Billionaire Wants To Break Up California Into 6 States.

http://sourcefed.com/billionaire-wants-to-break-up-california-into-6-states/

Silicon Valley enthusiast, and venture capitalist Tom Draper is known for backing incredible companies such as Hotmail, Tesla Motors, and Skype. Now he’s backing a new proposal: Breaking up California into 6 separate states.

Draper feels a large state such as California would be better served by smaller governments. Roger Salazar, a spokesmen for the campaign stated:

“It’s important because it will help us create a more responsive, more innovative and more local government, and that ultimately will end up being better for all of Californians. The idea … is to create six states with responsive local governments – states that are more representative and accountable to their constituents.”

The campaign has gathered over 800,000 signatures needed to place the measure onto the November 2016 ballot, but opponents say that it has little chance making it past both the voters and Congress. Steven Maviglio, a Democratic political strategist who has formed the group OneCalifornia with GOP strategist Joe Rodota to fight Draper’s plan stated:

“This is a colossal and divisive waste of time, energy, and money that will hurt the California brand. It has zero chance of passage. But what it does is scare investment away… at a time when the Governor is leading us to an economic comeback.”

Draper’s plan splits the world’s eighth-largest economy along geographic lines creating the states.

Silicon Valley would include the valley along with the San Francisco Bay Area, Jefferson would encompass the northernmost region, North California would encompass the state capital of Sacramento, while South California would be made up of San Diego and the eastern suburbs of Los Angeles. Los Angeles would be part of a state called West California.

Central California would take Fresno, Bakersfield, and Stockton and would also be the largest of the six.

Pretty sure the only way this happens is if Texas gets split as well. Central CA would immediately become the consensus shittiest state in the union.

I love thinking about these things.

One could argue that states should split up once they get to a certain size. They get disproportionately low representation in the Senate, and they get so big that it's difficult to govern efficiently. (And yeah, I'm looking at you, federal government.)

Also, really big states are more likely to have the resources to secede, so in a long-term situation it's best to keep them small if you're looking at the situation from a federal point of view. But if you're a libertarian maybe you want that possibility to be more likely.

As another argument against breaking up, bigger states have more resources to throw at problems and address them. California has been the laboratory for a lot of social experiments over the years, and that's a good thing. But perhaps one could argue that even more social experiments would take place if we had more states. Plus, do we really want a bigger Senate? I'm not sure.

As for me, I like maps, so I vote to break them up. It'll create new maps. We should have a constitutional amendment that once a state hits 30 million people it gets split in two.

The division idea could work, but the names of the states are just horrible. You're going to name a state (Silicon Valley) after a small geographic feature within that state? That's like changing the name of Arizona to Grand Canyon.

Also, the northernmost state is not called North California, so there's that.

There are 38 counties in Colorado that are larger than Rhode Island. I find that interesting. There are 12 counties in Colorado larger than Delaware, which is the second-smallest state.

We can't quite beat Connecticut, which is the third-smallest state, but there are two counties that are roughly 98 percent of the size of Connecticut.

However, the other half of the story is that the two largest counties have a total of about 29,000 people compared to 3.5 million in Connecticut.

My dad is a native Californian, and he says he can never go back to live. Like you say, nice place to visit, don't want to live there.

My cousin, at the time an unemployed electrician, came out for a visit a few years ago. We were sitting in the backyard at my firepit, and he was marveling at the "mansion" I lived in...it's a 1600 square foot Celebrity home, but it has a huge back yard. He said that my house would probably go for 750K out where he is because of the size of the property. That blew my damn mind.

Needless to say, it ain't worth any where NEAR that here in Nebraska. I told him to move out here, we have jobs, the cost of living is reasonable and the people are generally good. He laughed and said he could never leave Cali.

I always laugh when people claim there isn't anything to do in midwestern cities. I've been the almost all the big cities minus New York City, and there isn't really much more to do outside of going to the beach. And KC & STL trump LA there IMO because we actually have an NFL team. I really can't figure out, what all these things are to do, more than what we have in Omaha, Kansas City, or St Louis. The weather argument, I get that, but when people claim "there is nothing to do", well, they are doing it wrong.

I can go surfing in the morning and skiing in the afternoon. Granted I don't do either of those things. But I could if I wanted to!

Also pretty much any kind of comedy show, cultural event, ethnic food, art exhibit, festival, concert, etc. you can imagine on any given day. You can go to one of these things every day for the rest of your life in LA if you wanted and never see the same thing twice.

Within a 2 hour trip I have San Diego, mountains, deserts, islands, a jillion interesting ethnic communities. Within a 5 hour drive I have San Francisco, Yosemite, Sequioa/Kings Canyon, Lake Powell/Havasu, Kern/Colorado River, Joshua Tree, Death Valley, Vegas, Palm Springs, Mt. Whitney, Mono Lake, Mexico, world class wine tasting, Hwy 1 on the CA coast, a ton of state parks, etc. That's just off the top of my head.

I love KC, it's where my heart is. But there's pretty much endless stuff to do out here compared to KC. It's why everyone in CA waits until they're 35 to start plopping out babies.

I don't need to repeat suzzers post but there's a diversity missing in Midwest offerings. Yes, you can find something to do. But they're often going to be the same things you've been doing all your life. And all your parents life. With the same people.

Well I Meant like go to the mountains to hike, or camp or whatever people do in the mountains. I've been to California, you drive through them. I get that, I just don't see how that adds anything to do

Mountain living translates well to a Midwest lifestyle. But it is expensive and highly sought after. And when you're sick of your neighbors it's only a 15 min drive down the mountain and you disappear.

How will us Midwestern's ever survive without the awesomeness of those west coast people?

Do we bow when you grace our states with your presence?

Sometimes I wish we didn't have shit to do out here in no mans land... We are freaking busy with festivals every weekend, concerts here and there, NBA, NFL, College Football, camping, wake boarding, hunting, fishing, casinos, Pro and minor league soccer.... Every weekend is packed with something going on...

How will we ever survive the boredom? Maybe we should build tee pees or something...

Each state in offers its own set of unique traits that separate it from the others...

I love Kansas for the plains and prairies, the sunsets are amazing.

You cant beat Colorado for the mining history and Mountains...

I have only been to California a few times. What I saw was pretty nice. It has a lot to offer. Palm Springs, LA, SF and Oakland...

Yes, but you are in the vast minority. I'm not saying that to be nasty. Like Frankie, I'm a person of two states. Kansas still feels like home to me (and I was there all last week), but I'm not going to argue that the natural beauty of Kansas compares to the natural beauty of Colorado, because it doesn't, IMO. At least the mountainous part of Colorado. Eastern Colorado is just Western Kansas.

But seriously, I'm not disputing that the natural beauty of California & Colorado isn't better than Iowa or Kansas. But for the vast majority of people this doesn't translate for more to do. I just see it everyday when I'm in Miami, LA, or Vegas just the view people have of people from the Midwest. I tell them I'm from Kansas and they automatically think that I live on a farm, and that my day consists of milking cows. They seem to be completely oblivious that there are buildings higher than two stories here & think that there is literally nothing to do except watch paint dry. I usually just go along with it, tell them I herd goats & farm wheat or something. And just totally make shit up to go along with their stereotype about me. They always ask me why I don't have a Southern Accent too, wtf do you people not look at a map?

No big chain store like Home depot, best buy etc. in a 200 mile radius. We finally got a small walmart in the back of the mall and I've been there once(Walmart was not welcome in this community).
