Pass Block
33/50

Jeff Linkenbach (6’6”, 325 lbs, four seasons) played guard and tackle for the Colts in 2013. As a guard, Linkenbach proved to be agile and aware with good hand usage. He isn’t exceptionally quick moving laterally, but his biggest concern was dealing with bull-rushers. Unless Linkenbach won the leverage battle early in the play, he wasn’t able to withstand the bull rush from a good defensive tackle.
Run Block
25/50

Linkenbach was at his best when he could initially be part of a double-team before leaking onto the second level. Even then he wasn’t overly impressive. Linkenbach doesn’t have an effective initial punch and can’t sustain blocks at any area of the field. His agility is valuable, but it is diminished by his lack of overall strength.
Overall
58/100

Linkenbach is one of those players who is trapped between being "not good enough" at tackle and "not the right fit" at guard.

If their version of "competition" for Watkins or Johnson is Jeff Linkenbach then their starting RG spot is gifted to them.

Did I miss the report that stated he was signed as starting G at $5m per year? WTF cares if they sign a backup lineman?

mcaj22
03-12-2014, 03:14 PM
because usually, when you sign a "backup" lineman there is a solidified starter in front of him. (see last year Geoff Schwartz --> Jon Asamoah)

in this case, there isn't. there is a massive gaping void on the offensive line with nobody with any experience to fill it. This is where Jeff Linkenbach comes in, he has more NFL experience than anyone else at the position currently. Now whether he wins the starting job remains to be seen. But this pretty much says we will have some slapdick playing RG for us this season that gets absolutely owned.

Dorsey hinted at moves like this prior to the start of free agency, saying they've identified some players who have certain "skills" that fit the "system" we run that they've identified (translation: cheap signings).

Which means either Mays and Linkenbach do things that fit our system well and they will be nice complimentary signings, or that the front office is trying to get too cute and signing guys who are destined to continue to suck...

So when Schwartz signed here you thought he was good?

Was it because he had started 26 games in 6 years? Is it because prior to last year he only had ONE season with more than 3 starts?

Here's Schwartz seasons before he signed with us:

2008: Cut after training camp
2009: Only 3 starts at right tackle
2010: 16 starts at guard or RT. Allowed 6 sacks. Sucked.
2011: 0 starts
2012: 0 starts

It's not about Schwartz all by his fucking self.

It's about continuity, consistency, and at least LOOKING like they have a fucking plan.

Some of you guys would suck their shit through a straw if they'd let you...

This has nothing to do with what I posted about. I posted about strictly just Schwartz. Not the line as a whole. And as far as continuity is concerned, losing a career backup guard who started 7 games shouldn't hurt us unless this is the weakest team in NFL history.

You keep bringing up the rudderless ship you think the Chiefs are. That you see no plan. What is the plan that you want to see? More weapons for Smith? Or what?

Were you expecting them to dive into FA head first? All we've heard is they were not going that route this year.Frankly they couldn't. FA to find depth, draft to find the future starters. That's what GB does, that's what I expect from Dorsey. Tell me how they've veered from that so far?

So when Schwartz signed here you thought he was good?

Was it because he had started 26 games in 6 years? Is it because prior to last year he only had ONE season with more than 3 starts?

Here's Schwartz seasons before he signed with us:

2008: Cut after training camp
2009: Only 3 starts at right tackle
2010: 16 starts at guard or RT. Allowed 6 sacks. Sucked.
2011: 0 starts
2012: 0 starts

Tell me again how he's better than this guy.

Because as we all know....the more starts you have....the better you are.

So you think it's coincidental that he's been a backup his whole career? If he was truly good, why did he never crack a starting lineup without injury having caused it?

# of starts mean something. You can't dismiss it. If a guy only starts 26 games in a 6 year career, he's not good. If he goes 2 years without starting a game, he's likely not good.

Make sure to leave out the part where this isn't 2013 and we actually got to see Schwartz play...

Pretty funny seeing the cast of characters that thought it was a great signing - "he'll start here" - are the same ones that think it's a great move to let him go.

Let's just put it out on the table and get it over with:

There are people here that won't disagree with a SINGLE move the Chiefs make.

I didn't like the Smith deal because I wanted them to be true to their word and build through the draft.

When they traded for Smith and signed a whole bunch of guys last offseason, it looked like they were ready to compete.

The glaring problem is actually depth. Have to hope that Dorsey picks up the pieces from pre-season and we have an excellent draft, otherwise its going to be a long year. If the Chiefs grab Xavier Su'a-Filo or Joel Bitonio in the draft, I would argue that they have improved at the position. Or they could trade down and get OL in the 2nd.

This is a deep draft, especially for corners and WRs. There's also some real quality pass rushers that could be there for us. It would be a real shame to have to use a 1 or 3 on a lineman because they sat on their hands in free agency.

I highly doubt this is the guy Mitch was talking about, so we can still hope that this guy is the backup and they just got his deal done first.

Anthony Collins is my guess. Then shift Stephenson to guard.

Would be a move that I could get behind.

I guess I like Mays - How do you feel about Mays, Park'r?

Mays sucks. I saw him play nearly every game last year with the Texans. Dude can't shed blocks to save his life and has very limited range. He ALWAYS got caught up in the "mush." There's a reason why the Texans didn't want him any longer and he wasn't at all expensive for them to keep. Dude also plays dirty. He BLOWS.

I thought about Collins last night. He's a decent tackle from what I can remember. I just didn't think we'd have room for him. I don't see Stephenson making a move inside.

Stephenson was seeing a lot of time at guard in OTAs last season. It could happen.

He's solid. Arguably the next best tackle FA after BA. Less prone to injury.

They'd give Fisher a chance to start at LT before playing Collins there. They would probably make all 3 compete for the starting LT role and hope that Fisher wins it outright as he enters his 2nd year in the league.

That's a big hope.

Would be a real kick in the nuts if Fisher started year 2 at #2 on the depth chart.

Scott Pioli never had a starter as bad as Joe Mays or Jeff Linkenbach.

I hate these signings too but that's simply not true.

Mike Goff was as bad. Corey Mays was worse than Joe Mays. O'Callaghan was awful too.

Well, given the fact that Collins is a proven and good vet starter and Stephenson played well, I wouldn't be entirely surprised. However, if Fisher is able to add enough weight and power to withstand bull rushes next season and not get knicked up so easily, he should win the LT position easily. If it's even across the board, they're going to start Fisher.

While I'm sure all of this won't hurt season ticket sales this year, one has to wonder what it'll do for the year after.

And, because I always see the good in things (the proverbial silver lining (!!!!)), this may put us in the running for the #1 pick in the 2015 draft. Hopefully we don't go with a RT (again) if that happens.

by no means am I saying this is a good signing, it isn't, but so many of you guys act like you didn't see this coming. One free agent of ours got more money than we have in total cap space. I applaud our front office for not overpaying any of our old guys (because each and every one was overpayed). Denver signs a CB with a negative PFF grade for 57 million and that's so great? I would be scared for their future if I was a fan there. Not for us, however

When you figure out how the cap really works, you'll understand the Chiefs could have and should do more in free agency. Id trade places with Denver in a second. Why? Because they TRY EVERY YEAR. The Chiefs take two steps backwards after having a successful season. If you want to worry about something, worry about that disturbing fact and ask yourself why...
