Had it today for lunch.

Orange Chicken with some of that fried rice stuff and egg roll stuff.

Delish!

What are some of your faves?

Orange chicken, mushroom chicken, sesame chicken, sweet and sour chicken, it's all good. Add a little fried rice and a couple egg rolls, and you're good to go.

I enjoy it.

I was driving around my old hometown today and looking around at some of the advancements the city has made over the last decade. My son was sleeping in the back, and I wanted to grab some lunch, so I had to hit a drive through. I swung in to Taco Bueno because I had never tried it, got my food and hit the road again. A quarter mile down the road I passed a Panda Express. I sobbed uncontrollably.

I love Chinese. I refuse to eat fast food Chinese.

Chicken items are good. I'm a fan of the Sweetfire Chicken.

But their fake crab rangoon might be the worst in town...

It sucks unless you get the Orange Chicken. Their beef stuff, and virtually anything other than the Orange Chicken isn't very good. So strange how good their Orange Chicken is compared to all the other crap they have though.

We had it last night. I think everyone loves their Orange Chicken, but we also had a "spicy" beef dish that I hadn't had there before. It was yummy. I can also feed my family of 5 for $40 and that's pretty cool.

Also pretty sure Ziggy Marley was next to us in the parking lot. I wanted him to kiss my baby, who rumor has it was named after his father.

But he drove away too fast.
Which was probably for the best if it really wasn't Ziggy.

It's always empty and the staff is very polite. The woman who runs it will occasionally give everyone in the dining room a free piece of coffee cake after their meal. She tries hard to make sure the customers are happy.

Decent and credible for fast Chinese. Thing is, regular slow Chinese doesn't cost any more and sometimes less. At least in my little town. The 2 regular Chinese joints are better and cheaper than Panda. OK, almost the same price...

I made the mistake though of having the Orange Chicken with the Beijing Beef. Oh, they are both good, but add the calories and fat together sometimes. Those are the 2 biggest diet busters on the menu, and of course they are the 2 best items. I try to stay with things like the string bean chicken, which have way less fat.

I hear you. I was in Denver about a month ago and a client took us over to a place called "United China" at 128th and Colorado in Thornton. The Sesame Chicken was outstanding. Whatever you do, though, don't eat BBQ in Denver. Sucks.

There IS a place, however, in Loveland called "Nordy's" - Surprisingly good.

If your Thai restaurant serves this do yourself a favor and try it. Suki Haeng or in USA it may just be on menu as Suki Dry. You will think me latter.

I like this Thai version better that the Japanese sukiyaki in all the broth. This is a s Thai as you can get. This is sold by street venders in Thailand. Its like Hot dog or Pizza to Thai folk. The Oyster sauce Ive had is just perfect lots garlic and just right amount of heat. The picture I posted is best I could find it looks a little light in the noodle from what I have had. The protein used is usually pork, scallops, oyster, chicken or shrimp or a mixture of all.

Whenever I go there, I think to myself, "Try something besides the orange chicken. There may be other great entrees there. Look at that beef and broccoli. It looks great. Look at that sweetfire chicken. I bet that's delicious. Don't just order the orange chicken. Try something new."

And then the person says, "What would you like?" and I say, "Orange chicken." I just can't take the risk of passing up the orange chicken.

The only way I have been able to pass up the Orange Chicken is to go there twice in the same week. Other then that I cannot pass it up. Unless they are out of it, I am in a rush and it will take a long time to get it ready again.

You're missing a lot, like a whole world of curries.

Massaman, red, green, panang, yellow, etc.. etc.. they're all awesome and all have very different flavor profiles.

Tom Ka Gai soup (coconut chicken soup) is probably my all time favorite thai dish.

I'm currently on a thai salad kick, so larb has been one of my gotos.

No. It's the food itself. It's normally higher in fiber. The MSG can make you eat more than you normally would, because it encourages appetite. So it's more likely that you're eating higher fiber food, and more of it.

It's already been going on in a lot of food progressive cities, but I predict a backlash against "Chinese" food similar to what has happened with Tex Mex where people start making distinctions between "real" Chinese food and americanized chinese food.

I guess my point being: the simple standard dishes we get on chinese buffets are no more representative of chinese cuisine than Taco Bell is representative of Mexican.

Of course, the really interesting thing is that Tex Mex has now come back into fashion where chef-based restaurants are actually embracing and elevating Tex Mex cuisine. We have a place called "The Heights Taco & Tamale Co." in Little Rock that's doing it, and it's freaking fantastic.

Interesting. Did Panda Express just reach the Midwest in the past few years?

Back when I lived in West Hollywood (and was poor as dirt), there was a Panda Express inside the Pavillion's grocery store a block from my apartment. Back in the mid-90's, it was only $4.25 for a 2 item meal, which included either fried rice or chow mein. I used to "treat myself" on Friday's and it was always good. But after I moved from that location, I rarely ate Panda after that.

Recently, a Panda Express opened about a 1/2 mile from my home. It's twice as expensive as it used to be but they have a much larger selection. It's always busy, so the food is always fresh. My kids like it quite a bit and I still enjoy their black pepper chicken, mushroom chicken and especially their string bean chicken.

It's not my first choice for Chinese but I can't recall ever having a bad experience or dish. But there's always a line (and poor parking) so it can be a hassle at times but other than that, it's fine. It's certainly better than Jack in the Box or McDonald's or Subway, which are the other nearby fast food restaurants. There's a Chipotle that's fairly close but parking is a disaster.

