So as many of you know, I had my appendix out on Monday night. Before I was told I needed to have my appendix removed, I was diagnosed with strep throat.

I've been taking augmiten twice a day since Wednesday now. The white spots on the back of my throat actually seemed to go away for a while, but now they're back in full force. Only a slightly sore throat, no fever, no other symptoms.

Is this normal? I've had a lot of anxiety due to the surgery. I'm just curious as to whether or not I should finish my antibiotic course before calling the Dr. back?

Hot tea, couple splashes of Jack Daniels and a tablespoon of honey. Best throat medicine.

Ive had my bouts with this shit. Take the full prescription of meds first and foremost, and keep taking them until they are gone, even if your symptoms seem to be gone and you feel great.

If symptoms persist after the meds are gone, then you need to consult the doctor.

First thing he's going to ask you is "Have you taken all of the medication?" when your answer is no, he's going to blow you off until you've completed the prescription.

I also smoked a couple packs this week too. I did a good job quitting, but the stress from all this shit falling on my lap at once really got to me. I'm sure the smoking hasn't helped. :(

You should probably go ahead and finish the antibotics, but they likely aren't doing shit anyway. Docs give out antibiotics like candy, even though they are worthless against a virus, which is generally what causes strep throat.

What?

Strep throat is called "strep" throat because it's generally caused by the Steptococcus Pyogenes bacteria...

I haven't taken them since 2010, when I had my 3rd (and final) sinus surgery.

I was born with a severely deviated septum and had sinus/ear infections at least 6 months out of the year, every year, for the first 30 years of my life.

I knew it was time to bit the bullet and get it all fixed surgically when I had a routine staph infection and took 4 different antibiotics before finding one that actually worked.

Keep taking your antibiotics and call your doctor or urgent care. You don't want to fuck around with strep throat. If not treated properly, it can lead to systemic infections, like septicemia.

Or a brain abscess...

My mother in law had strep throat that was poorly-treated back in the early 90's.

It took her 8 months to learn how to WALK AND TALK AGAIN.

OK, I read the OP a little quickly. It see it says "I was diagnosed with strep throat."

If there was truly a strep throat diagnosis, then, yes antiboitics.

What I had in mind was this--there are many 'sore throat' ailments that people simply call 'strep throat.' It can't be diagnosed by looking at it. They gotta do a blood test or a culture or some such thing. However, doctors often just go ahead and give the antibiotics regardless. Most of these turn out not to be strep in the first place.

The symptoms go away in a few days and people attribute it to the antibiotics--when the thing would have gone away in a few days anyway.
