View Full Version : Chiefs Chiefs sign S Kurt Coleman

Chiefs signed S Kurt Coleman.

Coleman was part of the Vikings' final cuts after inking a one-year deal with Minnesota in March. He was drafted by coach Andy Reid in Philadelphia and will be Kansas City's No. 4 safety. Coleman will mainly cover kicks for the Chiefs.

When he came out of Ohio State, I always thought he was a tweener.

Too small to be a SS, too slow to be a FS. But a solid fundamentals tackler with good intensity on the field.

Reid drafted him low and turned him into an okay starter.

In my mock drafts a year ago, I would often project him as a cheap pickup for the Chiefs.

Basically, he's the Quinten Demps of this year.

Former starting Eagles safety that will come in and play in nickel and dime packages.

Coleman isn't the returning dynamo Demps was, but he's much more solid in coverage and he's not the embarrassingly bad tackler Demps was.

Soooooooo....5 safeties or McCray gets cut?

Huh.

Good question. I hadn't done the math on that.

CBs: Smith, Cooper, Owens, Gaines, Parker
Ss: Berry, Abdullah, Coleman, Sorenson, McCray

Is there a safety I'm leaving out, or something?

Teams typically keep 10 DBs. They're special teams gold, and depth there is more important than ever.

Teams usually keep 4 RBs, too, do they not?

3 QBs
5 RBs (including 1 FB)
5 WRs
3 TEs
9 OL

In a 3-4....

7 DL
9 LB
10 DB

3 ST

That's 54. So somewhere in there, the least impressive special teamer gets cut.

Well Week 1 should pinpoint which WR is going to get cut when Bowe gets back from his suspension. My guess would be Jenkins. Hammond Jr or Wilson won't make it to the PS if we release them.

I say cut McKnight. If we lose a RB to injury...just bring West up from the PS.

He probably signed at a minimum contract, he's better than our safeties on the bubble of this roster, and he's not here to be a long-term fix. He's very good at special teams and I bet will be an upgrade over Demps since he can play both safety and corner, which gives them versatility in nickel and dime. It's a good signing even if the point is to have a veteran who should hopefully be replaced by a draft pick one day. We should be making more of these < $1M value moves than overpaying $3M for guys like Chase Daniel.

I think it matters a lot less when the point is to stopgap, not to find a long-term replacement. I think Coleman will do fine in a Demps type role and he's excellent on special teams. When I remember him with the Eagles, he wasn't good but he wasn't close to Kendrick Lewis bad. Who knows, maybe in a defense like KC where free safety speed is a lot less important, he could end up doing okay.

I saw Coleman play a few games. He's bad, but I don't think any Eagles fan knows exactly how bad "Kendrick Lewis bad" is. Keep in mind that Demps was cut in favor of Coleman.

This costs us nothing. If this is a long-term fix, then shit. But I doubt that it is. This is not a bad role for him because Coleman can play corner and Philly even considered moving him back there. You put him in a Demps role and you're not asking him to play center field as much and his versatility to play corner might actually help us. And because the Ryan defense often has less speedy free safeties back there that might help Coleman out too.

If the Chiefs hit on the Ford pick and the Gaines pick, they'll save about $18M on two players who are on a very short leash as is (Hali, Sean Smith). DAT looks like he'll provide a good receiving weapon. And I know you have no problem with the Murray choice.

You can argue the quality of the picks if you want. I'm iffy on the Ford pick even though I'm ecstatic we chose positional value over "safe." But really, we're going to pigeonhole the Chiefs into saying it was WR or safety in the first round or bust? This team has a million gaping holes on the roster, not just 2. If Ford does end up working out, I'll be more than happy that we took an OLB over a safety.

If Ford, Gaines, or DAT pan out, I don't know how anyone could have an issue with where they were slotted. They're high positional value players. And we don't need to be overpaying Hali as a 32-33 year old going into his last contract.

Next year, we'll have 11 picks. If Gaines and Ford can start by next year, we'll save $18M if we can gut Hali and Sean Smith's contracts. There are a LOT of corners, WRs, safeties, and ILBs you can get with that haul.

If DAT pans out, there shouldn't be a damn person who argues about the slotting of the pick. Playmakers earn positional value. If he spreads out wide (which I imagine he'll do more and more as he learns the WR position) that earns positional value too.
