Geno Atkins is out. Our interior OL will still be tested by Domata Peko though.

Carlos Dunlap should give Stephenson a real test on the outside. If Fisher looks bad against Wallace Gilberry, who's a solid pass rusher but isn't great, I'll be worried.

Defensively, Justin Houston better look like an All-Pro because the Bengals starting RT, Andre Smith, is going to be out. He'll be facing the mediocre Will Svitek. Hali will have the much tougher assignment against the good and steady Andrew Whitworth, we'll get a real indication of what Ford can do as well if he gets a chance to fill in for Hali while the Bengals have their 1st team OL on the field still.

I expect Poe to wreck havoc on their interior OL with rookie Russell Bodine getting the start at center. Has Bailey's off-season bulking paid off, will Devito look any more explosive with the weight he lost?

Jones won't be playing but how will our DBs handle AJ Green and Eifert? Watching Cooper match up 1 on 1 with Green will give us a pretty good indication of his off-season growth.

I think if Alex Smith (i'm not a fan) can stay alive past the first 8 games we can make a run at the playoffs provided we are 4-4. If he is getting clobbered because of our O-line forget about it.

Just looking at the fronts of the NFC West is scary, especially in the case of the Rams, 49ers, and Cardinals. I'm praying that Aldon Smith gets a 6 game suspension, that'll allow me to breath easier without having to worry about Fisher taking him and Justin Smith on.

Hell, we still have to worry about Fisher vs Quinn and Fisher vs Campbell. He held up pretty decently at times against some top pass rushers, but it's the consistency that I worry about. I think he'll do better against Quinn (mostly speed rusher) than he will against a guy like Campbell (he can destroy just about any OT with his power and length).

Most don't know this, but the head coaches of the two teams have already had a conversation about what they want to get out of this game and its basically a scripted game.

The only preseason game opposing coaches don't talk to each other about prior to kickoff is the third preseason game.

Chiefs will keep it simple on offense vs. Bengals, but the expectations don’t change


If Chiefs coach Andy Reid wrote out his objectives for his team’s exhibition opener against the Cincinnati Bengals, they would probably look something like this:

Get everybody some playing time.

Play the veterans enough to get them back into game mode.

Escape with zero serious injuries.

“Not everybody can make the team,” Reid said. “So, if they don’t make this team, they can have some tape out there that they can show — and you want good tape for them, so they have an opportunity to make it somewhere else.”

To that end, it’s up to the coaching staff to not only give players the snaps needed to get that “good tape,” but also put them in position to show what they can do. This presents a bit of a quandary, because NFL coaches — the careful bunch that they are — are averse to revealing any money plays or tendencies in games that do not count.

“Really, the bottom line in any preseason game and really this first one, you want to keep it simple,” offensive coordinator Doug Pederson said. “You want to let the guys play fast and execute. We’ve thrown a lot at them in these first two weeks of camp, and now we can kind of cut it down and streamline it to give them an opportunity to play fast.”

From there, Pederson said, the coaches are only demanding the basics from their players.

“We want to see the effort, and we want to see the hustle,” Pederson said. “We don’t go into this with big game plans and all that. We just want to see our guys execute our offense — it doesn’t matter who is out on that field.”

Still, both Pederson — a former quarterback — and Reid, a former quarterbacks coach — are both offense-first guys at heart, so expect them to keep a close eye on the quarterback position, in particular. Reid has already said that starter Alex Smith and backups Chase Daniel, Tyler Bray and Aaron Murray will each get a quarter to show their stuff Thursday.

Smith said the Chiefs have been working on their full playbook throughout training camp, but have done that with the knowledge that a significant portion of it won’t be used against the Bengals.

“The first preseason game, it is always going to get tailored back a little bit — (that’s) to be expected because you want the focus to be on execution,” Smith said. “You want guys to play fast. We’ve got younger guys, we’ve got new guys, and you want guys to go out there and be comfortable with what’s getting called.”

But while the number of plays they call — and for whom they are called, by the way — on offense Thursday remains to be seen, Smith made it clear that the Chiefs’ objective is a simple one.

