I'm so impressed by both the Orioles and Royals through the ALDS. The Orioles just tore the Tigers' hearts out of their body through their throats in Game 2, and have superb pitching/hitting.

And the Royals are hitting their stride at the perfect time. Hitting home runs in key moments is about the most improbable and awesome thing for them.

It should be a fun series! I can't believe the Royals are in the ALCS.

I had a friend text me last night and ask who he should root for in NL for the Royals to play in the World Series. He's not a baseball watcher and I think that's what even some baseball fans forget, that hot/cold play happens in the blink of an eye. We are red hot but that could change tomorrow and the O's could flip the switch, get the calls and have hits go their way. This series is far from over as baseball is all about streaks.

I'm supremely confident. This team kind of reminds me of the 2006 Cardinals. The exception being we don't play in a shitty division. That team scuffled through the season, but pitched so well in the post season and got timely hits from guys like David f.ing Eckstein to win it all.

The Royals are getting contributions from unlikely sources too (Sal, moose, Esky last night) and it looks to me like they are showing the O's to be crumbling under the pressure of being heavy media favorites and the weight of (unreal) fan expectation.

I understand that line of thinking, but I think it's wrong. Teams play 162 games in a season. This isn't football, where you are nervous going on a winning streak into the Playoffs, and your next loss is your exit. Teams lose games and bounce back quickly in Baseball. This is why I think Balt takes Game 3. We aren't going to sweep through the playoff's without a loss. I still think we win it at home. Lose Game 3 and take games 4 & 5. JMHO

I think the Royals win Game 3 behind Guthrie and then get bombed in Game 4 with Vargas on the hill (if the rotation holds up that way).

If it truly is rained out tonight, we could actually see Shields in Game 4 on normal rest and Ventura in Game 5 on normal rest.

He got a little bit lucky in that game (several well-hit balls that great plays were made upon), and Baltimore's lineup is a little bit better.

The Jones/Cruz/Pearce gauntlet is actually pretty daunting for LH pitchers. Those guys all murder LH pitching.

I would avoid pitching Vargy in game 4. I might let him go game 5, just to avoid having him pitch in Camden

Pitching Vargas in Game 4, assuming there is not a rainout tonight, allows you to go to Shields and Ventura on normal rest with a chance to close out the series.

If there's a rainout, the need to use Vargas vanishes.

Sure, anything can happen. Jason Vargas could morph into Lefty Grove tomorrow. That doesn't mean it's likely to happen, or smart to count on it happening.

And as Hootie has astutely pointed out, the Orioles have three big-time RH power hitters who murder lefties.

Adam Jones vs. lefties:
.344/.399/.604

Nelson Cruz vs. lefties:
.314/.407/.569

Steve Pearce vs. lefties:
.327/.405/.704

Those are All-Star/Hall of Fame type lines. The Royals have gotten through the middle of the O's lineup mostly by picking on Steve Pearce and avoiding Cruz and Jones as much as possible.

Can't do that with a lefty.

Prison Bitch
10-13-2014, 09:53 AM
Considering how low offensive #s were this season, those splits are pretty frightening.

Without Machado-Weiters-Davis, this lineup outside the 3 remaining guys is pretty toothless really. What have they done to us?

Hootie
10-13-2014, 12:44 PM
Exactly. If it were up to me, Vargas wouldn't pitch this series at all. And that's no slight on the guy. Adam Jones connected against Ace, we all saw that...but he's hall of fame GREAT against lefties and 2014 Billy Butler against righties.

I am ok with Vargas now, though...as my only stipulation with pouring gasoline onto a fire was making sure we at least have the series lead, and we will.

Hootie
10-13-2014, 12:46 PM
That said...I don't care if he's at 39 pitches...You cannot give those three more than 2 ABs against Vargas. I don't care if he's throwing a perfect game. He should have a 5 inning cap no matter what.

You know what. I appreciate the fact that he isn't on here complaining and justifying away their losses. Better to just not show up until after the series is over

What about in 3 or 4 years a Wil Myers in his prime could lead the Royals to the playoffs.

By the end of year Wil Myers will be fighting for Rookie of the year.

Has anyone figured out which whiny poster on the Orioles board he is?

I know we all miss his insight and twitter updates.

I think the reason they are being assholes about this is because more Royals fans have children now. Royals fans have more important things in their lives like wives and children to care for so we don't get as upset as those immature baby Orioles fans do. Dur.

It weird that so many of them were just making excuses for losing. Over here on CP we bash the fuck out of our own players and coaches for losing. Over there it was the other team was lucky mantra. That board was comedy gold. Great find!

Maybe we should take it easy on the guy? I'm sure he'd have been gracious had the O's won, and probably would've shown tremendous humility.
