My wife and I had our 20th anniversary a couple of weeks ago and decided to take a long weekend to celebrate. Someone mentioned Eureka Springs as a nice getaway and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on places to go or things to do.

I figured some of the people in SWMO have spent some time there.

I just helped one of my clients do a documentary about Eureka Springs. Yes, it's a very nice place. So is Hot Springs further south.

Yeah, it's ok. Not much to do out there, but it's pretty nice.

If your staying in a hotel, stay at the Basin or the Cresent Hotel. There are also a lot of private cabins to stay at. Ermilio's is a great place to eat.

I was looking at both of those hotels as well as the Palace. Any thoughts on that one?

Hot Springs is very nice, and very affordable. Bob Dole spends 4-5 weekends there every year.

stay here in the hidden oak or hideaway especially.

Emiliano's restaurant for Italian.
Gaskins Cabin for prime rib

The Crescent is neat to see, but not great for eating or staying IMHO. the ghost tour is kind of fun if you're into that.

thorncrown chapel is cool, even if you're not religious.

Mud Street has good breakfast.

you're going at a tough time as many things close in the low season.

Okay. I live in Fayetteville, have tons of friends in Eureka, got married there, and spend quite a few weekends there for getaways with the wife. I'll answer any questions you have to the best of my ability.

All of those places are awesome. Just be aware: you're paying for ambiance not amenities. They're all extremely old buildings with small rooms. If you want to be walkable to bars, restaurants, and nightlife, stay at the Palace or Basin Park. If you want to have a strange experience of being in a different world atop the town, then stay at the Crescent. There are also a TON of high quality small rentals and B&Bs in the area.

Go to Thorn Crown Chapel and check it out. My wife and I got married there. Trent Green has officially set foot in that building (as well as a ton of other ones in Eureka).

Mud Street is great for breakfast. Sparky's is fun if you want a road house atmosphere. Local Flavor is excellent. New Delhi gets a lot of hype, but I haven't been as of yet. Chelsea's is the place for local flavored night life if you want to go out drinking and see how the natives live in Eureka.

Ermilio's (someone misspelled the hell out of it earlier in the thread) is the absolute destination for a cool, quality romantic dinner. Bonus: if you choose to stay at the Crescent, it's actually within walking distance of it because it's up atop the loop, not down in the main town.

Lake Leatherwood is a very pretty place to take a hike and check out. Blue Springs Heritage Center is also gorgeous. If you like to trout fish, Beaver Lake Tailwaters is really close.

Anyway, there is a ton of stuff to see and do in the area. I'll check in and answer any questions you have. Enjoy the heck out of it. It's a wonderful place.

Check out Turpentine Creek wild cate refuge. Spent a ton of time at the place when I was younger volunteering. They have Tigers, Lions, cougars, Bears etc etc. It's a great experience and cause.

Went for our 1st anny in 2007. Love Eureka Springs. We rented a cabin as opposed to a hotel and really enjoyed it. Gaskins Cabin is a must eat, IMHO

If you go to Emilio's be prepared to wait and make sure to get there before they open. There is often a group of people tailgating in the parking lot waiting for them to open.

No joke.

Spent 5 days there about 17 years ago. There used to be a big cat rescue somewhat close to it. That was the coolest thing we did there that I can remember. They had some little tiger cubs you could pet and play with. The old houses were cool to look at but I was ready to leave after day 2. Little too country for my taste. The good news is, I never got arrested while I was there, so there's always that!

I've been there and enjoyed it. It's a little off the beaten path though.

Also, we enjoyed the Pea Ridge Civil War battleground. It was a pretty important battle and was cool to visit.

Staying at the Crescent? Make sure your room has a shower. Ours only had a tub(?). Made washing your hair a pain. Also, if you drop something, kick it to the side of a building if possible and pick it up with your back to the wall.