“Score some points, be effective,” Smith said. “You’re not game-planning for any of this stuff, you are going out and playing. You’re not sure what they are going to show. You’re not sure what you’re showing. So it is a little different.

“But no question, you’re strapping the pads on, you’re putting the jersey on, you are expected to go out there and play well. That’s the mind-set, certainly for us, and to go win. Certainly the mind-set is to go out there and play well and to get after them.”

Earlier I gave you the names of six offensive players the Kansas City Chiefs are particularly eager to see in Thursday night's preseason opener against the Cincinnati Bengals at Arrowhead Stadium. Here, I'm doing the same for defense.

Cornerback Ron Parker. The Chiefs moved Parker, who has been released eight times in his NFL career, into the starting lineup during offseason practice. He struggled at times then but bounced back to play well in camp, as he did in his limited playing time last season. But the Bengals and their wide receivers provide a better challenge, the kind that can show the Chiefs whether they can trust Parker on a full-time basis when the regular season begins.

Defensive lineman Allen Bailey. He has quietly had a nice training camp, and now it's time for him to show it under the lights. Bailey, a spare defensive lineman for the past three seasons, has been in the starting lineup at one of the end positions. So far, he has held off Vance Walker, one of the Chiefs' biggest free-agent signings.

Safety Malcolm Bronson. He joined the Chiefs last season as an undrafted rookie who was injured, but the Chiefs kept him around all season anyway, indicating he had something they liked. The Chiefs are desperate for help at backup safety, and this is Bronson's chance to show the Chiefs he can provide it.

Safety Daniel Sorensen. An undrafted rookie this year, Sorensen has showed good instincts and ball skills. In the most recent training camp practice on Monday, Sorensen had two interceptions and broke up a pass. He was a standout on special teams in college at Brigham Young and has to play well in that phase in order to make the regular-season roster.

Cornerback Phillip Gaines. The Chiefs' third-round draft pick, Gaines got off to a slow start after arriving in the spring. He looked lost for a time, but he appears to be making progress and the preseason games will be a good gauge of just how much progress. The Chiefs are thin at cornerback and need to know whether Gaines is a project or someone they can count on this season.

Linebacker Dezman Moses. An outside linebacker, Moses plays the same position as Tamba Hali, Justin Houston and Dee Ford, so there won't be much playing time for him this season no matter what. But the Chiefs still think he can be a good player for them. He joined them last season, and though he played some, Moses was never effective because he was injured. He might or might not play against Cincinnati because of an elbow injury, but if not the Chiefs will keep an eye on him in the other exhibitions.

Bodine At Center

An injection of youth into the running game was obvious during the offseason. This will be the first opportunity to see their development. Jeremy Hill, James Wilder, fullback Nikita Whitlock and even second-year back Rex Burkhead will be on display as they vie for the spots on the roster and practice squad.

On The Hunt

The Margus Hunt Project re-emerges after an offseason of working on technique. Last year's second-round pick, right, was seen as a redshirt project last year, but injuries forced him into the defensive line rotation. His progress during the year was notable but coaches hoped to fast-track a major step working with him this offseason. Marvin Lewis said he believes Hunt has made a "huge, huge leap," but Thursday will begin revealing the truth of his development.

Colts center injured

The Colts offense got the ball to start the first half at MetLife Stadium and all looked well.

Andrew Luck moved the team quickly down the field by hitting Hakeem Nicks and T.Y. Hilton while Trent Richardson posed a couple of good runs against a good Jets defensive line. They were in Jets territory and close to probably having the rest of the night off after a job well done when injury struck.

Center Khaled Holmes went down at the end of one of Richardson’s runs and remained on the field to receive medical attention. He eventually limped off to the sideline under his own power and was replaced by undrafted free agent Jonotthan Harrison. The drive continued for a bit, but the Colts were forced to kick a field goal after Harrison snapped the ball past Luck in the red zone.

The interior of the offensive line is not a spot where the Colts can afford an injury. They’ve already lost guard Donald Thomas for the season and are starting a rookie and second-year player at guard around Holmes, who is also in his second professional season.
