View Full Version : Chiefs Why did Alex Smith show up to camp?

Alex Smith 4Ever

Just curious because he could have held out and demanded an $80 million+ contract and the Chiefs would have been forced to pay him

Is Alex that great of a guy that he would sacrifice his future for the Chiefs? It's well know that he is the most charitable man in the NFL, but this is a little different given that the main beneficiaries are the Chiefs ownership

I think you are correct. Alex Smith is that great of a guy.
Heck, he could have demanded 90 million. He's just a real swell fella.

To be fair, Manziel's hopes of becoming a successful QB were squashed when Cleveland drafted him.

I have no idea why anyone would think Alex Smith would NOT show up.

He's under contract

He's not grossly underpaid

He's the starting QB.

He doesn't want traded

I can't think of any QB who's held out under those circumstances.

Chiefnj2

He showed up because: he has already made a ton of money, he's making good money this year, he's a leader, he knows Reid loves him and he gets to wear a neon pinny which means nobody can touch him thus greatly lowering his chance of injury in camp.

Alex Smith showed up for lots of reasons. For starters, nearly 10 million of them.

Not only that, if he holds out, Chiefs dont HAVE to pay him. Also, as said above, there is little injury risk.

Sandy Vagina
06-19-2014, 07:15 AM
There's no way he wouldn't show up.

He's already wealthy, so an unlikely injury would suck, but wouldn't crush his world. He has always recognized how important OTAs and camps are to establish chemistry with players, and a deeper understanding of the yr 2 system. He does want that long-term deal, but has enough confidence in himself to work through the year to get it, if necessary. Not showing up could and would adversely affect that goal.

Dude just wants his team to be a winner. Not showing up only hurts that primary goal.

Starting competition - Kevin Kolb got injured running from one field to another. No joke. He got tripped on the wet rubber or something.

Alex Smith= Uber high character guy. He is too nice sometimes and screws himself, but he is a high character guy and you love him for that reason. He has to be among the nicest people in football.

I do wish he wasn't so nice and had a little more edge or killer instinct.

I don't buy this ranking that Alex is the 5th worst starting QB in the NFL. Certainly has no analysis behind it. I think it is just sensationalistic. Alex is easily a 16th to 20th QB.

5. Alex Smith, Kansas City

No one seems to know exactly how good Alex Smith is. After a series of largely forgettable seasons to kick off his tenure with the San Francisco 49ers, Smith was the starting QB for a full season with a Niners squad that went 13-3-0 before being supplanted by Colin Kaepernick and shipping off to Kansas City. While the Chiefs went 11-4 with Smith under center, the 30-year-old remains an enigma, as the Chiefs failed to make a significant mark on the postseason. There’s also the matter of Jamaal Charles, who came back from an injury shortened 2012 to deliver a knockout 2013 campaign. The reason he’s so high on this list? After eight seasons, no one knows if he’s any good. That’s fairly damning in and of itself, especially for a number one overall pick.

What hack wrote this article? Jamaal wasn't injured in 2012 and you could argue, despite the team's lack of success overall, that he had a fantastic 2012 campaign. I think he finished with something like 1,500 rushing yards.

They are OTAs, not MTAs.

It's more like "do you show up on the weekend without overtime pay?" You might if you were really dedicated to your product or coworkers. Or perhaps you are trying to impress your boss or hone your skills in order to get a big raise (this is what Axl is doing).

Beep, wrong. Not a hater either.

I just realized by 2009 that he was never going to be the elite first overall pick he was drafted to be. I assumed the 49ers made a wise pick in 2005 and just went with that. By 2009, I realized Alex was over drafted and was never going to be more than a serviceable journeyman starter in the NFL.

I don't hate him at all, but I agree that you go a lot further in the playoffs with a top 10 QB than you do without one.

When Jim Harbaugh said, "Do we need a top-flight quarterback? Do human beings need air to breathe?", I realized Alex was a short time in San Francisco, even as he was a free agent at the time.

In pre-season games 2012, I saw Colin Kaepernick do things that showed me his elite potential. I assumed that a QB Guru like Jim Harbaugh would coach Kaepernick to fulfill his elite potential. There is no guarantee there, but I still believe it will happen, and sooner than later.

No, I don't hate Alex and never did.

But I don't suck Alex's cock and worship him on the Alter of the Blessed Church of Alex Smith, like you and the rest of his devoted Acolytes do.

Anybody who doesn't worship the Blessed Church of Alex Smith is called a "hater".

Its funny how no one ever mentions the 6 OC's in his first 6 seasons out there, such a great way to build consistency and get your young QB off to a good start.

At least the QB can't be hit in minicamps and OTA's. I was bummed that we didn't get Manziel, but after reading how he's handling his offseason, I'm glad that we didn't get him after all. As an SEC guy, I think we got a steal in drafting Murray.
