View Full Version : Football Who Got Beat Up the Most?

Been watching an ESPN special about Archie Manning's life. Have a lot of respect for him. He played 14 seasons and never had a winning season.

Got me thinking, which NFL QBs do you think took the worst beatings during their career? Guys I would nominate, Archie would be number one:

Also:

Vinny Testaverde
Steve DeBerg
David Carr
Neil Lomax

Any nominees?

Byron Leftwich. Never have I seen a quarterback get lit up play after play after play. Seems like every time he released the ball he had a helmet buried in his chest about 0.5 seconds later

It's an interesting question, because the QB would have to be good enough to stay in the league a long time, but play on teams with terrible offensive lines that gave up a lot of sacks. Those two things are usually opposites, bad lines get QB's killed, and knocked out of the league eventually.

I think Chad Pennington might be another nominee.

Roethlisberger takes a lot of hits, and that's not even counting courtroom proceedings. However, it's hard to pick any modern-era QB.

IMO, Manning got beat up worse than anyone. He played for some really bad Saints teams than got traded to a worse Houston Oilers team. Sad...

A QB didn't have to play for bad teams with poor O-Lines to take a lot of hits.

Johhny Unitas and Kurt Warner stood in the pocket waiting for big plays to open up, and they consistently took a pummeling.

I tried to come up with someone else just to be contrary, maybe Randall Cunningham. He has the reputation of being Superman but he was sacked a LOT. I remember his first year, when Jaworski got in a 3rd and forever situation, Buddy Ryan would throw Randall out there to the wolves, just to see if he could do something.

But, it has to be Archie. Every time I ever saw him he was just running for his life.

Among QBs who played 5 or more seasons, here are the 25 QBs who took the most sacks per season.

One could make a pretty good argument for Drew Bledsoe as an immobile QB who played a long time and took a lot of sacks every year. Or maybe you just go with Lomax even though his career was shorter. I don't remember him as being a running QB; anyone else recall?

I don't remember Lomax getting hit so much. Then again, he probably doesn't either.

Aside: I mostly remember Neil Lomax and that run and shoot 1980 Portland State team ambushing my hometown Delaware State 105-0. That's not a typo.

Here's an interesting coincidence. Marino and PManning have each been sacked exactly 270 times in their careers as of the end of 2013. They're tied for 48th most sacks.

Out of 253 QBs who have taken at least 50 sacks in their career, Marino is ranked 122nd in sacks per game and PManning is 113th.

85th-most sacks per game for Montana
45th for Brady. He takes more hits than most per season.

I should note that these stats don't account for injuries, so for example Brady's stats are diluted by the fact that he missed almost a full season for injuries.

Among QBs who have taken at least 50 sacks in their careers, the fewest yielded per season is mostly a bunch of guys who were career backups with notable playing time. I suspect that a bunch of old-timers aren't getting all of their sacks counted, too.

This list probably doesn't mean much.

I tend to think the trend is QBs getting better, but he was a real specimen with unrivaled running and passing skills, maybe Steve Young.

Remember, he had a great later chapter with Minnesota performance-wise. But team is as cursed as we are.

The more I think about it, it's got to be Randall Cunningham. He's got the 4th-most sacks overall (484), and the 15th-most per game over a 17-year career. But the kicker is that he only had 200 or more passing attempts in 9 seasons. He averaged 3.01 sacks in every game in which he appeared, and given his running you know that he turned a fair number of sacks into short gains. He averaged 3.6 sacks per start over his career.
