As a spinoff from the Culver's thread, here's a poll about fast food burger joints. I'm putting up the normal poll for all you lazy asses out there, but it really makes more sense to rate them all individually rather than just picking your favorite (since favorites will largely depend on what places you've actually tried). Because of that, here's a slightly more in-depth poll that I'll report on the results of in a few days.

Steak 'n Shake for me. I've only eaten at 7 of the places listed and 3 of those I haven't eaten at for years.

I've eaten at DQ on occasion, but never for their burgers. Their Iron Grilled sandwiches are really good. They're kind of like a panini.

Five Guys is probably my favorite among that list. In-and-out is good too, but over rated IMO. Five Guys is a slightly better version of them. One of my favorite places when I lived in Los Angeles was Fat Burger. I'd get their "king burger" with and over easy egg. SOOOO good.

burger king is fuckin disgusting. not big on mcdonalds but don't mind the dollar menu items from time to time. wendys is trash, used to be good but it sort of fell off.

Smashburger burgers are great, maybe the best, but their fries suck (or rather, at least they suck at both of the locations near where I live), and for me fries are a big part of the whole burger experience.

I think Wendy's is better than it was, actually. I don't think it's very good, still, but I think it's better than it was.

A lot of these fast food places now are pretty expensive it seems to me. If you get the combo with fries and drink you start to get up near $9 or $10. For a drive thru meal it seems like quite a bit.

I had to go Maid Rite.
Mostly because it is our small town hang out. I started eating there as a small child. My Dad owned a Gas Station up the street, and we ate there all the time.
They would let me have a tab. I would invite all my friends to go to the Maid Rite and we would order up, then my Dad would get the bill. Man he would be pissed.
The place hasn't changed in 50 years. Dirty as hell, but man good food.

You might be right.

I think it has a lot to do with my perception of Five Guys. I look at it as more of a lunch type place. Quick and casual then be off on your way as opposed to a dinner spot.

So basically I end up comparing it to places like Chipotle and Panda Express. $7 for a burrito or a Chinese meal against $10 for a burger and some fries usually means I don't eat there often..

Yeah I thought the same. When I moved to Dallas a few years ago there was on near me but figured it was not uncommon for one of the Colorado or California chains to expand to Texas. For example Wahoo's and Spicy Pickle have locations in Texas.

Same here. At this point though, it's been hyped up too much. I'm bound to be disappointed. It's all you hear west coast people talk about.

I live in Louisiana, not far from the Texas border. Dallas opened up an In-n-Out a couple of years ago, and apparently the drive thru line was over a mile long for the first month or two. Since then, they've opened a bunch more in the area. I still haven't made the six hour drive over there to try one though.

My wife is from Cali. I've been home with her twice now, but we never went to In-n-Out either time. They swear they'll take me next time.

Only time I have tried it in LA was after having my second drunk burger of the day with the first being among the best I have had (Father's Office) so I had a bad frame of reference. I have tried one of the Dallas locations and thought they were pretty good but nothing amazing.

The hype died down quite a lot since they first turned up in Dallas and there are a fair amount of locations here now. It's good enough but there are augments of whether Whataburger is better which would mean you probably shouldn't be driving 6 hours for one.

Well, I've made my thoughts on Whataburger very clear. Sounds like they're both overrated.

In N Out is really good but it's not good enough for the way West Coasters act like it just blows any other burger away.

It blows away all of those shitty national chain fast food burgers. McD's, Wendy's, Burger King, Jack in the Box. I've had better burgers than In-N-Out but those places hardly qualify as "fast food" at all.

Then there are the places that pretend to be Mom-and-Pop joints. Those can be great. There is one I have been to in Chico, California that is incredible. I'd say it just barely qualifies as fast food and the food is ridiculously good. Big Al's:

Culvers or Back Yard Burger are about as fast as In N Out and I would say they're comparable quality.

As promised, here are the results of the more detailed question. Only 21 people responded to the in-depth question, so survey statisticians wouldn't think much of this analysis, but it's still interesting to see how that compares to the list at the top.

So basically, you can't go wrong with In-N-Out Burger, Five Guys, or Smashburger. Go forth and eat meat, men.

By the way, this thread was actually a bit of an experiment to see how many people would actually click through the link to take the longer poll. I always wish we could do more complex poll questions on vBulletin, but alas, all you can do is host it externally. It worked to some extent for a pretty popular poll like this one, but 11% responding to the in-depth question won't give us much to play with in most cases. Oh well, it was fun for this one.

I haven't had Five Guys in a couple years, but last time I went it ended up being around $12 for the burger, fries and drink.

That is pretty expensive in my book.

Just came back from Five Guys :D

I used to absolutely love Steak n Shake when I was in high school. Ate there every chance I got. Moved to Louisiana and didn't see one for about ten years. Saw one on the way home from Chiefs training camp this past season and decided to stop in and have some. Everything tasted exactly the same, but I didn't care for it. I guess my tastes have changed since high school.

Damn, see?

I mean, after that meal you're full as fuck and it tastes amazing.. But $12 for a meal with no drink is a bit pricey.

It's worth it, but only as a special treat. If it were around $8 I'd hit it up a lot more frequently.

Sure but that's the fault with this thread. It should really only be limited to national food chains as restaurants like that and some others don't really compare on the same level.

