Ten Things about Today's Game

10. When we last left Andy and the boys, they had just kicked Chiefs fans nut sacks deep into their collective body cavity, blowing a 28 point halftime lead on the road in Indy. Back in January, after managing to drag myself up off the floor and spit out a little blood, I watched all off season as the Chiefs went about "fixing things." Fixing things meant revamping one of the worst defensive secondaries in football. Instead, GM John Dorsey cut Brandon Flowers loose, who now starts for a division rival. "Fixing things" meant solidifying a shaky offensive line. Instead, GM John Dorsey cut Brandon Albert loose -making me think he's got something about guys named Brandon, and let Geoff Schwartz walk. Both of those players now start for other NFL teams. Conversely, no free agents of note are signed to cover either of those holes. So I though, "We'll fix it in the draft." Draft day comes, and instead of spending our first pick on a corner, or a safety, or another impact wide out, or (God Forbid) even another tackle, we spent our first pick on a linebacker, one who won't even see the starting lineup. Then we draft a project corner. How about wide receiver? Dorsey brings in a junior high school kid out of the CFL who doesn't even make the first pre season cut. Offensive line? Move a questionable right tackle to left tackle, put an injury prone guard at right tackle and pray. Special teams? Let McCluster walk, draft a diminuative injury prone speedster who can't make it on the field opening day, and cut a veteran kicker for a Brazilian midget to save a couple million bucks. Sleep walk through the pre-season. Score no offensive touchdowns with the first string offense. Tell everyone pre-season doesn't matter, and we'll be ready for opening day. Well boys and girls, opening day has come and gone. And after this gutless effort, we could be staring at an 0-6 season opening scenario. More on that later.

9. The Chiefs front office wanks have been busy beavers in the off season. We have a new pre-game parking policy -counter clockwise-, and new tailgate restrictions. We even have an official beer of Arrowhead Stadium. Mrs. Blowfish and I left our lovely Independence estate at 10am, and headed in with my good pals Gary and Vader. Took about 30 minutes to get into the parking lot once turning into the Stadium Drive entrance off US 40 highway. That hasn't improved much from last year. I took my camera along today, so I'll share some pics with you. Usually I get into Lot G, but today the Parking Gestapo put us into lot "F". "F" for "Failure" as the day turned out. Here's the tailgating view from Lot F:
http://i59.tinypic.com/2qt98qp.jpg
Getting into the stadium itself has been improved. They have more security people with magic metal detector wands now, and once you get frisked, the ticket takers are right where you walk into the round circular walkway things. It took about 15 minutes to get from where I was here at Gate F Hmmm....Lot F? Gate F? More pending Failure?
http://i62.tinypic.com/52yuxl.jpg

8. Once in the stadium, it was Opening Day pomp and circumstance. Smoke, Fire, Noise, Hoopla. I took this picture of Derrick Johnson on the score board, which unfortunately may be the only time we see him in uniform this entire season:
http://i57.tinypic.com/xegd9f.jpg
Then they release the balloons, as is tradition for all Chiefs Opening Day Pre-games since I can remember:
http://i61.tinypic.com/eupw7d.jpg
National Anthem sung by some pudgy Irish opera guy:
http://i61.tinypic.com/oay82o.jpg
And away we go.

7. The Chiefs actually showed up and played one good quarter of football. The first quarter. Defense looked pretty sharp. Neither team could do much on offense. Chiefs offense looked very Matt Cassel-esque. Lot's of duke of dink stuff. And one disturbing trend was a serious lack of Charles. Surely they would get Charles involved? He was over 50% of the teams entire offensive output last year. Surely they'll get him the football. A lot. Right? Well, turns out not so much. Charles ended up today with 19 yards rushing and 15 yards receiving. That's not gonna cut it. Not with Bowe out. Chiefs only had 17 rushing attempts all day. 17....rushing attempts. And Charles wasn't even the leading rusher. Alex Smith was, and only because he was running for his life all day long. Smith had 36 yards, and was sacked four times. But at least at the end of the first quarter it was 0-0.

