Former MU star Brock Olivo to join Chiefs coaching staff

Former University of Missouri star Brock Olivo is returning to his home state.

Lions running back Brock Olivo avoided a Chiefs defender and gained 19 yards on a kick return during a 1999 game at Arrowhead Stadium. Olivo rushed for the third most yards in Mizzou history during his three-year career as a Tiger.

A football spokesman for Coastal Carolina University confirmed Thursday that Olivo will be leaving the Chanticleers' staff to become the Chiefs' assistant special teams coordinator.

The news was first reported on the website for Repubblica TV, an Italian all-news television station. Olivo, 37, will replace Kevin O'Dea, who left Chiefs coach Andy Reid's staff this offseason to become the head special teams coach under new Tampa Bay coach Lovie Smith.

To replace O'Dea, special teams coach Dave Toub went with a person he grew familiar with during his 10-year run as the University of Missouri's strength coach from 1989-1998.

Olivo, who grew up in St. Louis and tallied the third-most rushing yards in Missouri history with 3,026, played at Missouri from 1994-1997.

After his five-year NFL career drew to a close, Olivo spent a year playing in the Italian Football League. He later became the head coach and offensive coordinator of the Italian national football team and spent some time as a running backs coach with the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League.

Olivo joined Coastal Carolina's staff in 2012 to coach the running backs and assist on special teams, and helped the Chanticleers rush for 199.23 yards per game in 2012, which was 25th among FCS teams, and 252.1 in 2013, which was eighth among FCS teams.

With the Chiefs, he'll be joining one of the league's best special teams units. The Chiefs led the league in total kick and punt return touchdowns with four.

A spokesman for the Chiefs had no comment.

Kansas City Chiefs: Coastal Carolina running backs / special teams Brock Olivio has accepted a position with the Chiefs per Ryan Young and Dave Matter. Matter reports that Olivio will serve as assistant special teams coach with the Chiefs.

Looks like this could be the only staff change this year

If the entire team was from Mizzou, I feel they could give Alabama a run for their money.

I wonder if this is an attempt to groom Toubs replacement in prep for if he gets HC calls next offseason.

He interviewed for the Dolphins job in 2011, the bears job last year and was interviewed for the Redskins HC spot this offseason.

Has there ever been a ST coach who has gotten to the ranks of HC?

Curious minds want to know.

Frank Ganz.

He died in Dallas on April 27, 2009, from complications following knee replacement surgery.
