He's been an above average safety, but nothing resembling the type of impact player you should get at 5th overall.

The past 25 top 5 picks, Pro bowlers in bold:

ERIC FISHER
LUKE JOECKEL
DION JORDAN
LANE JOHNSON
ZIGGY ANSAH

ANDREW LUCK
RG3
TRENT RICHARDSON
MATT KALIL
JUSTIN BLACKMON

CAM NEWTON
VON MILLER
MARCELL DAREUS
AJ GREEN
PATRICK PETERSON

SAM BRADFORD
NDAMUKONG SUH
GERALD MCCOY
TRENT WILIAMS
ERIC BERRY

MATTHEW STAFFORD
JASON SMITH
TYSON JACKSON
AARON CURRY
MARK SANCHEZ

Berry has absolutely played like a top five pick. In fact, the law of averages says being a top five pick doesn't guarantee being a probowler, so he's above average, even for a top five pick. Based on this one single criteria, which is bullshit, but no more bullshit than your argument.

Let's add five more, just to be fair, so 2013 don't count against the probowl number:

JAKE LONG
CHRIS LONG
MATT RYAN
DARREN MCFADDEN
GLENN DORSEY

He's an all-pro - not a probowler, an all-pro.

Nobody, not even Eric Berry, can cover some of these TEs one on one. It's not his fault they want to stuff him in the box and use him like a linebacker.

Let's extend that to the sixth pick taken, just in case KC's shitty drafting was keeping another probowler from adding to the pot.

Seriously, when you use the Pro Bowl as a level of competence, you're showing your own ignorance.

The PB is a popularity contest, nothing more.

Has EB been an impact player in the mold of Earl Thomas, Ed Reed, Polamalu, Atwater, etc?

He's been good, but not Top 5 good, IMO. Though I will say, if he plays more like he played last year, he'll start to be worth the pick.

Neither Earl Thomas nor Ed Reed were consistently asked to do what Eric Berry does day in and day out. There's a reason guys like Jimmy Graham and Gronk are all the rage, NOBODY can cover them 1-on-1. Yet our stupid DC continues to put Berry in the box, 1-on-1, and expecting it to work.

And about the Pro Bowl, read my previous post.

Which is why he's not worth the pick, IMO.

It's not about his talent - it's about using a Top 5 pick as a glorified LB.

He's not an impact player playing in the box. He absolutely would be - again, IMO - if he was playing centerfield where he belongs.

There is some truth to this.

But Berry did pretty well in exactly that role. He pretty much locked down every TE we played all year. If I remember correctly, the only TE that scored a TD against us was Julius Thomas @Denver.

Jason Witten, Jordan Cameron, Julius Thomas x2, Antonio Gates x2, Coby Fleener.. Those guys are pretty good.

Berry is an above average starter in the league. We got an above average player who will end up being a 6-7-8+ year starter for us. It doesn't matter where you pick in the first round, that's fine for value. Not exceptional, but fine.
