Eric Berry's statement regarding his diagnosis
“I am truly thankful for all of the support from family, friends, coaches, teammates and the entire Chiefs kingdom. At first I was in shock with the diagnosis on Saturday and did not even want to miss a game, but I understand that right now I have to concentrate on a new opponent. I have great confidence in the doctors and the plan they are going to put in place for me to win this fight. I believe that I am in God’s hands and I have great peace in that. I know my coaches and teammates will hold things down here the rest of the season and until I am back running out of the tunnel at Arrowhead. I am so thankful and appreciative of being a part of this franchise and playing in front of the best fans in the NFL. I will be back!”

A good friend of mine has had Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

I know it's extremely selfish of me to ask, but is it something that ends his football career for good? What are the chances of him being back next year? I'm lymphoma ignorant.

There are so many factors but the most important is just how aggressive his cancer is and for how long it's been growing.

I think the chances of him playing football next year is about .05%. Chemo and radiation just destroys the body and even if he fully recovers, it's a major challenge for most everyone psychologically.

Unfortunately, cancer goes well beyond the physical, even after 5 years. Every sensation or pin prick or cough will likely lead to him thinking his cancer has returned.

In all honesty, I'm more concerned about his long term health than if he ever returns to the football field but it's possible that his NFL career is over.

My mom was diagnosed with Non hodgkins lymphoma in March of 2013.
I know it had been there a while, same thing, discomfort under her heart, shortness of breath. She was 71 and not in shape like Berry.

The doctor said it was very treatable and the success rate is very high.
It was in remission.

Last year, it came back in her spine and brain. This happens in 8% of patients.
Not the odds you want. Now, it is just a matter of time. It could be any day.

I hope Berry will be fine. If this is like what I said, he should be. Football is a game. Other things matter more vs. football.

11-24-2014, 04:19 PM
A swollen lymph node in the right side of chest is the suspicion?

If a FNA or biopsy hasn't returned yet then cancerous lymphoma shouldn't be the first conclusion.

It is strange he was placed on IR so fast but with a late stage lymphoma you're looking at a host of symptoms and weight loss ect. But perhaps thats why he hadn't been on the field all season.

I hope for the best

I hope for the best but it's just difficult to predict without knowing the results of his biopsy. Some cancers are very slow growing. One of my mom's masses was pegged 12 years ago as pre-cancerous that finally became cancerous. Others can appear "overnight" and spread aggressively.

It's a good thing it was caught but at this point, that's all we really know, so it's hard to make any kind of prognosis.

This is friggin' awful. kcchiefs.com had a story on him on Chiefs Insider, talked about how he was inspired to play by Inky Johnson, who left playing for the Vols after a freak blood clot or something in his chest paralyzed him...goddam.

I sincerely hope and pray that Eric gets past this. Honestly don't care if he plays another down, he's much bigger than football, and worth a lot more to the world just being the man he is. This sucks hard...

It would certainly f me up if I was his teammate - hell, I'm crushed hearing the news as a fan, and I've never met the guy.

Just when we were all feeling sorry for ourselves having lost to the Oakland Raiders you get a little perspective on life. Berry has been my favorite Chief since we drafted him. Something about the way his personality came off in interviews and on TV really made me want to root for him, regardless of how well he was doing. It's not that I wouldn't care if I didn't think he was a good guy, but it has hit me harder because of it. The statement he released only reinforces my feeling.

It goes without saying I want him to get healthy first. For his sake I would love to see him play again at some point in his life, whether its for us or if he is even good wouldn't really matter. Would just like to not see this end his career, but obviously there are bigger things its threatening right now, so godspeed Eric.

Lymphoma is very beatable. My grandson was diagnosed with stage 2 non-hodgkins lymphoma at 21 months and went through 6 months of chemo before being declared cancer free. Depending on what stage he's in, determines the probability of a cure. Stage 2 had an 80% success rate, stage 3 was 60%, and stage 4 was 40%. Catching it early will likely give him a high chance of survival. The primary downfall is chemo is a b**** on your immune system, it kills several good cells in order to attack the bad ones. Neupogen (sp) shots can add a temporary boost, but getting your body to produce igg cells on its own can be a problem.

Masses in the anterior portion of the mediastinum can include thymoma, lymphoma, pheochromocytoma, germ cell tumors including teratoma, thyroid tissue, and parathyroid lesions. Masses in this area are more likely to be malignant than those in other compartments

-wikipedia, but it's a good summary of the differential

Keep in mind we don't know what it is, and "lymphoma" could be Hodgkin (subtype:Nodular Sclerosis (most common), Mixed cellularity, Lymphocyte-rich, Lymphocyte-depleted+staging+risk factors influencing prognosis) or Nonhodgkin (which also has different subtypes and prognostic indicators).

