View Full Version : Life Which state would you want to live in?

BigRedChief
07-16-2014, 06:29 PM
This poll is only for the 50 states. Vbulletin forums at this level can only do 50 choices. So no international choices or Gaz option.

You determine the reason. Whatever reason, its your reason.

You want to live at the beach? Desert? Mountains? whatever.

You want to live there for the climate, job market, culture etc.

Live there when you no have kids, when your retired etc.

It's your call and vote.

Im not talking about a life built around smoking pot. Im not talking about sitting around smoking pot 24/7.

Im a professional in my field, pay my taxes, and live a normal life like anyone else. I would do the same no matter where I lived.

At the moment I do pretty well for myself and the wife makes a good living. I inherited a decent sum of money from my grandfather a few years ago that has performed well in the stock market.

Things can change quickly, but if I'm not able to retire in Hawaii I will be very disappointed.

I can't really decide where I would like to live. I love a lot about California, the weather, Beaches, and mountains. Cost of home ownership is not a big deal for me as I am a long time homeowner. Property taxes aren't too bad considering they have a form of a cap. Utilities aren't bad because you don't need a lot of heating and cooling.

I hate the politics and general dumbassery of the elected officials.

I like Hawaii, Maui in particular but think I would get Island Fever.

I definitely don't want to be in the flat lands, I need the Mountain views. We would prefer a mild climate not too cold not too hot.

Its a tough decision that Mrs. 2Bike and I have been batting around the last couple of years. She would really like to stay here but I on the other hand think about cashing out of Calif. and getting a lot more bang for my retirement buck.

My choices vary wildly by the circumstances of 'living in a state."

Is money an object? No in the sense of 'can I spend like an asshole?' but more like 'rent and utilities are not a concern.'

Do I have any control over where I end up in said state? I'd love to live in NY's five boroughs [preferably Manhattan], but would probably prefer Alaska or Idaho to Buffalo, NY.

Do I have any control/sway over who joins me. ie, does moving somewhere remote demand loved ones or close friends remain behind, or do I get a 'who's with me' opportunity?

In all, the two things that keep me from saying Manhattan, full stop, is;

Cars, and
a space to wield power tools, woodworking, metal working, welding, motor and electronics repair/fabrication, all are such a source of relaxation.

In terms of being close to family and friends in a nice city where my wife and I both love our current jobs, it's hard to top for me what I have right now living in Madison, WI. Bunch of assumptions there on minor social "left wing" ideas. You're wrong about Mass though. I wouldn't mind living in some different states/cities for a year at a time.

I'd pick the North Carolina Coast, inland in the foothills and mountains. Then outside Philly, in Maryland near the Coast, Maine, Oregon, Washington, Northern Cal, Colorado, Montana, Arizona and especially Alaska. I'd pick those states. Then parts of Europe, Italy, France, Austria, Norway and England.

Not Texas—way too flat but perhaps Austin and Hill Country but only for 6 months.

I was doing some work in that area and spent some time in Watertown, SD. I felt like I had stepped into a Norman Rockwell painting. The only thing that ruined it was the 90 mph winds blowing the garbage cans down the street.

Also, my sister and her family lived in Spearfish, SD for a while (it's near Sturgis). I guess it was pretty nice there. They also lived in Minot, ND. That wasn't so nice.

Mother of God!!

I have peacocks roaming my lawn or neighborhood, white herons or egrets, mama ducks with her ducklings. You may bump into a manatee under water in certain swimming areas, gators may be around, even sometimes in your pool, or get in your living room and a python may occasionally be found in your toilet or outdoor grill but that's our wildlife!

But this time of year we just stay indoors with our central AC more or float in our pools if we go out. We have the remaining 9 months to be out.

We do have some of the worst bugs. Palmetto bugs are basically inch-long roaches with wings and the mosquitoes are the most aggressive I've ever encountered.

Humidity sucks in the summertime but I'm used to it by now. My skin gets very dry in the "winter time".

Gators are cool, if you ask me. I had family down here a couple weeks ago and they couldn't believe alligators were roaming free in our back yards and on golf courses and what not..

Yeah, some places are more scenic than others. But it also depends on your perspective.

For example, at Zion, you can get some pretty good views of the sandstone cliffs while on the canyon floor. But if you hike 1,500 ft. all the way up the Angels Landing trail, you'll get an epic view.

At Bryce Canyon, you didn't have to hike at all for epic views. Just pull up to the parking lot at the designated view points, and walk up to the edge. But its a lot more satisfying to hike the trails and see everything up close. So many amazing sandstone formations.

Like Colorado, Washington has mountains and legalized pot. But it also has an ocean view and hardly any Donk fans.

Yeah and shit loads of wild fires right now. I was wondering where all the smoke was coming from around here and had to do a search.

