KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- As has been confirmed via high-level sources, the Royals swept the Orioles in the ALCS and will advance to the World Series. Regarding these baseball events, let's a give a look and a listen -- mostly a listen -- to Wednesday's final out of that ALCS from the Kauffman Stadium parking lot ...

Those are the strains of sports enthusiasm you hear. The hometown nine has just prevailed.

I can also attest that it was louder still within the confines of the ballpark. Nearly 30 years of holding it in will do that.

I didn't listen to the radio so here's Denny with the call:

He's got to be getting close. 70's at least.

It's a little different via YouTube. He still calls a great game. I've been listening to him for years now. Just a great announcer.

That was almost as bad as the Buck-Tyree call. He just sounds bored as hell

I think he's possibly the best ever. Great call of a game a mastery of neat little facts.

Not to me. He's excited and lets the crowd have the mic for a bit.

Knowing when to let the moment breath is something that a lot of sports announcers don't know how to do.

Absolutely. "Kansas City, You have a World Series".....nothing else NEEDED to be said. The crowd let you know all you needed to know.

If Holthus made the call, he'd be too busy assigning nicknames to everyone, and to the play, for anyone to be able to enjoy the sound of the fans.

Denny is class for sure. Love listening to games. Wouldn't want any other announcer for sure.

I dunno, I guess if I listened to it live, I'd be screaming like a little girl, so they could play a Viagra commercial and I wouldn't have noticed. And there's at least more excitement there than the bored-out-of-his-mind monotone nature of when they clinched a playoff spot, and I like how comfortable he is with being silent..... it's just strange that you can go through 29 years of broadcasting Royals games and then nothing more than "Welp, they're in the playoffs.... yep. They sure are..."

I know he's spoken about the "slippery slope" of getting too excited over every little thing, but maybe once every three decades?

On a scale of 1 - 10, with 1 being completely detached and 10 being an over-the-top ball-licking homer, Denny has always been about a 2.

I think good announcers are about a 6--some enthusiasm, with a little disappointment and criticism mixed in when appropriate.

Well in that case, you can fuck off and die you piece of shit.

I have always liked Denny's call of a game. The late Fred White put me to sleep. That was boredom. Denny has done this his whole career. He is not the story of the game the team and fans are. Every big game he ever announced he shut his mouth and let the listeners gauge the magnitude of what just happened by reaction of those who are there.
