View Full Version : Computers PSA: Chrome update makes underlines look weird

If you're a Chrome user, you may have noticed that the underlines on ChiefsPlanet (and other sites - primarily that use Verdana) look too close to the letters, making it kind of hard to read. This is because Chrome moved to Microsoft's DirectWrite in Chrome 37, changing the way fonts are rendered. It's supposed to make them look better, but this is a pretty big deal-breaker for me.
If you, like me, can't stand it, you can go back to the old system by pasting this in your address bar and enabling the setting, then restarting Chrome:
chrome://flags/#disable-direct-write
You can restart chrome by doing:
chrome://restart

I noticed that pig Toolbox no longer asks to confirm whether I want to shut down multiple windows or not. That's REAL irritating.

And for those who have no idea what this is about...

I'm forced to use Chrome at work. No issues yet. I've always been happy with FireFox.

Is 37 still in beta? I thought they were only on 36.

Just rolled out yesterday. You'll update pretty quickly if you haven't already.

Which setting? there's like 100+ and I'm not tech savvy.

I see the difference but I don't care, I'm going to just move on and use it without changing settings.

It should the the one at the very top if you paste this into your address bar:
chrome://flags/#disable-direct-write
It's called "Disable Direct Write". (Yes, you have to enable the disable setting - it's a bit odd.)

You may not have updated. Are you actually seeing the problem?

Strange - no idea unfortunately. For what it's worth, there are a few threads on the Chromium bug tracker about this, so they're looking into it. No telling how long it'll take to fix it though.

Any idea what's causing this fucked up font shit?
I already did the disable direct write thing. No change.

You have to completely restart Chrome after making changes to your advanced settings like that. That means manually shutting down any of its processes that keep running in the background.
Once you got a true restart done, the setting you change took effect.

This has been fixed in Chrome 38 if anyone wants to change the setting back.
