View Full Version : Music If given the chance to go back in time and see ONE band/musical act, who would it be?

I have a flash drive in my car that holds a ton of music, and I let it shuffle on the drive home tonight. Heard a live version of Queen's Fat Bottom Girls that I forgot I even had. Started thinking about some of the YouTube clips I've seen in their performances when Freddie was in his prime.

That morphed into another thought - if I could travel back in time to see one band or musical act perform, who would it be, when would it be and where?

I'm not sure I can even answer my own question, but I bet some of you guys can, and it beats talk of 4-12 and chicken and waffles.

Go.

That's what makes this so difficult.

While a lot of folks don't care for their music, a Doors show in San Francisco or the Sunset Strip would have been cool.

Zepplin at a place like London Fog or The Roxy? Unreal.

This makes me think of Lynyrd Skynyrd as well. I'm not a huge fan, but I imagine that they would have put on a good concert.

Don't laugh, but seeing a band like Styx in the 1970s would be good. Second-tier compared to many of the other selections here, but they would have been interesting.

I saw a few bands early on.

Vanilla Fudge in 1968, their version of 'You keep me hanging on' was the heaviest song I ever heard at that point in time and Carmine Appice was amazing.

Allman Brothers at a bar in St. Petersburg around Oct 1969, didn't know who they were when I walked in except they had two drummers, the keyboardist was the singer and some guy with long blonde hair was killing his red guitar. When they finished the night, they said we're the Allman Bros and our debut album comes out next month.

Jethro Tull in 1972, one of the best shows I've ever seen.

Deep Purple 1972, very disappointing, not enough of Gillan.

Black Sabbath 1972, Ozzy walked off the stage on the second song, end of show.

Queen 1974, outdoor at Sunshine Speedway St. Petersburg, Fire Marshall would not approve the stage, show could not go on. What's up, two in row.

Uriah Heep 1974, the late great David Bryon was the best frontman ever.

Atlanta Rhythm Section 1977, good party band.

Blackfoot & Johnny Van Zant 1979, good ole southern rock, Rick Medlocke smokes the guitar.

Styx 1979, really great sound and show.

Journey 1980, Steve Perry tremendous singer. The Babys as an opening act were no slouch.

1980 Blue Oyster Cult & The Cars, show cancelled the day of the event, their equipment truck broke down.

Foreigner 1982, great show.

Billy Squier 1982, Saga opened and blew him away.

Molly Hatchet 1982, Danny Joe Brown had just returned, one of the loudest bands I ever heard but were great.

REM 1984, very psychedelic lighting and performance, great!!

Def Leppard, Pyromania tour, great show, Krokus and Gary Moore opened, all were good.

Scorpions 1984, one of the best twin guitar attacks, Bon Jovi opened and kinda sucked, nobody knew who they were.

U2 1985, Unforgettable Fire tour, good show, not great but good.

Pink Floyd 1988, great light and music.

Peter Gabriel 1988 & 1993, one of my favorites.

Boston 1997 Great Show, both singers were there.

Styx & Kansas 1997 both were great!!

I was at the show in 88 at Arrowhead. Was a little buzzed driving in and made a wrong turn and ended up in the VIP Parking. The 2 girls with my buddy and I went down to the floor from our lower level sideline seats, probably section 104.

The came back with floor stubs for us so when we all went down to the floor with no seats we decided to try the front row. Low and behold there were 4 seats front row center empty so we grabbed them.

At the end of the intermission someone came for my buddy and his girls seats so they had to bounce back to 2nd row center.

I still remember looking back at the crowd and realizing that everybody wanted my seat, which really wasn't even mine. Great time!

Others were Landover (people actually got thrown out for smoking tobacco, see difference of west coast shows on same tour later), Memphis, Soldier Field, Riverport in Stl, Denver (McNicholls before it closed), Phoenix, Eugene (many topless chicks on the same Landover tour) Mountain View (on same Landover tour, saw a dude with a 3 foot glass bong on the lawn. This is easy for me. First and foremost would be Bob Marley and the Wailers playing the One Love Peace concert on April 22, 1978 in Kingston.
This concert was held during a political civil war in Jamaica between opposing parties Jamaican Labour Party and the People's National Party. The concert came to its peak during Bob Marley & The Wailers' performance of "Jammin'", when Marley joined the hands of political rivals Michael Manley (PNP) and Edward Seaga (JLP).

While we're kinda of on the subject did anyone get the ending of "The Wall" (the movie) because I didn't get it. No resolution what so ever.

This. Never got the chance.