Fast Food (counter service) and Fast-Casual (sit down, wait staff takes your order) ought to be separate categories too. Different price ranges, and very different types of burgers.

I did (yes, Simply Red, I did!) vote for Culver's because that's my favorite fast-food burger. It scores the highest on the flavor/texture-to-price ratio. I have soft spot for the diner-style burger too. How can a Kansas Citian not when Winstead's is around? (For me more specifically, it was Ray's Diner in Excelsior Springs, MO).

As far as fast-casual goes, my favorite burger in that sphere is from Jim n Nick's, a 30ish location southern food chain (that sources local ingredients, amazingly). Their burgers have a great blend and getting them cooked medium-rare is not a problem.

Pertinent to this thread are a series of articles that the magazine Hobart put out last year titled "An Assessment of Fast Food Hamburgers in the Southeastern United States." These had me painfully cramping up with laughter. For example:
It wasn’t meant to be this way. Subway was supposed to be a healthy intermission from beef, a day of renewal. Then I saw a poster for a sandwich called the “Classic Angus Melt” and I knew it was no melt. It was a 6-inch long hamburger, a Longburger, and I was morally obligated to catalog it with the rest of its kind.

The first bite was terrible. It tasted like rubber, flesh and chemicals. I started to worry whether it had been prepared correctly. It had a fluffy texture that was totally unlike meat. I tried to focus on the flavors of the vegetables but the chemical fluff taste hung in the periphery, always present, tainting everything, waxing and waning unpredictably in every bite. The six inches became a curse; the Longburger was not only twice the length of a normal hamburger but twice as foul.

The Longburger was the only hamburger that caused me to feel concern for my personal wellbeing. That chemical taste told my body: “Do not eat this. This is poison.” I had to exercise my will and manually consume it. On the upside, when I had finished it, after looking back over my life, I felt as if I was getting a second chance. I went outside and called my mother and asked her about her day.

Completely unrelated to fast food burgers, but I tried a place near downtown KC called Westside Local (absolute antithesis to fast food) today for lunch and had their burger. The longer the day goes the more it dawns on me that it was very good. Ground ribeye patty and a subtle combination of sweet and tangy between the toppings. But the bun really did it - light and soft like a cloud. Although it did cost $12, so it better be good.

I found myself near a Freddy's on a lunch errand today, so I gave it a try. I got the double bacon burger combo.

To me, it wasn't much different than Steak and Shake. They had the same damn skinny fries too. I really don't care for those.

Double Western Bacon cheeseburger from Carls Jr and im out! I dont hardly ever ever eat that shit because its so bad for you, but a 2-3 times a year now. ill get one.

That was my first thought also. Love those and was so happy when they built a Carl's Jr. in the next town a couple years ago.

I had to vote for Red Robin though. My favorite of all burgers is the Royal Robin with the egg on top! I don't know why but I love an egg on my burger.

That's actually a really good review. The burger is advertised as Island Fire. You would assume it's going to have some heat to it. I knew it would be sweet as well, but there is literally no heat and tons of sweet.

I've noticed that as a trend with fast food places. Most of their sauces are just an excuse to put sugar on the sandwich.

Finally got a chance to try the Red Robin Burger Works here in Denver (I don't think they've expanded beyond that yet). It's a worthy competitor to the other fast casual places. Tasty burger, good prices, and got it out in about 1/4th the time it usually takes for Smashburger. I'd recommend it if they start showing up elsewhere.

Fuddruckers is the best I've had.

I will never understand the love and hype for In 'n Out. It is a fresh tasty burger at its MacDonalds price point, but at money no object, it pales to even Hardees/Carls Jr. And Wendees. Red Robin actually below In 'n Out. Give me a break.

I know Steak 'n Shake is better. I know Whattagurger is better. I havent had half the burgers on this list, so Maybe I am missing out on something better than Fuddruckers. Poll makes me wonder how many people have even tried it.

I have never had Five Guys but I am guessing it is roughly just another In 'n Out. Great at price point, but if you could have any hamburger on this list for free? Pffffftttttt!

These polls always push low cost burgers to the top because that is all many people have tried besides ?macDonalds.

You go to Seattle and ask for the best burger and half the people will tell you "Dicks". Not Red Mill or Hamburger Harry's or Pattys Egg Nest or Rain City. Freaking Dicks. :banghead:

If you've never had it you owe it to yourself to stop in at least once.

I find that it is worth the money but it's not a place I'd stop by several times per week due to how much it costs. If it were $8, $9 or even $10 for the burger, fries and drink I feel I'd stop by a lot more frequently than the once every couple months or so that I do now.

I haven't been to Canada in a while, but I'm always reminded how bad typical US food is when I eat Canadian food. The bread is better. The fruit and vegetables are much fresher. I have no clue what they do to their hogs, but even the bacon is better.

USA is all about factory done food for efficiency and low cost and ready availability. Europeans would rebel if they had to eat our food every day. But we are raised on it, so we don't really know better and are used to it.

On the flip side, we can get any fruit or vegetable any time of the year out of season. Well at least here in California. I assume that is true of the rest of the US but I don't know first hand.

I had a Five Guys burger once. It should've included a hand job from a solid 7 to compensate for the price.

The best burgers I've ever had have been off my grill or at local greasy spoon.