6. Second quarter, The Brazilian midget doinked in his first field goal attempt from 35 yards. It was a bank shot, but it went through. Later in the second quarter, he doinked the other upright, this time from 48 yards, and this time it rebounds straight back onto the playing field. So, the midget rookie kicker misses, and the momentum worm turns. Titans drive down for a TD and take the lead. Then with two minutes left in the half, DJ blows out his Achilles. They bring the John Deere Gator out on the field, and you could feel the whole Chiefs sideline do a collective "Oh Shit." Then, Andy tries a desperation pass inside of two minutes to half to move the Chiefs down field, ball gets picked, and Succop nails a 36 yarder to put the Titans up 10-3 at halftime. Stupid turnover, should have been 7-3 at the half, but that was only the first dumb three Andy gave up today. Players go into halftime to a chorus of boos and most have their head down as they go into the locker room.

5. Third Quarter: Instead of trying to seize back the momentum, Chiefs give up a painful, time consuming Titans drive. First play from scrimmage, Owens and Berry get roasted on a 40-yard pass play. Two minutes into the half, DeVito blows out his Achilles. Now the Gator has amassed more total yardage than Charles. Shawn Smith gets beat to the pylon for an easy TD, and now KC is down by two TDs. Allen, who is supposed to be our stop gap right tackle, has an issue with an elbow, and pulls himself out of the game. Charles goes nowhere. Alex starts running for his life again. Then with about six minutes left in the third, Alex chucks up his second pick, another desperation heave that is woefully under thrown at Donnie Avery. Avery has a step on the cover man, has to wait on the ball, and it gets picked. That was essentially the end of the Chiefs threat to be part of the game. Succop gets another gimme 30 yard field goal, and Titans head into the fourth quarter with a three possession lead. In the fourth quarter, the Chiefs fall into a mish mash of quit and stupidity. Sorenson -or Donny Osmond as I'll call him this year- does his part by jumping offsides on a Titan punt, which puts Succop back in field goal range to hit his third field goal of the day and stretch the unanswered points parade to 23 points. Then an idiotic Bernard Pollard and his Titan defensive back buddies give up a couple of stupid penalties that lead to KC's only TD of the day (a garbage time score). Succop bangs another 47 yarder for good measure to go 4-4 on the day. Alex puts the final touch on this crap fest by throwing his third pick of the day to wind things up. Not really his fault, he hit Avery between the 1 and the 7 and he couldn't hold the football. Stadium empties, game over. So, what do we take from all this?

4. The injuries are going to be the worst thing about today. Not only do we lose DJ and DeVito most likely for the entire season, but Allen pulled himself out of the game, which killed any run blocking or pass protection, and Tamba Hali was gimping around on the sideline on a taped up ankle as well. Add that to no Mays, and our defense looks gutted in the middle. Knile Davis was useless on kickoff returns. We had no special teams game today at all. Hopefully when DAT returns, we'll have something that scares people. Chiefs had only 15 first downs all day, and were 1-12 on third down efficiency. That's also very Matt Cassel-like. Chiefs were out-rushed, out-passed, gave up over 400 yards of total offense, didn't force a single turnover, and lost time of possession by an entire quarter -15 minutes. That my friends, is what you call a recipe for disaster.

3. It seemed to me like the entire team was lethargic. I don't know if the starters didn't get enough work in pre-season, or if the entire team was just flat after a stalemate first quarter. Berry hardly played in the pre-season. He looked gassed at the end of the day. So did Poe. So did Shawn Smith. So did Charles. So did the entire offensive line. And it wasn't that hot today. Not for a home opener. There's been home opening games in the mid 90's many years. Today the weather was perfect. The injuries may also be a sign of poor off-season training. I don't think these guys are in game shape. We get Bowe back next week, but this offense needs Charles back, not Bowe. Without Charles, this team goes nowhere fast.

