View Full Version : Misc Thrift Store Shopping: Economical or White Trash?

I used to turn my nose up at thrift stores. It was like a huge garage sale for some organization's profit. Used everything.

But then I started losing a lot of weight. It was pointless to pay full price for brand new clothes whenever I'd shrink out of them in about a month or two anyway. I decided to give thrift stores a chance.

I'm glad I did. You know, you may have to look a little longer, but you can really find some hidden gems!

What say you? Are you a thrift store shopper, or do you view yourself as being above it?

Thrift stores are good for certain things. I was actually at one yesterday. The only things i ever buy are books though. The only things worth buying from thrift stores are usually:

1. Books

2. Old NES/SNES video games

3. Sometimes certain kitchen things....like pot and pans. I've picked up some really nice Stainless steel Pots for just a few dollars.

It's not for me as I don't enjoy looking and shopping for stuff, but it's a smart idea

I hear you can get Valentino suits at them.

Only 'clothes' I think I've ever bought were some choice shoes

2 pair of Johnston and Murphy
1 Pair Polo
1 Pair Ferragamo

They were all stiff leather and in perfect shape, so it isn't worse hygeinically than wearing lightly worn bowling shoes.

all 4 pairs $75.

I make a pretty good living. I do, from time to time, stop in to thrift stores looking for camping stuff, camo shit, etc. I bought a pair of damn near new Arizona jeans for $2 a few years ago. Nothing wrong with being smart.

I am not but I've seen others get real gems. I just don't have the patience. I'll stick to sales at Macy's, Neiman Marcus and Dillards for now.

It all depends on the neighborhood. I live by Troost so mine are great for speakers and flannels.

Thrift is the only way for me. I am so unorganized that my best cloths end up going to work and getting funk ed up. So thrift is good.

There are some things I just won't buy. Shoes? Uh, no. Any sort of under garments or pajamas? Nope. I'm in the market for a new love seat or chair. Finding one for cheap that's worth anything will be iffy though.

We have a huge costume store nearby. Saves a lot of time. All my other hand made costumes are in the attic. I just recycle those.

I did find a loveseat to fit an odd shaped spot in one because everything in the stores were too big. I have to get it completely reupholstered though, which I am doing.

You were white trash or you weren't before you went in. The thrift store doesn't change that.

Still have a pair of red crushed velvet bell bottoms I bought at a thrift store in 1990. We used to have Freedom Friday parties in college where everyone would show up in their best 70's ensemble.

With bedbugs becoming a problem again I'd advise against buying used furniture unless you know where it came from. You don't want to bring that nightmare into your home.

Refurbishing along with disinfecting can handle that. I dunno if I'd ever bother with a mattress though.

No, I know bed bugs are impossible. I wasn't thinking of just them. I would think you can tell if a piece has bed bugs right there though.

Or more apt, I love my fiancé going thrift shopping, because then she spends less and gets more, and TBH all I care about is the bottom line.

Sometimes I'd go to find an older button-up - mostly because I used to wear a lot of retro. I still like a nice collar though.

I don't think there's a damned thing wrong with them - that being said - I doubt I'd purchase a hat or a pair of shoes at one.