I guess it depends on the definition of "spicy" but in my experience, their spiciest sauces would be about "medium" when compared to true Thai food and their normal sauces I would describe as "flavorful".

I think they're beginning to roll them out across the country so hopefully, they'll put one in your area or nearby.

True Thai food would probably kill me.

I mentioned in another thread that I once asked for a dish to be "hot" at Palms Thai, which is a great local Thai restaurant, and I couldn't eat it.

One bite and I was sweating from every pore in my body.

I go for medium now. :D

I used to like spicy food. I wasn't the type to drink hot sauce straight or eat ghost peppers or anything like that but ate pretty spicy food frequently as my wife likes it. Then, about three years ago, it's like God flipped a switch and I suddenly couldn't eat it all. The reaction to capsaicin is now crazy over-the-top. It's incredibly painful for some reason. I've even reacted to spicy dill pickles, much to my embarrassment. It sucks as it limits a lot of what I used to eat. I still don't know why it changed. I can handle horseradish hot just fine but not capsaicin hot.

They opened a Panda Express about 5 miles from my house a couple of months ago. I haven't been there. I've thought about going, but my car can't get past the mom and pop Chinese place that's much closer. $5.75 lunch including drink and $7.25 combo dinners are tough to beat. I can't eat all the food, so there are leftovers for the next day.

I hope that switch never flips for me.

I have a pretty good capacity for heat. My problem is, while I can consume it, I look like an asshole doing so. I love it, but even moderate heat and I'm sweating and my nose is running. So I pretty much have to eat spicy food in solitude, with a hefty towel at my side. A nice Bhut Jolokia salsa, and I look like I walked home in the rain.

Hmm, I'll have to check it out next time I'm down there, most places around here just don't bring the heat, even after trying to convince them I want Thai hot and not white guy hot. Ate at some small plate restaurant near there last time I was in LA, great food and a pretty solid beer list... and I didn't pay for it, which was nice. :D

Probably. The weird thing is that my dad is the opposite. The older he gets, the hotter he likes his food, like all his tastebuds are dead or something.

I've developed a hiccup thing in recent years... and for stuff that's not even that hot relative to my tolerance. Sometimes I'll start hiccuping seconds after the first bite, but then I just start eating faster out of spite... asshole diaphragm.

I don't get the devotion that Springfieldians have to their weird Chinese food. Several relatives who have lived there talk about the local Chinese food with awe, but I tried it a couple of times and it seemed like it was Chinese food in gravy or something.

I'm that way with horseradish type food. I would get an order of BBQ pork at the Chinese place and if I wasn't slinging snot after the first bite, the mustard wasn't hot enough.

There are several really great Thai places in Hollywood that I can recommend.

If you're over in Beverly Hills, there's a place called Natalie Thai that's at Robertson and Olympic that's also outstanding.

I'd definitely suggest medium until you taste it. :D

Thai is one of the best cuisines in St. Louis. There's a family that has a whole range of restaurants on The Loop, from grab'n'go to formal French Thai. Then there's South Grand with great Thai and Vietnamese, as well as a great traditional Chinese place.

On The Loop you get another 100 cuisines to choose from, from bar food to Ethiopian to Armenian to Farm to Table to the best NY pizza west of the Hudson.

South Grand has the ethnic markets to buy and make your own.

I don't know that I would go that far. If you did a blind tastes test of their Orange Chicken, with some other chinese places Orange Chicken you might even vote Panda's better. It's not really the same to compare to fast good, it's more of a buffet and the Panda employees serve you some the buffet.

Not saying it's good, because most of their other stuff isn't very good but it's better than a decent amount of chinese buffets, but usually not better than good sit down chinese restaurants.

I agree. Now I'm no high highfalutin bitch but I also am not trailer trash. Their Orange chicken is very good as is one of their beef dishes I can't remember the name of. You can have better and you can have worse. For something quick, it's a pretty good choice.

I'd like to go on a date with Dane to his place though. That looks great. He can pay though.

Actually, what blows away Panda is Southeast Asian Shophouse, which we've had for years and is slowly rolling out across the U.S.

Same peeps as Chipotle, except unlike Chipotle, it's not "Americanized".

I don't get the hate for Panda Express. It's really good for what it is. American-Chinese fast food. The ingredients are always fresh. They're generous with quantity. They use red bell peppers(huge plus for me). I've never really been disappointed. Sweetfire chicken or Beijing Beef is usually my go-to.

I remember being poor in LA in the 90’s, when the nearest Panda Express was located just up Santa Monica Blvd. inside a Pavillions grocery store.

I’d usually “treat myself” on Friday’s by stopping at Panda and getting a 2 item meal, which at the time, was $4.49.

These days, it’s exactly as you stated: A typical stop at Panda for a family of four is easily $35 dollars, if not $40.

I don’t consider that “Poverty Food”.

Funny they used to be inside Kroger, here - then they 'now' are mostly free-standing. There's one (ironically) neighboring a GNC Health store - only those two places and a Chase bank in the same strip mall.

It's the McDonald's of Chinese food. I eat there once/twice a week because there's one at the nearest food court, its reasonably priced, the food is okay, and the line tends to move quickly.

Sure wish there was a decent sit down Chinese place in the area, though. You'd think there would be one in the middle of the Chicago Loop, but there aren't.
