Hi Jason. You're my hero.

I remember. It was my very first Kansas City Royals game. True story: In the spring, my first in K.C., I'd written a series of columns in the Star demanding the Royals front office give fans discounted prices at concession stands as an apology for the 1994 strike. The Royals acquiesced. I was the toast of drunken, well-fed Royals fans.

LMAO

Great story. You are Legend, Jason.

I agree with the 20 years part of Royals baseball being bad as well. Between 1986 and 1994, they were a competitive team and would have made the playoffs under the current rules.

He teamed up with Western Resources in Topeka to make the bid.

Well, he made a colossal mistake not buying it outright because Glass could probably sell for 600-700 million right now

Hey Jason! Is Michael Wilbon fatter in real life than he is on TV? I've always thought he looked like a dude pushing 3 bills, but nobody can really tell.

Two great articles by former KC Star employees in the past week. Article 1) Posnanski; Article 2) Whitlock. And we're stuck with Mellinger.

Probably but the backlash and public support for new stadium improvements would be harder to get if he ended up with both. Western Resources was trying to merge with Kansas City Power & Light at the time and needed goodwill in the city.

In hindsight even it looked like a smart move by Lamar teaming up with a local company for the bid.

He quotes Boone saying Ape threw 120 pitches 1995 Opening Day an that's why he pulled him in the 7th. That # screamed bullshit to me, and sure enough the official box score only shows 98.

Of course Jason never liked researching claims. That was work. He is more of a storyteller. Boone lied and should've been corrected

Appier could not be touched that day. Two decades later, Boone's memory is a bit faulty. Appier had thrown 98 pitches when Boone removed him. The second-guessing and ridiculing of Abner Boonieday started on Day 1.

3 things.

1. I love that Jason went National but has never forgotten KC, and is still plugged into the pulse of the city.

2. Great article. Holy shit to this part, I thought Lamar was smarter and had more foresight than that. But the Royals' credibility and viability were so low in the late 1990s that a New York carpetbagger thought he could finesse some Midwest rubes. Beloved Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt couldn't resist taking a stab at getting something for nothing. He put in a formal offer to buy the Royals for $47 million. Hunt thought the Royals were worth less than a billionaire's home.

3. I can't help but ROFL when Chiefsplanet Chiefsplanet's and you get SNR asking Wilbon's weight, and SR asking jwhit if he still gets crunk in the club. That's fucking golden. I can just imagine Jason rolling his eyes no less than 9 times every time he logs in.

I don't go to ESPN nearly as often as I used too. Thanks for coming over and posting it, Jason. It was a great read, and I wouldn't have gotten to enjoy it most likely unless someone else posted it.

I had no idea the Royals had a 13 game lead when the strike hit. JFC that's cruel.

They were 13 games above .500. They were still right behind Cleveland and the White Sox in the standings... but they'd just ripped off 14 wins in a row and had a legit shot at overtaking one if not both for their playoff spots.

Cone/Appier was a great 1-2 punch with Tom Gordon and Gubicza behind them. Hamelin was making an outside run at the team HR record, Joyner/Lind/Gagne/Gaetti was a very good defensive infield. Tons of speed in the OF with Vince Coleman and Brian McRae.

Glad some of you enjoyed it.

Was it you or JoPo that wrote that Carl might be pissed if Lamar bought the Royals he couldn't get a WR because the Royals just signed a 4th outfielder?

I remember one of you wrote that in the Star and got a good laugh.

That team had the starting pitching to do damage in the playoffs, with Pichardo and Monty to finish it off.

That post made me curious so I looked up the final AL standings when the strike hit with about 40 games to go:

East - NY Yankees 70-43
Central - Chicago 67-46
West - Texas 52-62 (That's not a typo)

WC
Cleveland - 66-47
Baltimore - 2.5 GB
Kansas City - 3 GB
Toronto - 12 GB

Royals were 3 back of the WC and 4 back of the division, and were on fire in the 2nd half of the season. Kind of gets lost in history though because everyone talks about the Expos, who had the best record in baseball when the strike hit.

I still say the Royals made a mistake not staying in the AL West.
