith. Rick Smith was not involved in O'Brien's hiring process.

Now there is speculation around Houston that Bob McNair is entertaining the notion of Scott Pioli becoming the new GM replacing Rick Smith.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/writer/jason-la-canfora/24414020/more-front-office-changes-could-be-in-store-for-the-houston-texans

"McNair used an outside firm to lead his coaching search, not GM Rick Smith, who is very well regarded and who has had a very strong relationship with ownership.

Some have speculated that former Chiefs GM Scott Pioli, who worked with O'Brien in New England (the two also share an agent), could eventually join that franchise in some capacity as well."

Must suck to be a Texans fan.

I think Pioli could potentially do well.

His biggest issues here were (a.) his megalomania and micromanaging, and (b.) his way-too-cheap behavior in the offseason.

His drafts were pretty good during his time here, and the salary floor demands he goes out and gets bigger acquisitions with a better hit rate. As for the megalomania and micromanaging, well, nothing like getting fired humbles you.

He's also going to have to learn to think outside the Brotherhood of Parcells.

He better hope and pray that Bill O'Brien is a great coach. If he has to hire another one, the Texans are going to get fucked hard. Just like we were.

Also, Pioli's drafts AT BEST were average. 2009 and 2010 were abortions (no, he does NOT get credit for picking Berry). 2011 averages out solely because of Houston. 2012, a draft a lot of people hated, may wind up being his best one.

All in all, a pretty fucking meh record.

If anyone is going to hire Pioli, the only way it has a chance of doing anything would be to ensure he has no power, lock him in a room, and make him watch film and scout. Sort of like Lombardi in Cleveland. The coach would also need to be a genius, have the authority to tell him to STFU, and make sure he lucks into a franchise QB...

heh...good one.

Not really, this guy is a Patriot Way apologist through and through.

Where O Where has the "Patriot Way" gotten anyone outside of Foxborough?... that group, that success will NEVER be recreated... the ONLY one who went on to anything was Dimitroff.

But even he was exposed without the expertise and help he had in building a defense... ATL is all offense, they've been a weak D since his arrival... its all chemistry and luck, no "Way" has the lock on the perfect formula and the sooner teams figure this out the better off they'll be.

Teams trying to recapture lightning in a bottle are DOOMED... if you dont have Tom Brady and a solid eye for defensive talent... the "Way" sucks, period.

whoman69
01-21-2014, 05:34 PM
Bellichick ran the show in New England and Pioli got the rep. Pioli didn't really add to the talent while he was in KC. He did do a good job for the most part of keeping the talent that was here. You don't get bonus points for recognizing that you already have some talent. Biggest decision in KC was bringing in Matt Cassel, a huge mistake that cost us big in the cap for an unproven QB, locked up the position financially, and cost us draft picks. Cassel came along with Mike Vrabel, who was used up. Pioli also left us well under the cap every year despite the fact the team had no depth and obvious holes.

Whats interesting is that the Patriots won all their titles when they basically had a bunch of no names on offense except for Brady.

It feels like their defense hasnt been truly dominating for at least 8 years or so, or whenever they won that last Super Bowl.

But whatever...as long as Brady can play at a high level, they will be a threat.
