People, please quit drinking energy drinks and soda. I've been in practice for 21 years. I've actually seen tooth decay skyrocket because of this shit. I've seen two patients this morning that had over 20 very large cavities each. In discussing their dietary habits, both admit to drinking a couple of Monster energy drinks a day. They sip them, for hours.

I'm in the biz of fixing teeth and make a living doing so, but in the big picture, I'm in the biz of making peoples oral health better, and dammit, it's damned near impossible with shit like this on the market. End of rant

I quit Monster earlier this year. I was addicted to it for probably 3 years. Figure it was nearly a $3000 a year habit. The damage to my mouth is unknown because of a simultaneous tobacco habit. Combine all that with genetically poor teeth and I'm like a dentist's dream.

You were drinking nearly 4 of those things a day?

It's probably less but if you're getting them at 2 for $4...which most gas stations have now....that's 1500 Monsters a year.

Honest question, when a dentist asks you something right before you're forced to open your mouth and can't talk, it's rhetorical, right? Or is an answer expected after you're able to close your mouth and speak even though they've moved on to another topic?

What about coffee? Tea? I've given up soda (never drank energy drinks) but have replaced that with coffee and tea, so hopefully that will work?

My dentist told me to not sip on that shit because it's constantly infecting your teeth. Apparently rinsing with some mouth wash during the day can help, or even just water. Just what I was told.

I don't drink THAT much beer. I don't eat red meat but maybe 4 times a year. I try to eat mostly what I grow and put away, but do have to buy fruits and veggies. Not always organic, no.

Soda is the devil. When I was diagnosed with diabetes the first thing I did was change what I drank. No soda, fruit juices energy drinks and liquor which wasn't easy. I wasn't an alcoholic but I liked drinking. But after changing to basically zero calorie drinks(ice tea, coffee, water) I lost a lot of weight and didn't really have to change much as far as food was concerned and brought my sugar down.
I could drink way more calories in the form of soda or fruit juice or liquor than I could eat in food.

I read some cool trivia about elephants the other day.

You know how people have baby teeth and permanent teeth? Well, elephants have six phases of teeth instead of just two.

And here's where it gets even cooler. The new teeth will come in as molars, and they push forward. All of the teeth move forward and the front teeth fall out. Then the process begins again. So elephants only lose their front teeth, but those teeth used to be their back teeth.

It is a strange and wonderful place, this world of ours.

Researches say if you drink diet sodas it has the same result on your teeth as meth over the years. Google that shit.

The case study looked at the damage in three people's mouths. One subject was a 29-year-old admitted meth user, and the other person was a 51-year-old who abused cocaine for 18 years. The third patient drank an excessive amount of diet soda, about two liters a day for three to five years. All three had poor oral hygiene and did not visit the dentist on a regular basis.

Wow - compelling.

Perhaps due to high sugar/starch/grain diets?...

The article said that an elephant eats 300 to 600 pounds of food per day, so their teeth wear down quickly. It said that most elephants who survive to an old age end up starving to death because they run out of teeth. It makes me wonder if evolution will eventually give them a seventh set.

Yeah, bad judgement on my part. I'll just say, one works at a large discount retailer that sucks, and the other is a janitor at a juvenile detention center. Both would need close to $7K to get their mouth to a healthy condition. Many of the cavities will require root canals and crowns.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone break a tooth on ice. It's probably not good to chew ice, because it would produce microfractures in teeth, but that's simply anecdotal on my part.

It's more than that with me I think. I don't like dark beer(that most people wouldn't consider dark) because its' too bitter, 'robust flavor" sauces from restaurants, and the more expensive wine is, it seems the less I like it.

If something is even a little bitter to other people, I won't find it edible. About the same sensitivity to spice or "heat" too.

Try some Ethiopan coffee (make sure the roast is light). Pretty light and has citrus notes. It's the only thing that I go to Central Market for (that and some other good coffee beans).

End of rant

I already learned the hard way. I admit to still enjoying the occasional root-beer but other than that I can't afford to fix my teeth again. Not many sweets at all anymore.

Plus, when your first dentist is really bad at his job, that also makes future repairs more expensive.

those are shit dentists if they act that way. Unless you've worked on someone, you have no idea what kind of work you can accomplish on someone. I have patients that can't lean back, salivate like a freakin fountain, and can't open more than half an inch. Trying to do the ideal crown on a back tooth is difficult at best and often times impossible. I'm not critical of other dentists work for that reason.

I drink water, tea, milk , and beer. If I drink enough beer to eff up my liver someday, I won't bitch about the cost of health care, I'll bitch about how much of a dumbass I was. Although I drink beer all day long ,even at work. I don't eat red meat but maybe 4 times a year. I try to eat mostly what I grow and put away, but do have to buy fruits and veggies. Not always organic, no.

If you are trying to compare energy drinks to non organically grown food as far as a health concern, you are way off.
