I've seen talk of these in a few cooking threads, and I'm a huge fan of them. They are simply incredible thermometers for cooks.

Anyhoo, Thermoworks is doing an open box sale if you're interested in one or need a backup.

I smoke pretty often, and when I was back home, I used my brother's remote thermometer, and I dont think I'll ever go back.

Basically you clip one thermometer onto the grill surface, and the other into the meat, and the wires connect to an external display. You can then set a Max and Min temp window for both air and meat.

There's a second, remote hand held display that synchs up with the first. You can then go inside if its cold and watch football. The thing beeps at you if either of your temps go outside the desired range.

It was fucking sweet.

Thanks for this. I couldn't justify paying $200 for a thermometer to myself, but this is much more reasonable. I'll try to convince myself of the worth over the next couple of hours.

It's completely worth it... mine broke a couple months ago, and I immediately got online and bought another.

Ditto. And I have a pretty nice one (dual temp) and all and it's key to a perfect long smoke.

That being said, there's a LOT about it that just pisses me off! If I weren't in IT I'm not sure I'd be as mad, but it's obvious some of the programmers were stoned when they wrote the code/made up the programming steps. And were scared of a few extra buttons too! So it works great, but the logic behind it seems to be very HP calulator'esque...

Hell, I might look into that iPad version (I'd need another iPad first!!) next. It's super-sweet, and engineered towards Apple people.

With the iGrill, there's no need to carry around a separate device like other wireless thermometers. Just monitor your food using the free iGrill app from your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch or Android device.

I clicked the link to check it out. The front page had 3 different models, and the one that looks like the one you've got in your post is supposedly android compatible.

Yeah, and mu Samsung Infuse AND not even the newer Samsung tablet device... Seems like the warning in the Play Store to verify on the manufacturer's site for compatibility is a pretty good idea! Supposedly because the iGrill hardware device uses a non-standard bluetooth or something like that!

Well THAT sucks!

I understand the concept, and I'm not one to overly criticize anyone for an exorbitant culinary tool purchase (my knife bag and it's contents testify to this), but a hundred clams for a simple probe thermo-coupler is a lot.

I've got three different thermo's in my knife bag right now and I can't remember bitching about how much time they took or if they weren't accurate and I don't think I spent over $10 on any of them.

I mean, that's 1/3 of the way there to a pretty nice knife...

Honestly, I'd use it once in a blue moon.

I use the tried and true method of poking shit with my finger for final determination of doneness.

I guess that's why I don't have a hydraulic floor lift in my garage and use floor-jack/jack-stands instead; I'd only use a full-on hydraulic floor lift once in a blue moon.

Then again, maybe you use the other method because you don't have a good/fast electronic device like this. Maybe??? There's no question, both methods work, the electronic method just works better.

And I'd say this too, if you're into cooking/grilling/smoking it's no big deal. FMB and a few of us really like to cook, so what we'd spend on this toy means little compared to the craziness (sometimes) of that month's ingredients for what we're making. I'm into photography and dropping $100 on something is easy. My cash-poor neighbor (as he loves to say) always has coin for new tires, headers, stereos, and junk for his car. I drop $200-$300 on a bat for a kid's baseball dreams. Oh, and LOL, I used to drop $200-$300 on tix for a Chiefs game PER GAME!!!!

What does all that mean???? If you're into something, spend the money, you're worth it!

I posted this earlier in the food thread:

Small things make me excited. I'm very stoked. One of my Thermapens has been on the fritz for a while due to a busted battery cap on the back. The little clippy thingy that holds the cap and battery in place broke some time ago. It works, but you have to hold pressure on the cap.

In a stroke of clarity this morning, I took the silicone sleeve off my primary Thermapen and put it on the secondary, and IT WORKS!

So I just ordered another, and soon I'll be back to two fully functional Thermapens!

PBJ

Just to follow up because I'm seriously impressed, I tweeted my excitement this morning and Thermoworks responded. My busted pen is 5 years out of warranty, but they wanted to know which pen was broken, then said they'd send replacement caps for both pens, "just to be safe."

I haven't been able to convince myself to shell out that much coin for a Thermopen yet, and current family situations require that all money be saved in case of emergency. One of these days I'll do it though.

It is also great for high temperature grilling, you just leave the temperature control thermometer out of the grill so it is constantly pumping air in to increase the heat.

The cheap Wal Mart thermometer I have takes close to a minute to get the reading. By that time, I've lost 20+ degrees in my Traeger. Cold weather it drops even faster.

Your point is very valid, but 1/4 is an exaggeration. You can routinely find the Thermapens on sale for $79.

That CDN you linked is the one ATK recommends if you don't want to spend the money for the slightly better (but not 3x better) Thermapen.

For me, Thermoworks has earned some significant brand loyalty to me for their customer service. Those guys absolutely rule all.

"Thermapens are rarely returned so we almost never have enough units to hold an "Open Box Sale." We have finally collected a small number of Classic Thermapens here (and from the factory in England) that, for various reasons, we will not sell as new units. Some have slightly damaged packaging, there are a few sales demos, a tiny number are returns, a few have minor cosmetic flaws, and an even smaller number might be "refurbished" to like-new condition after very short term use"

Tell me about these grates. I've had my eye on a set for a couple months now.

Outstanding product! I bought 3 to cover 1/2 of my grill surface. I spray them down with Pam to "cure" them and so food won't stick. They heat up to around 150 degrees hotter than the dome temp so you can literrally cook a 1" steak in approximately 5 minutes for medium rare. They are easy to clean and I love the groves they have to rotate sausage accross the cooking surface. I have had them for about 8 months and can't say enough about the product. I discovered them on YouTube and decided to check them out for my self. Check it out...

Also, my setup is exactly the same as his. Same grill and same Grill Grate setup.
