St. Louis Cardinals vs. Kansas City Royals
The Denkinger Line

The Show Me State has mostly thrown in with the Cardinals, who have been as good for the last two decades as the Royals have been bad. The line is well west of the halfway point between the two cities — Columbia, Mo. — and instead runs through Sedalia and Pittsburg. We can only guess what this map would have looked like in 1985, when a missed call by Umpire Don Denkinger helped the Royals win their last World Series, over the Cardinals. Unfortunately, there’s no Facebook map for that: Mark Zuckerberg was not yet 2 years old.

The first thing I noticed was the incredible trade markets the Braves and Rangers have. Talk about population! The Rockies coming into the game hurt our trade market but I'm not sure how many Coloradans really were Royals fans. The other thing was how far St Louis pushes up into Illinois and even east into Indiana. The article addresses it:

Most states with a team have few areas that side with an out-of-state rival. Not so in Illinois, where half the state stands in open revolt. Bloomington, Champaign and Peoria appear to belong to the Cubs, but south of those cities, expect to see a lot of Cardinal red.

In terms of NFL loyalties, it seems that the Chiefs push back the other way across the state:

Astros really losing central/south texas. Not surprising. Thanks, Comcast

It would have been really interesting to see a map like that in the heyday of KMOX when the Cardinals were the western-most team in baseball.

The article surmised that it may be due to the name "Texas" being more appealing to the rest of the state (vs calling themselves the Dallas Rangers) but I don't know that's true. While not totally comparable, the Dallas Cowboys are vastly more popular than the Texans are in football which may toss cold water on that theory.

Missouri natives sure love a good bandwagon. Way too many Chiefs/Cards fans

Astros used to do well from Austin to Corpus, which has always been Cowboys region. TV contracts and performance has seen a shift to the Rangers.

Funny how the Faders aren't nearly as popular in their own backyard as the Niners but still have all those gangbangers down in LA who like them. Why don't they just move back into that market? Funny too how the NFC North is split by state lines.

jesus...no wonder we see the Broncos and Cowboys are on every ****ing week.

There's no population in Wyoming so that mostly leaves only Colorado. They're on all the time because there arne't many West Coast teams to put on the late games, and of course because of the decades success of big stars Elway and Maggot.

They also have 2nd favorite team map:

Looks like the Cards are clearly in 2nd around Kansas City, but that the Royals seem to be liked on the eastern half of the state. Probably because the two teams don't really compete with each other. Or more likely, because of transplants.

Across most of Kansas outside of KC, though, the Cards aren't all that popular. (Oh and shame on NY and New England)

It would be interesting to see what happens with Texas since both the Rangers and Astros are in the AL and in the same division. The only other place where that happens is PA where the Phillies and Pirates are both in the NL but not in the same division.