Eastern Washington is high desert plains. They are not in the rain shadow like Western Washington.

Colorado is over rated here because of the pot thing. Honestly, they smoke pot here in montana openly. No biggy.

I can't imagine the pot thing has anything to do with it. Colorado is just an amazing state.

New York so far has 0 votes and New Jersey has 1.

LMAO

Hey, I haven't voted, but I posted that I'd go NY, if I could be guaranteed a spot in the Boroughs, not some boonies 15 minutes outside Buffalo.

As long as I could achieve the same standard of living, Hawaii. I visited my buddy at Pearl. That place rules.

You need to have a lot of capital moving from the Midwest to Hawaii. The housing cost alone would kill you.

Saturday was really bad. Thick smoke that would make your eyes burn. However, it cleared out overnight and yesterday was beautiful. Cooler and no smoke.

It is supposed to be a lot cooler over the next few days with a chance of rain. That should help, though the Chelan fire will probably burn until the snow comes.

The Catskills are beautiful. While we are at it, 1/2 of New Jersey has some beautiful land also.

The Garden State. Definitely has some very nice areas. Unless you only see the heavy industrial parts near NYC. Then it looks like a dystopia.

Upstate NY is very nice and parts of Long Island too.

That's Florida. But ya' know what? I was bit more in Mass and NH then down here. Our pool/patio areas are usually in screened-in cages. And we stay indoors more in summer, come out the other 9 months. In fact there's a virus in Mass now from bites making people ill.

Or hike the bottom though the virgin river. It is amazing in the canyon. I took this picture 4th of July two years ago down there.

Is that the Narrows?

I would liked to have hiked it, but didn't have enough time. But I'm doing it next time for sure.

If I had to rank the fifty states in order based on my own personal preference, I would go like this:

Bring it on

Colorado
Alaska
Oregon
Utah

Sure, no problem

Wyoming
California
Hawaii
Washington
Idaho

Eh, Okay

New Mexico
Nevada
South Dakota
Montana
Florida
Minnesota
New Hampshire
Vermont
Michigan

If I have to

Arizona
New York
North Dakota
Nebraska
Kansas
Rhode Island
Maine
Texas

I'd really rather not

Iowa
Kentucky
Delaware
South Carolina
West Virginia
Arkansas
Missouri
Oklahoma
Wisconsin

Please, no. Don't make me do it.

Indiana
Massachusetts
District of Columbia
Georgia
Louisiana
Maryland
New Jersey
Tennessee
Mississippi
Connecticut
Illinois
North Carolina
Pennsylvania
Virginia
Alabama
Ohio

It is. Probably a top 5 hike of my life, maybe top 3 and I have been lucky enough to enjoy some really amazing backpacking/hiking. The Subway is next on my list when I make it back to Zion.

I want to do the Subway, too.

Actually, I want to hike all the trails at Zion, but just don't have the time.

I just got back from the Portland regional area.

2nd time going for vacation and I absolutely love it. Granted I haven't been there in the rainy season.

Went white water rafting, went to the coast, took a train to Seattle, went to about 12 breweries, had a great time.

Cost of living isn't outrageous either.

Everybody jokes about how Portland has two seasons - warm rain and cold rain - but it doesn't really rain there as much as people think. I've lived up here (NE WA) for 18 years and still miss the western Oregon weather.

I drown in my skinniest jeans now.

There are several here that hate the springs. I've only been through it and in it as a tourist. And I loved it. But I dig an easy laid back atmosphere. Nightclubs and bars aren't really my top priority.

I'm sure I'll be a mountain hermit in my old age. Complete with Daniel Boone hat and beard.

The Springs is an interesting city. It feels very much like a military complex (which it is, really) and I understand that they have a pretty significant gang/meth problem. It is neat having Pike's Peak right there, though.

A bit off topic but we were talking about Florida wildlife a few pages back. I've lived in Orlando for almost 10 years now and had no idea we had otters. I'm looking at a fucking otter swimming in one of our apartment complex's ponds right now.

This is strange.

Love Colorado, not so sure about Colorado Springs. It's kind of the "Arizona/Texas" of Colorado politically and in terms of religion. Beautiful area, though.

My sweet spot is in between Denver and Boulder, west of the Boulder Turnpike. It's the best of both worlds. You're right in the middle of a major metro area, but you're 5 minutes away from some of the best road and mountain biking, rock climbing, and hiking on the planet.

And if you have the right paperwork, you can grow legally grow 75 ganja plants in your basement. ;)

That is fucking strange. I JUST saw a coyote for the first time in Florida as well about 2 weeks ago.

It was in the middle of a busy ass street right in Orlando. Tons of city all around, but you know how Florida is. There's plenty of green, wooded areas and what not intertwined in the city.
