Former University of Missouri star Brock Olivo is returning to his home state.
Lions running back Brock Olivo avoided a Chiefs defender and gained 19 yards on a kick return during a 1999 game at Arrowhead Stadium. Olivo rushed for the third most yards in Mizzou history during his three-year career as a Tiger.
A football spokesman for Coastal Carolina University confirmed Thursday that Olivo will be leaving the Chanticleers' staff to become the Chiefs' assistant special teams coordinator.
The news was first reported on the website for Repubblica TV, an Italian all-news television station. Olivo, 37, will replace Kevin O'Dea, who left Chiefs coach Andy Reid's staff this offseason to become the head special teams coach under new Tampa Bay coach Lovie Smith.
To replace O'Dea, special teams coach Dave Toub went with a person he grew familiar with during his 10-year run as the University of Missouri's strength coach from 1989-1998.
Olivo, who grew up in St. Louis and tallied the third-most rushing yards in Missouri history with 3,026, played at Missouri from 1994-1997.
After his five-year NFL career drew to a close, Olivo spent a year playing in the Italian Football League. He later became the head coach and offensive coordinator of the Italian national football team and spent some time as a running backs coach with the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League.
Olivo joined Coastal Carolina's staff in 2012 to coach the running backs and assist on special teams, and helped the Chanticleers rush for 199.23 yards per game in 2012, which was 25th among FCS teams, and 252.1 in 2013, which was eighth among FCS teams.
With the Chiefs, he'll be joining one of the league's best special teams units. The Chiefs led the league in total kick and punt return touchdowns with four.
A spokesman for the Chiefs had no comment.