2. Andy Reid was out coached. That desperation heave before half ended up costing KC big. It would have been much better kicking off the second half down 7-3 then down 10-3. Reid tried a fake punt, another desperation move. All the media wanks said earlier in the week that Reid's smarts and play calling will over come the depletion of talent on offense. Guess what? The players, not the plays, decide the game. Doesn't matter what plays you call. If you ain't got the talent, you ain't gonna win. I think we could be seriously looking at a 0-6 start, and that's no exaggeration. And since we just gave Smith $45 million, I guess we can all start scoping out which tackle we're going to take with the first pick in the 2015 NFL draft. OK, maybe that's an over-reach of pessimism at this juncture. But we've had more injury bad luck in ONE GAME so far that we had all last season. Between the injuries and the suspensions, it's not good. I'll be shocked and amazed if Alex Smith lives through September. We could be in for a year full of the Chase Daniel Show. You thought today was bad? Shudder to think.

1. Wish we had a happier day to talk about. I'm not completely ready to throw in the towel, but when you look at the September schedule, and you look at today's game, you say "Yep, we should win that one." Nope. Chiefs always have this strange habit of blowing one every year, and then winning one where you think they have no chance. New England stumbled out of the gate today, so maybe we'll sack up and beat them on MNF. I cringe to think what The Forehead is going to do to this secondary next week in Denver. I think it could be one of those double-bagger butt ugly games.

While parking does seem to be a little better, big crowd today so that always kind of screws things, what they need to do is make certain gates available for parking pass holders only and other gates for the cash lots only. It would sure help speed the process up IMO.

I don't fault Andy Reid for the aggression with the pass from the 2. Everyone on the planet expected a couple of handoffs and halftime. That was a chance to catch the Titans off guard and get a big play, it simply wasn't executed. If that play works, nobody here jumps up and down and screams about us not just running out the clock.

I don't fault him for the aggression on fourth down, however Ive always felt if you were going to go for it on fourth, just keep the offense out there. Cyrus Gray running headlong into a pile of people 3 yards ahead of him is just not a great plan to get a 4th down conversion.

I DO however fault Andy Reid for the absolutely inexcusable lack of touches for Jamaal Charles. He's our best player, and he only touched the football five times in the first half. It seems crazy to accuse a coach of trying to lose the game, but come on. Five touches for Charles, and what happened every time Travis Kelce made a play?

He went IMMEDIATELY out of the game. WTF? He comes in, makes a huge grab, and then we sub him out so we can get those all pro gas pumping stud wrs back into the game. This game should've been 2 tight end sets all effing game with huge doses of Jamaal Charles and passing game on the strength of play action passes.

Andy Reid and Doug Pederson should seriously be ashamed of that offensive gameplan they put forward today. That would not have been able to defeat many teams at the collegiate level, let alone the NFL.

Defensively, there's not much we can do. We were already down Marcus Cooper and Joe Mays, and now losing Johnson and DeVito for the season we are going to be seriously looking at a defense that is going to resemble the Greg Robinson days, only we aren't going to have the Vermiel/Saunders firepower to overcome it.

Losing DJ makes me really not even want to watch the Chiefs this year. He's one of my absolute favorites to watch all game, and with him gone we are going to be completely exposed in the middle of the defense. Something needs to happen with either a signing, or moving Houston inside and throwing Dee Ford into the fire to see what he's got. Having our first round pick sitting on the sidelines all game is just a complete waste. Hali and Houston have to be carried off the field before they will leave it, so if we're waiting on a substitution for Ford to see the field, he may as well not even suit up.

Love your take besides the first sentence... you DO NOT take that chance from the two nearing the half, not with Donnie ****ing Avery and his COMPLETE INABILITY to outmuscle someone for a pass.

