150 lb women are going to break knees and cause concussions if they run straight at eachother full bore.

God, that would be so awesome to see.

Here I am, trying to bring up football topics to discuss that doesn't involve a quarterback named Smith or Andy Reid's coaching abilities, yet all you knuckledraggers want to do is paint me as the next Direckshun.

[Serious] ANBS: Would a weight limit make football safer?

Yes, limiting a player to an absolute weight or one correlated with height makes the game safer. 0 0%
No, the danger in football lies primarily with technique and speed rather than size. 2 100.00%
There's nothing that suggests weight limits would impact the sport one way or the other. 0 0%

^This is retarded.

Nightfyre

It depends on the weight limit.

But Football would be safer if people were lighter, provided increases in acceleration did not exceed the decrease in mass.

A 200 lb safety hitting a WR at full speed vs a 250 lb safety, I guess you're saying.
But you'd probably have to restrict the weight on the WRs, too. Plus they could probably run faster at a lower weight.
I don't know. I don't think it would make a difference

Eliminating by weight doesn't get to the core of the problem. You have to eliminate by kinetic energy, which is mass times velocity squared.

Would a weight limit make football safer?

The answer is probably yes.

But that doesn't mean it isn't a really stupid question. Playing on sand would also probably make it safer.

Note, I was merely commenting that the force exerted would be lower. Not that football should have weight limits. In fact, I think the fact that it is clearly understood that playing football is NOT SAFE by nature should protect the NFL from lawsuits. Give me the hard hitting NFL back, dammit.

But what about the force of two 280lb+ men colliding with each other 30-40 times every 7 days?

I think that's what Nightfyre is saying. Depends on the difference in speed.

The question I'm pondering is whether you limit kinetic energy (mV^2) or momentum (mV). I'm too far removed from my physics days to remember which one is the proper measure.

Which of these represents a similar scenario, and which represents an unequal scenario?

Hit by a 200-lb man traveling 16 mph versus getting hit by a 280-lb man traveling 11.4 mph (momentum)

or

Hit by a 200-lb man traveling 16 mph versus getting hit by a 280-lb man traveling 13.5 mph (kinetic energy)

Force? Now you're talking about mass times acceleration. I think it's more about momentum or kinetic energy. The more I think about it, the more I'm deciding that it's kinetic energy.

Beyond the physics, I'm of the opinion a weight limit might cut back on ligament and bone injuries that aren't a consequence of game or practice contact.

Unfortunately I posted in loochy's thread first (my apologies for my arrogance loochy). Discuss... C'Mon Man. This is stupid shit right here. Yes, you could theoretically create an approximate maximum force that a player could apply by restricting weight, but where do you draw the line? You'd also have to create a minimum weight to maintain an approximate balance. You're playing with physics in an attempt to control concussions. It would severely impact the game as we know it. Good luck with that shit.

The only thing that would remotely make this work is that we can pretty much say that a Human will not likely run any faster than about 8.92 m/s on most plays.
That's a 4.1 second 40 yard dash.

Absolute maximum is 10.44 m/s currently, that's Usain Bolt's World Record 100 m dash, and I don't forsee a football player having the chance to rip that off and also come into contact with another human.
