NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the Panthers are attempting to trade the loquacious wide receiver, according to a source informed of the team's plans.

At 34 years old and given his $7 million cap number, the chances of a trade happening are one percentage point from zilch.

When trade winds come up on the verge of free agency, it generally means a team is making a last-ditch effort to get some compensation before cutting a player. Such trades rarely happen.

Smith's contract has $9 million in dead money if he's cut this season (or spread over two years if he is cut with a June 1 designation).

Smith has played in Carolina for 13 seasons and has 836 career catches for 12,197 receiving yards with 67 touchdowns. His 2013 performance fell off dramatically.

The veteran hasn't sounded thrilled with the prospect of playing for a different franchise since hearing of the Panthers' wavering attitude toward him.

The Panthers are woefully thin at wide receiver, even with Smith. If they cut Smith, they will have zero receivers on the roster with a catch in 2013.

Gettleman will have to look to add bodies -- and major talent -- in free agency and the draft (which is deep at the receiver position).

Wait for them to release him. No team is going to give up a pick for him unless it's a 7th or something.

Steve Smith gonna get released.

The Panthers are dumb as hell. He doesn't save them that much cap space and now they have no WR.

WHAT THE FUCK?

Christ. After all the fucktardery that has went on here over the last 30 years, I don't think it has been that bad.

If this guy has the crazy work ethic they say he does, and you're going to go WR in the 1st, picking him up makes some sense. Sort of like signing old ass Ray Lewis would have.

Every year people say Steve Smith is too old, and every year he is damn solid.

no shit.

Note - I can't believe Smith is that close to 1k catches. I've always known he was a stud, but I guess time flies and I didn't realize it.

dude was a beast. 13 seasons all with one team in beast mode.

What about Miles Austin? I know he's been injury ridden but a healthy Austin could be pretty nice and he would come dirt cheap.

Give him an "I Just Wanna Play Football" play deal for two years, a reasonably obtainable loaded like a bastich deal that says gimme an improvement over the current 2-3 competitors and you're in.

He's a scrapper, the kinda guy this team has badly been missed... play angry, call everyone else to account... I like it.

that not a bad idea actually. I said they should have traded him during the "Jake" era when they could have really loaded up on picks. Instead, they got maybe one really useful season out of him with Cam. He would be an asset in KC if for no other reason than to kick Bowes lazy ass, but the dude can still play in spots.
