I was using TWC and paying for 16 mb/s service but it never had the snap that I thought it should. The Google 5 mb/s service is much more responsive. Maybe downloads are slower but I don't download much so its not worth the extra expense.

I asked them to bury the cable and they did. No charge for that.

In general, cable isn't dedicated bandwidth, whereas fiber-based ethernet services and DSL are.

That's why you'll see switched services marketed as "10 Meg" while cable services are marketed as "up to 10Meg".

You really feel it with the upload. Sign up for an offsite backup service like BackBlaze or PictureLife and you'll see what I mean.

What is your average ping/latency?

DaveNull

depends on the site you're looking for. Around 12ms for google.com and 1.4ms for YouTube. About 24ms for CP.

With cable it's all about the grid immediately around you. Many years ago I was 1st in my neighborhood to have cable and I didn't sleep for 3 days dling stuff. Once everybody got it it's meh. Need to spread a rumor and get all my neighbors to cancel cable so I can have the grid to myself again.

Comcast just increased the speed of their internet in my area dramatically. I was at someone's house down by the Plaza that had Google Fiber, and their WiFi was really slow and would go in and out. I imagine they probably had an old Wireless G router, maybe that was the problem.

Yeah, 1Mbit up is really not enough anymore.

Yeah, that's a LAN issue, not a WAN issue.

If it was G, then yea...that wireless standard is susceptible to alot of inference from cordless phones and microwaves.

And each other. There's only 3 non-overlapping channels in the 2.4Ghz spectrum.

If he was on the Plaza, his WLAN was probably competing with a couple dozen other networks at least.
