Maybe, but I have a hard time blaming Yost for the offense not hitting. I hated his moves at the end of the game on Saturday, but if this offense is even average they sweep the Tribe.

I still care but have accepted the inevitable. Even if the Royals make the playoffs, they will be swept, losing all 3 games 1-0.

It would almost be better to fall into the wild card game and just have to lose one game 1-0. Less excruciating.

July 2005 called, they want their pessimism back

Wow. Yeah this weekend was pretty annoying, but this depth of depression after a week in a 162-game season is really kind of absurd.

Rangers: September versus contenders
The Rangers' three-game series with the Royals opens a month in which all but three games are against contending teams. After leaving Kansas City, the Rangers return home for 10 games against the Mariners, Angels and Braves.

Their final road trip is six games against the Athletics and Angels. The final homestand includes three against the Astros and then four against the Athletics.

"It gives you a better read on the young players," manager Ron Washington said. "You're facing better pitching and better opponents. You're facing top-notch pitching every night. We'll see who can handle that."

Washington said the word "spoiler" doesn't mean anything.

"I want to win," Washington said. "I want to win against everybody. I want to beat them all. That's the way we go about it."

Royals: Willingham likely due back
Josh Willingham, a designated hitter and bat off the bench, is expected to be available for pinch-hitting duty on Monday night.

Willingham wasn't available to pinch-hit in Saturday night's 11-inning loss because of a sore back, and he also sat out Sunday night's game against the Indians.

"It's crazy, it's a lot like Ventura's. It's in the same spot as Ventura's -- it's mid-back," Yost said.

"We're shooting to have him available to pinch-hit [Monday] and be ready to DH against Texas on the day they throw a lefty."

Lefty Derek Holland is the Rangers' probable pitcher for Tuesday night.

Worth noting
• Left-handers are batting .343 off Lewis this season.

• Ventura's 125 strikeouts are the most by a Royals rookie since Kevin Appier's 127 in 1990, and his current streak of six quality starts is the most since Appier's eight straight in that same season.

• The Royals have won five of their last eight games against the Rangers. But Texas is 18-11 at Kauffman Stadium since 2005.

• The Royals' 19-10 record in August matched the Nationals and Angels for the month's best in the Majors.

Honestly, I guess I'd like the two teams to split while we sweep Texas. I'll just go back to the adage that as long as we win, something good will happen elsewhere.

I like the idea of giving Carlos Peguero a shot. He's been raking in Omaha, with 30 home runs in 104 games. You just never know. He might come up here and give the team a lift.

He also may not do anything at all, but they way this team is hitting, it's a gamble worth taking. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

I understand Willingham is hurt but I don't see how, when healthy, they can keep his bat out of this lineup. He should probably be the starting RF'er...

I think you and I have defended him more than most on this site. But his true colors are showing late in a season. He's still managing like it's April or May with giving turds way too many at bats and the 1 inning limit on relievers no matter the scenario isn't the best way to get it done. I hope the pitching changes once the roster expands, though. I don't see the lineup for hitters changing much but Ibanez should not be getting anything more than an occasional PH at bat the rest of the year.

I generally defend managers to the end but I can't with Ned. I hate the fact he's turned me into a whiny Cardinals fan regarding his managing the past few weeks.

I used to have a diehard roommate who was a Cardinals fan who just bitched, and bitched, and bitched every fucking game and I sat there and would watch and would be thinking, "dude, your manager is Tony fucking LaRussa..."

Well...now I'm a whiny little bitch watching the Royals but at least our manager isn't Tony fucking LaRussa...and at least I can be like "well the last time he found himself in a pennant race he was so atrocious he got himself fucking fired and his team went on to make the playoffs after going on a tear after he was removed."

I mean, fuck.

alnorth

If we lose, it probably won't be because of Yost putting in Ibanez, but there's a small chance it could be. To me, its like Ned took a 59% chance of winning, and turned it into a 56% chance of winning. We're still favored, but giving away a few points of probability for no good reason.

I'll give Billy an A for his time at first considering how much of a liability he is out there...but thank God we got Hosmer back...he'll make a lot of plays Billy just flat out can't make that won't even show up on the stat page. A few of those throws that got past Billy the last month would be routine plays for Hosmer IMO
