View Full Version : Life Breastfeeding Mom, Puts Woman Who Asked Her To 'Cover Up' In Her Place

Kinda torn on this one. Yes lady, we understand its your right to feed in public. But please have some consideration for the kids aged 5-13 who were around. Good grief.

It's a tale we've unfortunately heard many, many, many times before: A mom breastfeeding in public is either asked to stop, to leave or to cover up.

This time, when mom Lucy Eades was asked to cover up at a recreation center in Burleson, Texas, her husband caught the exchange on camera. He then uploaded the footage to the family's popular YouTube channel (you can watch it above).

According to local ABC affiliate WFAA, the mom of four was nursing her 16-day-old while her older daughter was in dance class. An employee of the Burleson Recreation Center asked her to cover up, but Eades stood up for her rights and continued to nurse. "It is state law, I can nurse my child with or without a cover," she said.

And, Eades is right: It's legal to breastfeed in public in all 50 states, and Texas is one of 45 states that have laws that specifically allow women to breastfeed in any public or private location.

Eventually, dad spoke up too, and the employee walked away. WFAA reports that Eades was the second mom asked to cover up at the recreation center that day. Later, the City of Burleson released a statement:

The City of Burleson supports breastfeeding and appreciates recognition of National Breastfeeding Week. The city also supports the law, which states, "A mother is entitled to breast-feed her baby in any location in which the mother is authorized to be." Today, two women were breastfeeding in or near a public entrance to the city's recreation center where we were hosting a camp for youth ages 5 - 13 in addition to other recreation center patrons. To be respectful of everyone's rights we asked the women to cover up. There is nothing in the law that prohibits the city from requiring a mother to cover up. We also offered a room in an attempt to be more accommodative. The city did not attempt to prohibit breastfeeding and we fully support the freedom of mothers to breastfeed as long as it doesn't infringe on someone else's freedom.
The Stir's Jeanne Sager sees the issue as black and white. "Either you're family-friendly or you're not, and as long as you're not OK with breastfeeding moms, you're NOT family-friendly," she wrote.

According to KHOU, a nurse-in, a popular form of breastfeeding protest, is planned at the recreation center on Saturday.

The incident happened to fall during National Breastfeeding Month, an annual event that we're celebrating here at HuffPost Parents. We're participating in "I Support You," an initiative to collect photos and messages from mothers to each other that say we might lead different lives but we share wanting the best for our children. That lady was being super polite when asking her to cover up. I dont see what the big deal is with asking her to cover up. I'm also tired of douchebags with cellphones waiting for the oppurtunity to record and fight back against anyone that shows an ounce of authority. From what the husband was saying while filming you could tell thaty had been waiting for an incident like this. "Oh this is gonna be fun." "Yea, it's happening." What an uber douchebag.

I don't see anything wrong with the way she was breast feeding, even in the presence of 5-13 year olds.

I don't think we got a good enough shot of the front to be able to tell anything.

This represents a deeper problem in American society which is it's indifference (and in cases like this, annoyance) at children. We have restaurants in America that are going to "no kids allowed" and others that are giving "good behavior discounts".

Children are a burden to our bohemian lives that derive much more pleasure in constnatly texting.

People who breastfeed in public kind of freaked me out. I don't want to have to explain to my child about the birds and bees too early. I remember my cousin doing that s*** once and it messed me up. Sure you have the right to feed that way and it is natural. however making babies is natural and I don't do that in public.

I'm not sure what more I could see to make me think it was inappropriate. She had a shirt on and a baby latched onto the one exposed breast. It didn't seem gratuitous at all. But we never know what wasn't captured on video so it's possible.

I think it's weird that people would WANT to breastfeed in public without covering up, personally. A lady did it on a bus I was on recently. She was not attractive, and there was a whole lot of nasty belly hanging out in addition to everything else. But whatever I guess.

Yea...I rewatched the video to get a second look. At one point she turned around to the camera...it was quick, but what I saw didn't look terribly bad. Like you said though, she could have adjusted before the video started.

The worst part of the video is the douchebag husband.

I agree its odd. As a husband, I'd be a little annoyed at the thought that random guys might be trying to get a peek at as much as they could see. Theres all sorts of activist groups for it though. So, apparently its a popular cause.

If the lady has no problem with people staring at her doing it without a cover, then more power to her. I think many women cover up because they feel exposed/immodest (whether right or wrong).

The issue I have are the people with like a freaking 3 year old still sucking on the tit in public (and yes, we have those types here in hippie central, Fayetteville). Once again, go for it, but don't be surprised or act indignant whenever people are looking at you askance.

I was over at a friend's house the other day and the neighbor kid's mom just flopped it out right in front of the 6 of us sitting in the living room. It's a little hard to maintain your conversation and act like nothing weird is going on, not to mention watching where your eyes roam.

My oldest son's favorite baby sitter was this attractive European chick from our church who brings her 1 year old with her when she sits.

We finally figured out one reason why he likes her so much when she whipped out her titty and started feeding her son while sitting on the couch watching TV next to my oldest, who kept stealing peeks out of the corner of his eyes.

I kind of think the acceptable arrangement should be that women are welcome to breastfeed however they please, but that others should be welcome to stare at them the entire time. If they're uncomfortable with that, there's probably an easy solution...

That's exactly what I was thinking, men need to do their part and start standing as close as they can and staring at the breast. and maybe even critiquing the breast as they are staring.

I really don't give two shits about a woman breastfeeding in public.

Maybe this woman, and others that would like to breastfeed in public, could use a rag to cover up. Honestly, either society accepting it or the woman covering up would be pretty simple compromises.. This just seems like people being outraged for no apparent reason.

Oh, and that dude was a douche. "I'm gonna hafta ask you ta stahp talkin to muh wyf... Goodbah."

It's not socially acceptable to have certain parts of the body exposed in public.

Personally I find it odd that it's ok to show one of these parts if you're holding a baby, but not OK otherwise.

Or, as an option, the woman can go off to a discreet area and breastfeed where not everybody is going to be passing by. It's not supposed to be a free-for-all out on the streets.

Men are no longer allowed to have responses to anything, and women are no longer required to use common sense. You must have missed the memo. It went out more than a decade ago.

I don't think the woman breastfeeding had any issues with people looking. Her issue was with that woman being weird about it. I find it odd that another woman would be weird about this.

To me, the only awkward thing about breastfeeding is when 5 year old children are still breastfeeding.

The women had a problem with it because its a family environment with a camp going on involving 5-13 year olds. All she was asking for was some consideration.
