I think I represented 20% of national demand for the lemon pies back in high school and college. Eventually I figured out that they were unhealthy and stopped eating them, but I wish I had one right now. Just for old times sake, y'know.

Oatmeal pies probably don't get the accolades that they deserve. They went against every snack treat convention, and yet were unfathomably delicious. They are the true rebels of the snack cake world.

Back when I could eat stuff like this, the main thing I liked were these:

To be honest, if I was in the mood for something like that, I tended to just get a chocolate covered donut or a maple bar..

I can't remember Little Debbie making anything that I was excited about. Sure, you wouldn't turn it down, but c'mon--it was no Hostess.

One thing I vaguely remember about Little Debbie was that whatever its Ho-Ho knockoff was, it came wrapped with two together (unlike a real Ho-hos, which were individually wrapped). So, once you opened one, you had to go ahead and have the other one also. Because you didn't want to have it go stale and waste it. Score!

Devil Dogs!

In high school we used to crash my friend's house because he had every video game system. One time we decided to raid his pantry. We discovered 2 unopened boxes of Devil Dogs, which we quickly obliterated.

A couple of hours later the friend found out we ate all of the Devil Dogs. He freaked out and almost cried because "THOSE WERE FOR MY DAD! HE'S GOING TO GO NUTS WHEN HE GETS HOME AND THERE ARE NO DEVIL DOGS! Quick! Oh God! Someone go to the store real fast and buy 2 boxes!"

We did not go to the store and buy 2 boxes.

My friend lived.

The end.

You guys have to try this this 4th of July. Two years ago I hosted a big 4th party made a huge platter with Hostess Cup Cakes, Twinkies, and Ho Ho's (couldn't find the sno balls)...those got devoured minutes after bringing them out...gone...people still bring that up to me from time to time. Huge success and a trip down memory lane for so many.

So I suppose Galas or Fuji.

Neither of which look very good on a cheesecake.

I don't think they sell those around here. I've seen the Honeycrisp (for big $$$$). I'll keep an eye out for the Pink Lady.

As an aside, Red Delicious and Granny Smith used to be really good apples. However, they are now both inedible. I'm not sure what happened there. :(

Go to the self checkout lane. Drop your Honeycrisp apples on the machine and accidentally punch in the code for an alternative cheap ass apple (4146 for example).

It might make you a terrible person.

I like a good crisp Missouri Jonathan apple. Vaughn's Orchard in Weston was the best till it finally ceased operations. I remember people would line up outside the cider shack for apple donuts or fritters and hot cider.

The end.

Devil Dogs ring a bell - but I can't place them.

Very nice product outside it's health risks.