Honorable mention (in no particular order):

The Who around the time of "Who's Next" (actually anytime when Moon was still alive)
Bowie in his Ziggy Stardust phase.
Early Black Sabbath (saw Sabbath with Dio and saw Ozzy solo a couple of times)
Blondie at CBGB
Ramones at CBGB
Sex Pistols
Pink Floyd when Waters was still in the band
early Johnny Cash (with the Tennessee Three)
Emmylou Harris when she still had the Hot Band

The Grateful Dead..no question.

I saw them quite a few times, but I WOULD love to go back to some of the Acid Test shows, just because they were important historically.

Guns N Roses with Buckethead the best guitarist to ever play for GnR.

I would love to go see GnR when the entire band was together but also a huge Beatles fan.

I saw the Use your Illusion tour when I was in high school. Pretty epic.

Go.

Seeing Queen in their heyday would be pure awesome.

There are just too many for me to pick one, too many great choices... though I really love Lonewolf Ed's suggestion of Sabbath or KCgal? who said Cash, Elvis, Holly, Lewis etc playing small gigs in the early days.

Either one of those would be a mind crusher.

More recently, I'd love to have caught GNR at some Hollywood club before they broke out, same thing for Nirvana in some Seattle club before they hit it big.

A very classy choice, I wouldn't argue with that at all, I would deeply enjoy it no question... particularly if Dino opened for him.

I wish I had seen a Springsteen concert back in the 1970s. But Queen would be good, too.

Queen put on a great show!! Glad I got to see them!!

I would go back and see Rush-their first show with Neil in Cleveland.

I would go back and see Jimi when he burned his guitar at the Monterey Pop Festival. Seeing that from the front row would be like seeing God.

Also would go back and hang out in Jimmy Page's living room the first time Led Zeppelin met and played through a few songs. Those first crunching chords change music forever.

Would go back and hang out in Sun studio and wait for Elvis to get done driving his truck and stop by to sing with the gang. Perkins, Cash as well.

Richie Valenzuela, Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper. Knowing me I would have tried to stop them from getting on the plane and altered the time line and the space time continuem. We would be in an Alternate 2014.

The 930 club in DC around 79-80 to see Bad Brains and Minor Threat.

The Church in Hermosa Beach, CA in 77 to see Black Flag when Keith Morris was the lead singer.

So, this is a pretty greta thread. There's several I would have loved to be a part of, like many have mentioned the dead, zeppelin, etc.

However, I wonder what bands performing now might people look back on in 40 years and say damn, I wish I had the chance to go back in time and see those guys play. I get to plenty of shows when I have the chance, am tagging along with the wife to some country shows this year, but I must say I'm pretty stoked to have tix to see the Avett bros in a couple weeks, and also pretty pumped to know Jack White will be playing the midland in august. Gonna try and jump on the chance at presale on thurs for that.

Early Beatles, James Brown, or obviously Led for historical significance but Live at Fillmore East is often considered the greatest live album, so gotta say Allman Brothers with Duane.

You can just feel it in all of the recordings from that time, it would be perfect to actually be there.

I can't believe I didn't see them mentioned yet. Maybe some back in the day Parliament would be crazy too. There was a tour back in the day too that was Bob Marley and the Wailers and The Commodores that woulda been good. And Stevie Wonder in his prime.

Stones at Altamont with Sonny Barger.

"Now that the situation had totally spun out of control, the Stones were talking a lot of “brothers and sisters” type of hippie shit. Everybody who tried to rush the stage was thrown off. A big fat girl was trying to get up on the stage. She was topless and probably very @#$%& up on drugs. Some of the Angels tried to stop her, and it looked to me like they were trying to get her off the stage without hurting her. Keith Richards of the Stones leaned over to me and said, “Man, I’m sure it doesn’t take three or four great big Hell’s Angels to get that bird off the stage.” I just walked over to the edge of the stage and kicked her in the head.

“How’s that?”

I didn’t see the stabbing of Meredith Hunter but I remember him. Hunter had a loud green suit on and really stuck out from the crowd. When he rushed the stage and pulled out a huge black gun, the rest of what went down happened pretty fast. Jagger was singing “Under My Thumb” when the Hell’s Angels bravely moved quickly toward the gunman. Once we jumped off the stage, that’s when I heard the gun go off. All I know is that Hunter was up on the stage, got knocked off; a gun was flashed and fired. Then he was stabbed. He was close to the stage when we stopped him. By the time I got to Hunter he had already been stabbed. We picked him up and passed him over to the medics.

Meredith had shot a Hell’s Angel. Since the guy he shot was a fugitive at the time, we couldn’t take him to a doctor or an emergency ward. It was just a flesh wound anyway."

So, as focking fast as Jack White sold out, and as much as I focking paid through Vivid Seats to get a couple after the on-sale sold out in just a matter of minutes, I think it is now safe to say that I hopefully have tix to a concert that is a tough to get as any of these would have been in their prime. Fock.
