This should be a pretty good game for us. We can knock Odorizzi around. Moose hits the team's first HR in his first plate appearance.

Royals - 6
Rays - 3

I haven't watched Moustakas this year, but I took a late round flyer on him in FBB after his spring. What is his deal? How could someone with such great minor league #s be such a terrible major league hitter?

Have you all noticed anything in his swing or approach?

You think Guthrie is going to limit them to 3 runs?

He gave up 5 runs in 12 innings vs them last season. So three runs in 6 or 7 innings is about right. Also, the Rays just don't play us very well.

Loopy swing, no plate discipline, can't hit lefties, can't hit a curveball. No opposing team should ever throw him a fastball.

its early, but its beginning to look like he might be a head case. We do know that he becomes visibly frustrated easily. Thats one of those things that you can't really scout.

Not really, no. He's got all the tools but you don't face tough enough competition in high school to see if someone has MLB-level pitch recognition.

As for why pick him #1, high school hitters have a very high ceiling, if you want one you have to take a risk.

The MLB draft is even more of a crapshoot than the NFL one.

There are guys who become stars that were drafted in way low rounds. Mike Piazza comes to mind.

Under Dayton Moore? Yes, many teams have missed on more No. 1 picks than the Royals. It's a very inexact science based off of small bodies of work. Sometimes you draft a physical specimen from a non-baseball-hotbed, and the guy turns into a superstar by age 20. Sometimes, you draft that guy, and he takes forever to pan out, if at all.

The scouts say he has a serious problem with pitch recognition. If he doesn't fix that, he'll never make it out of AA.

He did hit a 3-run home run last night but otherwise has had a slow start to the season with the bat.

Scouting Report remains... great power... great speed (defense and baserunning)... excellent CF defense ... great throwing arm... questions on hit tool.

This is a key year for Starling. Hit tool must make some progress for him. A lot is made of how "old" he is, but he is really just average age for his level.

If he can get to a point where he can hit a credible .240-.250 at the MLB level while maintaining good walk rates, he will be a valuable MLB player.

Nothing none of us dont already know, but figure id post it anyways....

The five biggest problems with the Royals offense

5. Alex Gordon. He had an underwhelming (for him) season in 2013, and is starting slow again — .231/.276/.308. Some of this is bad luck (he’s about 50 points below league average on balls in play) but he’s not driving the ball like he’s capable. He’s in good company there.

4. Double plays. Just by themselves, Eric Hosmer and Billy Butler have hit into more double plays than more than half the American League. Add in their teammates, and only the Red Sox have hit into more. There is never a good time to hit into a double play, but the Royals’ have come at especially bad moments, like Hosmer’s last night in the third inning with the bases loaded.

3. Billy Butler. Just like Gordon, Butler’s 2013 was below the standard he’s set for himself, and just like Gordon, his 2014 has been slow. Butler did have the Royals’ only hit with runners in scoring position last night, but the rules are different when you’re the $8 million DH. Most concerning is that he doesn’t have an extra-base hit. Butler is only two seasons removed from slugging .510 with 29 home runs. They can’t have a relapse into Ichi-Billy. I touched on this during spring training, but an interesting subplot here is that if Butler doesn’t have a big year the Royals probably aren’t picking up his option for 2015.

2. Mike Moustakas. Like Rex Hudler said last night on the broadcast, Moose finally has a batting average after getting his first hit of the season. That batting average is .045. I keep hearing people inside the Royals say they’re not concerned, that Moose will hit like Moose, but the fact is that Moose is a .241/.294/.379 guy in 1,518 career plate appearances. They need Moose to be better than Moose, and at 25 and in his fourth big league season, it’s past time.

1. No power. One hundred and thirty six players have hit home runs this year, including Dee Gordon and Scott Van Slyke and Ryan Hanigan. None of them play for the Royals. It’s not just home runs, either. Only the A’s and Tigers have fewer doubles. Add it together, and the Royals have seven fewer extra-base hits than any team in the American League. It shouldn’t be this way. The Royals don’t have a slugger, not a real one, but between Butler, Gordon, Hosmer, and Perez, they do have enough guys who can drive gaps that they shouldn’t be in this position.

well, it also helps when you decide to stop fighting over 140 years of baseball tradition.

Maybe a real 2B doesn't make that play in the 9th so maybe having a backup middle infielder would not make a difference, but everyone was (probably correctly) laser-focused on the decision to go with Valencia at 2B, and he couldn't knock down the game-winner.

Both moves that make sense, mostly.

I think Coleman helps the pen quite a bit. That's another reliable arm out there and lessens the load on Davis and Crow, considerably.

Gio is tearing the cover off the ball in Omaha, so I'm sure he'll do what he has typically done in KC... not hit.

But he IS another legitimate infielder, at least, even if he is average at best at 2B (which is still better than Valencia).

PS - No lefties on MLB roster now, with Joseph demoted to make room for Coleman.

Do you not understand the rules? His hand was on the bag before the tag. That there is what they call "safe", in baseball lingo.

Show me the frame where Gordon's hand is on the base before he gets tagged.

Giovatella is a ML player, says Hud. I agree, he is a backup but I agree and he should stay up this time. 2 infield backups, 2 OF backups, 2 catchers. Ned needs to learn to manage 11 pitchers. 12 is just too confusing for him and bad for the team.