1. The entire team looked like they got drunk at a dildo party last night. Billy bob probably asked miss Davis to prom about 6am.
2. This defense should be named after a midlevel porn star because they didn't put up a fight while the titans took turns ramming it to them ..... But they were paid well.
3. The offensive line looks softer than an old banana that has
Been stepped on by a fat man.
4. The WRs short of Bowe wouldn't see the field on 90% of the teams in the league. Good job addressing that this offseason. No one saw that need.
5. The secondary is easier to score on than a meth mom at a biker rally with past due rent.
6. Berry looks fat amd slow and out of shape.
7. Losing dj is going to be more painful than a second camping trip with jerry Sandusky.
8. Alex smith was a dumpster fire today. Here did not earn his money in week 1..
9. Why they insisted on throwing to to Avery and not getting #25the ball is a head scratcher.
10. I hate the Denver broncos. I would like to lob Ebola corpses into their locker room with a trebuchet They will probably score 60 points on the chiefs next week.

In short I think my bad girlfriend has moved on to crack rocks lately. Unforgivable how that ratchets bitch is acting.

I have to agree with everything here.

And make no mistake George, this game was lost as much by coaching, and playcalling, as the talent, or lack thereof, on the field.

As Wallcrawler says here, 5 touches in the first half for the only sure weapon you have in this offense is inexcusable, and terribly ****ing moronic.

If your gameplan doesn't involve running the offense through Charles every game, regardless of opponent, you need to be fired.

Its real simple. This team did nothing to address the players positions that they let walk. We needed skill players and got nothing. Needed OL and got nothing. We needed DB's and got one and he doesn't even start just like Ford. I realize Dorsey is capped strapped but he fucked up in the draft bad.

When combined with the playoff game earlier this year, today should have broken the back of the franchise.

The majority of Chiefs' games will likely be blacked out next season and the one after. There's nothing at all that suggests the team will improve in the next 12 to 24 months.

Hope last season was worth it for the Hunt family.. Arrowhead is primed to return to it's John Mackovic glory days for the rest of the decade.

There are a few names, and we know who they are, who called for a step back with reasonable questions.

Then there are those who called for a step back based on, basically, hoping this team fails to further their own ego... and thats the rub for most people, people claiming to be big fans yet they rush to laugh at and scorn any team failure.

Even some of the most cynical guys wouldnt have claimed to see this opening day meltdown happening, same as many of us positive minded folk... but since they win this round its easy to want to try and piss back in their Cheerios.

George, how was it getting out of the stadium from lot F? We're also from Independence and usually tailgate in F(and is typically easy to exit from there). Today, we got directed to lot C and then when we left tried to do our normal return via Raytown Rd, only to be steered down Eastern towards Eastwood Trafficway. Not good. If F was easy to get out we may be returning.

Because of the counter clockwise pattern, if you follow traffic out, you end up being jettisoned out on the south side, and would have to take Raytown Road up to Blue Ridge Cutoff, then have to work your way back to the North.

I have a 4-wheel drive Jeep, so I hopped the curb over to Lot G, and cut out the back to Stadium Drive, the same way I came in. If you can't hop the curb, you pretty much have to go the way the Parking Gestapo send you.

It was coming a mile away.

Why didn't we act on this? Was it money? or was it just giving up hopes since we have no shot against DEN and SD?

That's what kills me, we'll never know. The Chiefs fancy themselves secret agents of sorts. The problem is the never save the king, queen, or kingdom.

I still content that great players, or not enough of them (who arent just retreads), dont want to come to this team. And those players who do end up here know the history and prolly just quit before they start.

I totally did.

When you let all the 'homegrown' talent your franchise drafted and developed walk, and don't replace them through the Draft or FA...This is what happens.

When O-line and secondary are areas of concern, and you let the only Pro Bowl O-lineman and only Pro Bowl CB on your roster walk, this is what happens.

When your only viable WR is a bonehead and gets caught partying in Riverside (!!!???) at 2AM smoking blunts by the cops and gets suspended...and isn't really that great anyway, and the rest of the WR corps might not make the NO practice squad, AND you don't address the issue...This is what happens.

When you have ONE ILB on the roster...and he goes down with a season ending injury...This is what happens.

All of which makes abandoning the running game with 12 minutes left in the 2nd quarter a pretty fucking stupid game-plan.

45 called passes vs. 11 runs.

