The Vikings released linebacker Erin Henderson on Friday. The move, which will save the team $2.1 million in cap space next season, was inevitable, given Henderson's rocky end to last season.

Henderson, 27, was arrested twice on drunken driving charges in a little more than a month, first on Nov. 9 in Minneapolis and next on New Year’s Day in Chanhassen. The first arrest caused Henderson to miss the Packers game in Week 12 because of “personal reasons.”

Henderson, who declined comment Friday, said after the first arrest that he needed the time away to self-reflect, sensing a change was needed ... until he made the same mistake again after the season ended.

The 2008 undrafted free agent out of Maryland spent six seasons with the Vikings. He played in 14 games last year and finished second on the team with 134 tackles.

Audie Cole made his first career start against Green Bay, replacing Henderson at middle linebacker, and had 11 tackles. Henderson’s reps decreased, with Cole receiving a larger role on defense until he was placed on injured reserve with a sprained ankle heading into the final game of the season.

Cole will be entering his third season. Second-year players Michael Mauti and Gerald Hodges are also expected to play larger roles next season.

Not good enough of a player to bother with.

No team is going to give him what he was going to get on his old contract with the Vikings. He'd come cheap. And I can't see the transition to the ILB spot in the 3-4 being that much of a hurdle provided he stays sober.

I'd give him a shot if he's cheap.

this seems like a buyer beware, if he was worth a shit Zimmer, a defensive guy coming from the jailbird Bengals would have kept him. Zimmer had tons of players with off field problems in Cincy and had no problem coaching them up.

They tried replacing this guy in the draft (Gerald Hodges) and by signing Desmond Bishop (he got hurt, as usual). I think the writing was on the wall for a long time before even the drunk driving stuff.

We should trade for him like he was Jared Allen.

Akeem Ayers was the least of our problems last hear so i wouldnt be too concerned with finding his replacement.

*Jordan.

And he's a free agent. We don't know yet what Dorsey's planning.

Awesome! A MLB with a drinking problem. Haven't we gone down this road before?

I'm guessing it's why we drafted Nico Johnson.

We need another mlb who is similar to DJ. The whole "need a big thumper" bs needs to die. Get another big athletic guy who can run and play all three downs in there.
