REPORT: RYAN MALLETT TRADED TO HOUSTON, TEXANS RELEASE CASE KEENUM

Sunday, August 31, 2014
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Backup quarterback Case Keenum has been released by the Texans, sources tell ABC-13 sports, but there will still be three quarterbacks on the roster.

The NFL Network's Ian Rapoport cited a source on Twitter confirming that New England Patriots backup quaterback Ryan Mallett has been traded to the Texans.

O'Brien was the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator with the Patriots when the team drafted Mallett in the third round in 2011, Yahoo Sports reports.

Rapoport did say the Texans were forced to Trade instead of claiming Mallett because the Cowboys were also interested in the backup quarterback.

The report doesn't say what else was given up by the Texans in the trade. The team did release Case Keenum Sunday afternoon.

Cant believe they even considered him as their #1.

Wonder why this trade is happening now and not before the draft?

I believe this is his contract year.

With that move, O'Brien cements himself as a another Patriots fraud. Trading for a trash New England backup QB. Sure worked out great for the fans of Kevin O'Connell and Matt Cassel.

Please tell me they gave up a 2nd rounder for him

Conditional 7th that can become a 6th for a guy who's familiar with O'Brien's system.

Belicheck held onto him too long.

If bill couldn't make him starter material it's not happening in Houston.

Yeah, feels like he should have pulled the trigger before the draft and gotten a higher pick out of the deal.

Who said they would get more at that point?

Should have drafted Bortles.

Should have drafted Bortles.

A guy like him really brings the hit and miss nature of the draft into focus, the scouting reports on him were a mixed bag all around.

I'm convinced the owner of the Texans never watched one Chiefs game under the Patriot Way. It's unbelievable you could watch that and then do the exact same thing with your billion dollar franchise. LMAO

No way. Watt + Clowney could be lethal.

That appears to be the case... Rumors around draft time were the Pats wanted a 2nd or 3rd. Texans were believed to be willing to give up a 5th or 6th... Ted Johnson, a former Patriot player now sports jock on 610am, said his sources told him that. Take it for what its worth...

If Clowney works out in the NFL, it will have been a perfectly fine pick. That was the gamble.

People used to say the same thing about Mario Williams and... who was it, Vince Young?

I think he was rumored to be going for a bit higher than a conditional 7th, but probably not anything higher than a 5th. Still, kind of strange for a trade to happen almost 4 months after everybody thought it would happen.

I remember it being between Mario Williams and Reggie Bush for the #1 overall that year. The Texans got hammered in the media for taking Williams over Bush.

So the Patriots are pretty much saying that Jimmy Garropolo is good enough to be Tom Brady's primary backup. A rookie.

WHAT? YOU MEAN THEY'RE GOING TO TRUST THAT JOB TO A ROOKIE AND NOT AN EXPERIENCED PRACTICE SQUAD PRESEASON VETERAN LIKE CHASE DANIEL! OH THE HUGE MANATEE!

A ROOKIE AS YOUR BACKUP? ARE YOU INSANE, BILL?

Mallet sucks. Big arm and tall but I watched all his games in college and he chokes under pressure. He choked more than once.

Yep. I think the Texans made the right pick back then too when they drafted Mario Williams over Reggie Bush and VY.