Andy Reid ladies and gentlemen. KC is poor in all of those areas (worst in the NFL or not, they're indisputably bad at those spots) yet we run with the type of gameplan that requires them to be a strength.

Typical Andy Reid.

We actually have 3 really good runners in Charles, Davis, and Gray...and yesterday, we didn't have 1 decent WR to throw to...and we were on our 3rd string O-line.

So...Reid calls a gameplan that calls for a 4 to 1 pass to run ratio.

Can't run block.. can't get out properly and block on screens.. (first 2 drives)

3rd drive.. minimal run blocks.. Alex runs for nice yardage.. throws an 18 yarder to Avery... throws a nice 20 yard crosser to Hammond... 4 yd gain to Avery...

end of 1st.

Not the worst in Q1... players do look rather lethargic. Just no real excitement out there.

Q2

penalty from Avery forces a 3rd and 8.. Alex looks for Hammond on the right, but he isn't where Smith expects.. so Smith takes off and gets taken down for 4th down.

D forces another punt. 3-0 lead... all is underwhelming, but still not looking like the truly awful day it would become.

great effort from JC to get 6... great out throw to Kelce for big yds... loss of two, as JC gets converged on after short pass... batted pass thanks to a soft Fulton... 3rd and 12.. and Kelce gets the OPI, LOL!!!!! missed FG...

and from this point, EVERYTHING went to shit, as I recall.

The difference between Berry's injury vs. Buffalo, and DJ's injury was, DJ's was just a freak thing. Nobody touched him. He was in pass coverage, standing next to the ref, and just went down like he'd been shot.

That little cheap shotting Bitch Stevie Johnson blind sided Berry with a chop block. I'm hoping somebody knocks him out every time I see him step on an NFL field.

The bad thing for DJ is, depending on the severity of the injury, his future as a football player. At best, he'll be a step or two slower. At worst, his career is over. And he's just 19 tackles away from the All Time Chiefs career record for tackles held by Gary Spani. So close...

Excellent write up!!

If anything the Chiefs are predictable. First drive in the red zone-you just knew they would have a penalty pushing them back- (illegal formation) and then get sacked-kick field goal.

The play calling is VANILLA. The blandest flavor. Any high school D- could see what is coming. No misdirection, no shifting, no hard count to draw them off sides, nothing but the same stale offense we have seen time and time again. Titans broke the code by the second quarter it is That easy. Rush only 4- that is more than enough pressure against this swiss cheese line-and drop the rest to wait for a floating duck by Alex. Easy and predictable.

All teams have to do is Blitz on 3rd down- and they will shut the chiefs down. Alex seems shocked every time he is blitzed. It is like they have no clue it is coming, or how to change the play at the line, or block it- just fall down and take the loss or throw it out of bounds. That was some of the worst third down play I think I have seen in many years.

Kelce had a couple of nice catches-he looks like the real deal-even Falsano made a TD - but passing to them seemed like an after thought- as all plays were directed to the greatest WR in Chiefs history- Avery. That dink off his chest was classic.

I would have bet a million bucks we would lose this game-knew it like I know winter is coming. I have seen this replayed so many times with this team it is like a bad dream. All I could do is sit and laugh at this pathetic "football" team. I mean it was funny watching them get their asses handed to them by a kicker they cut to save some money.

I felt bad for all the loyal fans at Arrowhead. They deserve more than this shit fest with Zero leadership and some of the worst talent every trotted out on the field since the dark ages- 70's and 80's. So many years that was me out there. It starts with Hope, you get pumped up with all the fireworks and crowd noise, then slowly lose faith as the chiefs bumble and stumble their way to an embarrassing loss. Then the buyers remorse sets in (I can't believe I just paid so much $ to see that) as you leave the stadium. All I could think as I watched for free from a comfy couch-I am glad it is not me out there.

Yes, exactly. I agree 100%. Reid may possibly be a great head coach...but he can't call the plays in order for that to be possible.

He is an abysmal playcaller, and all other attributes he may bring to a franchise pale in comparison to that fact.

