The apricot BMW just turned over 97,000 miles this weekend, which isn't bad for a 14 year-old car. It still looks pristine other than a couple of door dings and a mysterious dimple on top of the trunk.

What's your vehicle got, and how many miles can a vehicle have before you start thinking about selling it?

Our 2006 CR-V just turned up 77,000 miles. My 2009 Forester has 43,000 miles.

As for getting rid of them, it will depend more on if we are having serious problems than actual miles. We should be able to easily go 150K miles, if not more.

I get a little nervous having only one car that's 14 years old, but geez, my car is well built. It never has problems. My dad (a used-car dealer) told me that a BMW is probably reliable up to 250,000 miles. At our current rate of usage, that means we'll have this car until the year 2046.

My 99 Mazda Protege has 240,000 and running great. I dropped a pull-a-part junk yard engine into it at 210,000. I had to pull the engine myself and they charged me $180. The didn't even charge me for the alternator, power steering pump, air conditioning condenser, cruise control, starter, every fuse, relay and a bucket of every kind of bolt, nut, screw and plastic connector. I have enough parts to keep the car running another 200,000.

The car cost me $400 at 180,000 miles. Interior is still perfect, body is good and I drive it every day. When I changed the engine I knocked all the internals out of the catalytic converter and my gas mileage went from 26mpg to 30mpg, while still passing emissions every year. It isn't fast, but it goes and goes.

Just past the 250,001 mark a month or so ago. I'm shopping for cars, knowing soon I will need one. As of now it keeps on truckin' and when it got checked up the mechanic found a few problems with it but nothing too major. Got some of it fixed but trying to see what I can/should do to it without spending too much. Don't want to spend alot of money, have the car blow up and then not have that money for a new car. Kind of in car purgatory right now.

Didn't know how to answer this one. The 03 Cavalier died in Dec with 260,000 miles. The 95 Dakota has 307,000 and is still the go to when 4x4 is needed. The replacement for the Cavalier, is a 2005 Malibu body with a 2003 engine and trans that has 70,000 on it. So the Malibu's odometer says 190,000 but has 80,000 actual.

What's wrong with the 3.7 V6? I haven't had any issues with the engine.

When engine questions come up I will give you my canned answer to that. You will find that every vehicle/brand/motor, what have you, that have people who have had 0 problems, and those who swear they are big piles of junk.

But, that is all anecdotal. Now, anecdotal evidence is not always wrong. However, it provides no ground to stand on when trying to say yes or no is this a good vehicle. There is enough data out there to support which vehicles are good or bad by looking at vehicle lines, or in this case motors, as a whole.

The 3.7, 4.7, and even the 5.7 Chrysler motors have had lots of issues, not only is the design bad, but because of the design, they are prone to failure. The rule of thumb with Chryslers is that if it ends in a 7, stay away.

Firstly are the valve seats. In the manufacturer's original design, the engine's valve seats, which are pressed into the cylinder heads, are dropping and leading to catastrophic failures. Dodge's valve seats are made of a powdered metal, and as the metal expands, the valve seats drop which leads to contact with the valve & pistons. When this occurs the seat breaks into many pieces leading to piston, cylinder wall, valve and cylinder head failure. This metal has also been known to fly back into the intake manifold, and if not cleaned out properly, can lead to a failure in both new (and replacement) engines.

Two; these engines invariably run at a higher than normal combustion-chamber temperature because of an engineering flaw in the piston ring landings. This, in conjunction with smaller than feasible drain back holes in the heads and block, create a "frying pan" effect by breaking down new oil faster and leaving sludge in the engine, which ultimately gets blocked. This leads to oil-starvation and absolute failure of the engine.

Unwilling to junk their car and simply walk away from an otherwise perfectly good vehicle, owners are discovering a more cost-effective way for replacing the broken drivetrain with rebuilt and upgraded replacements, effectively salvaging their initial investment and keeping it on the road for many more years (and miles).

Sympathetic with frustrated Dodge/Chrysler owners, Eddie Symonds, the CEO of the Maryland based company, Powertrain Products, says, "Engine problems are showing up in Dodge/Chrysler cars at about the 75,000 mile reading. Let's face it, everybody expects the engine to run smoothly for at least 200,000 miles, which it doesn't. We consider this as a very early failure

Chrysler screwed up when they stopped producing the 4.0. Ask Wrangler guys~

As for my top 3 motors, that is all anecdotal and not based on any stat line, I just know from many years in this business what motors consumers desperately want, and what they want to stay away from. There are lots of good motors out there. There are even more bad ones.

7.3?

Will still bring a premium with the wheels off just for having the 7.3 in it. If I get one in at the dealership, no matter the miles or condition, its as good as gone as soon as it hits the lot.

When that happens, we can get you into a nice new or pre-owned 6.7~

Chrysler screwed up when they stopped producing the 4.0. Ask Wrangler guys~

As for my top 3 motors, that is all anecdotal and not based on any stat line, I just know from many years in this business what motors consumers desperately want, and what they want to stay away from. There are lots of good motors out there. There are even more bad ones.

Great, so I've got that to look forward to....

The 4.0L wasn't even a Chrysler engine. They inherited it from AMC. Chrysler did upgrade the electronics and ignition, though.

As for why it went away, I found this quote:

The reasons the 4.0L went away was due mainly to age of the manufacturing tooling, which was worn out. The long stroke made it harder to clean up the emissions of NOx, and NIH (“Not Invented Here”), in my opinion, also reared its head. To completely retool would have cost as much (almost) as the 3.7L V6 did, and the Dodges were going to use the 3.7 as a base engine. Logically, the engine group did what they were told to satisfy the dealers....“Make a modern engine, and junk the old ones.” This statement is my opinion, based on conversations at the time.

No, it's the 3.7 V6, I think. Not worried about the motor, but the tranny has me concerned. I also just had to replace the shifter bezel for $1,200.00. Electrics are a concern as well.

shifter bezel? 1200 dollars? holy fuck!!! I think you took a good hard one...

And I bet they didn't do any market research ahead of time, either.

That 4.0 is bulletproof, will run forever, one of my top 3 legendary engines (ls1, 7.3l diesel) . 3.7 on the other hand is a POS. There's your difference.

I work on and think the 7.3 is a piece of shit. injector and wiring issues, glow plugs too, head gasket problems, high pressure oil pump issues...

all the diesel engines in a ford suck IMO, if I was to buy a diesel it would be a 12 valve cummins

There's not even a hint of a bell curve in this data. Fascinating. If you divvy it up into 25,000 mile increments (with some estimating on the categories, we have the following responses:

0-25k - 17 responses
25-50k -15
50-75k - 18
75-100k - 18
100-125k - 20
125-150k - 10
150-175k - 23
175-200k - 9
200-225k - 6
225-250k - 6
250-275k - 3
275-300k - 3
300k+ - 4

The numbers tail off past 175k, but it's a long tail. And below that it's almost perfectly evenly distributed.

2007 Camry (bought in May '06) with 64,000 miles. It's only used to drive to work and around town. I fly if I go to distant destinations, not counting the occasional day-trip.

50,000 on my 1995 Lincoln Towncar. Just had my main vehicle totaled in January by a speeding driver with a suspended license. It worked out nice though since this Lincoln is like brand new and drives like a dream.

I went ahead and picked the 200001 to 250000, because the mileage currently is 199780 and I drive just over 100 miles a day to college and back not including the regular ole running I do. I imagine it will have many many more put on it before I get rid of it if I ever do.
