Because I understand what I'm watching and therefore am able to notice when a team isn't giving any effort defensively (and KU didn't for the entirety of the first half). Do you seriously think the fact that TCU stopped scoring in the 2nd half had nothing to do with KU raising its intensity level?

Effort always plays a role. Players don't bring a consistent level of that from game to game (or in the case of this version of KU, from minute to minute). This is even more obvious in professional basketball with its 82 game schedule (where players often float around defensively during the regular season until the final few minutes of each game, before turning it up consistently in the playoffs). Not exactly sure how that is a point of contention.

Sure those things you mention have a to do with winning or losing. But effort is related to those things. Coach Self has talked about it a as of late.

Of course he does, its coach speak. I played competitive sports in HS and college and when we won and lost, it had absolutely nothing to do with effort. I didnt make it past that level because I didnt try hard enough, its because i wasnt skilled or talented enough. Now effort in practice and effort in the offseason is a totally different story.

Effort matters in sports. It mattered in the game today (see the difference in KU's defensive intensity between the 1st and 2nd half and the tangible effect that had). I'm not exactly sure where you've come up with the rather ridiculous idea that it doesn't.
