The national average for a car salesman is 6 months on the job, if that tells you anything.

If you can get past that, it CAN slowly get better... but the way things are right now, if you haven't been at the same store for atleast 5 years you're probably going to struggle.

Being in the same spot that long is the only way to succeed, you have to grow your list of previous buyers who like you and come back to you on a repeat basis and atleast give you a shot at their business... relying on "fresh ups" ie; new customers, is fraught with peril.

The worst part? the Chinese arithmetic of dealerships, you will NEVER really know if your commission is a fair one due to all of the hidden money they build into their stock... you pretty much have to take their word that you're getting a fair shake, atleast with used cars. New cars are cut and dried lowball takes... the 17k entry level vehicle and the 60k truck will both pay you 2-300.

I almost wonder if it's a genetic issue. I just always had some voice in the back of my head that said, "It's probably time to dry out from this for a while and hop back on the train when you've recovered." On top of that, most of those substances aren't nearly as much fun if they're a daily deal than if they're a once in a while treat. Booze, on the other hand, is a pretty much daily dose for me, which I sometimes question.