3rd and 12.. and Kelce gets the OPI, LOL!!!!! missed FG...

and from this point, EVERYTHING went to shit, as I recall.and alex was perfect.

I'll stand behind Alex Smiff until he gets so shell shocked that he goes into Fetal Cassel mode. He'll either go Fetal Cassel, or he'll get killed scrambling, or get crunched on a jail break sack. Either way, I give him about a one out of three chance of getting through the season uninjured.

Andy Reid will throw the ball every time. Get used to the misuse of Charles.

Also I talked about this before the season at length.,

Brandon Albert and Asamoah were the best run blockers on the roster. Albert imo was the best run blocking tackle in the league with his speed to get to the second level.

The offseason seemed like such a simple task after that loss at Indy. #1 was bolster our secondary. Instead we regressed. Get better at WR. We did nothing but replace McCluster with a probable better guy in DAT. And either sign the O-linemen we were about to lose or have a plan to replace them. We regressed big time. We drafted a OLB in the first round, who I can only assume is there to replace Hali next year just like we drafted Fisher to replace Albert after one season. I guess we TRIED to sign Emmanuel Sanders but aside from that we didn't do jack shit.

Yeah people were complaining a lot last year that Alex just doesn't like to take chances. He likes either a metric shit ton of seperation or else it's more often than not going to be a checkdown or tuck & run. That's just what he does. He's not a guy who is going to fit a pass into a tight window. It's a rare occurence when it happens. So yeah...your last sentence basically.

After the traditional Chiefs playoff game loss in January and then the typical abortion of an off-season that followed I chose to not re-up my Sunday Ticket. I will be reading your "10 Things" every week just to see how bad the failure of this team is going to be.

It is obvious that the goal of the administration is just "butts in the seats". Do just enough to make a shit ton of money, that's all they care about. What GM or HC looks at this team and thinks that they are doing the right thing? TBH they should all be laughed out of the NFL.

Funny how the best QBs in the game never have problems with WR separation, regardless of the team they're on.

Or the caliber of the WR corp. Like the way Peyton makes any of his receivers look good.

Denvers WR corp is 10000 times better than the dumpster fire we roll out....

Bowe wouldn't even be his #1 WR.

Well, I remember Al Smith hitting a well-covered Avery between the 1 and the 7...and the ball went up into the air, and then was intercepted.

Avery had a step on his man but he had to slow down to wait for a under thrown ball to the wrong shoulder (behind him). That's the reason for the interception. Bowe MIGHT have wrestled it away but it was a terrible pass.

Bowe MIGHT of dropped it as well.

Guess we will never know either...

Being in his system... the same he's had since Christ was born... yeah.. wonder if that helps.

Didn't the Broncos draft WR Latimer at pick #56? why would they bother, when they have the Great Forehead? And they do have some guy named Demaryius Thomas that they are trying to sign for big bucks... and then some guy named Emmanuel Sanders that they pursued and signed in FA... Let us not forget that Welker is far more useful than any receiver on the Chiefs roster... and they have some scrub TE named Julius Thomas that Fasano remarkable skill scoffs at.

**** you for being such a brain-dead anus. :thumb:

Let's not get crazy with the Manning poverty case.

In Indy he always had Harrison and then Wayne.

And then Dallas Clark as a receiving TE.

He demands execution and being at a specific spot at the right time.

Anthony Gonzalez was a 1st round pick. OK measures but very quick and that's how you get open in short space.

Remember Brandon Stokley? Great slot type WR.

Austin Collie. Mediocre speed. No top gear to pull away. But a solid 200lbs, good quickness, sharp routes, nice hands, savvy, lots of experience. Perfect for Manning.

Well that's the part we can't be sure about with the kind of people the Chiefs bring in to QB and WR for this team, they want it, but if they demand it, it sure doesn't show.

Maybe the $26M man will step up and getting in the face of some of these under-performers. Then they can reply with, "well if you can manage to throw it to my correct shoulder, sure."