Point is, nobody knows what's going on. I find it slightly careless to float out lymphoma if they don't have a definitive diagnosis and subtype.

This is what I found.

Chiefs safety Eric Berry has been placed in the non-football injury list with a mass on the right side of his chest, team trainer Rick Burkholder told reporters on Monday. Burkholder told reporters Berry did not experience discomfort until the Oakland game on Thursday.

The team believes what Berry has right now is lymphoma. He is expected to go to Emory University hospital for further evaluation. According to coach Andy Reid, Berry addressed his teammates before leaving the team.

"Right now, he needs to be a beast. He'll attack this," coach Andy Reid said.

Berry released the following statement: "I am truly thankful for all of the support from family, friends, coaches, teammates and the entire Chiefs kingdom. At first I was in shock with the diagnosis on Saturday and did not even want to miss a game, but I understand that right now I have to concentrate on a new opponent. I have great confidence in the doctors and the plan they are going to put in place for me to win this fight. I believe that I am in God's hands and I have great peace in that. I know my coaches and teammates will hold things down here the rest of the season and until I am back running out of the tunnel at Arrowhead. I am so thankful and appreciative of being a part of this franchise and playing in front of the best fans in the NFL. I will be back!"

The announcement that he had a mass and was going to miss the rest of the season is fine.

Floating lymphoma though? Say he has a mass, known as a "mediastinal" mass and maybe briefly describe it. But floating out the worst case scenario, which itself is an umbrella term, creates more confusion than clarification.

I am truly saddened as a Chiefs fan that once again, we are dealing with a difficult situation for one of our players.

From Joe Delaney to Derrick Thomas to Jovan Belcher and now Eric Berry, it puts the game of football back into perspective and shows that true life has a way of getting in the middle of fun.

Hope things are not as awful as they initially sound and it probably is a big factor in his declining on field performance.

This is still one of my favorite Eric Berry stories. Classy guy.

University of Tennessee managers would always wash, clean, paint and apply logos to helmets before games on Saturday. The managers with the most seniority would apply the decals, while the newest would have to scrub and paint over any scratches on the helmet. Eric Berry said he wanted to give back to the guys that do so much for the players, therefore he would be found washing and painting the Tennessee helmets before game day because he didn't feel like he deserved to jump their hierarchy.

And you can't diagnose this cancer with tests. If cancer is the answer, tissue is the issue. You need a biopsy with/without immunohistochemical staining depending on what you see initially.

My mother had Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and had to go thru stem cell and donor stem cell two different times. She has it at 65, came back and had to do donor when she was 67 and is now to years cancer free.

I have read and gone to MD Anderson and KU and have a lot of knowledge in this area considering it was all I could think about for three years of my life.

If he ha Hodgkin's lymphoma then that's actually much better than Non-Hodgkin's because its easier to predict where its going next. Usually Hodgkin's lymphoma happens with kids but adults can get it too.

If its Hodgkin's and the cancer reacts well to the drugs then he could be back next year if he wanted to. If its Non-Hodgkin's then its much more invasive and his odds would be very low.

At this point the only thing that matters is that he takes care of himself and get well. God Speed Eric..

That's not actually true. Depending on the cancer, doctors can biopsy and test lymph nodes for cancer during surgery.

This happened during both my wife's and mother's cancer surgeries. Fortunately in both cases, the lymph nodes were negative for cancer so further surgery and treatment wasn't necessary.

That what happens though. You forget these guys are human and start playing Madden with their lives, especially when you have a "bubble" team.

I've had to learn to detach myself from sports over the last couple of years.

It's sad to think that this has been compounding in him and may be part of why we've all been riding his ass as of late.

Now I feel bad. No wonder he hasn't been playing stellar.

Good luck, Eric. This is way more important than a stupid game.

With pain in the chest it sure would make sense as to why you be less aggressive both running and especially hitting.

I hope this turns out to be something benign, and I wish young people in particular could carry on without worries like this.

lonewolfEd....make a YouTube video with your message

That is a great idea but likely beyond my old computer with Windows Vista's capabilities. It's beyond mine, to be honest! I did send him a message on Facebook, but I know he is going to be flooded with them. I just hope he does see it. I told him about me and how overwhelming it all is in the beginning and offered him my advice and wished him the best.

You shouldn't feel guilty because neither you or me or anyone, even Berry himself, knew.

Now, if you were to say that after today announcement, then yeah, feel guilty. :D

Lymphoma is very serious and very deadly. He's probably looking at a year's worth of chemo and radiation. That's just awful news for the kid.

On the brightside, I had a friend diagnosed with lymphoma that just recently passed his five year milestone. On the other hand, I have a female friend in which it's come back twice after five years.

Godspeed, Eric Berry.

First off... I know his health is most important. And I know all cases aren't the same and his sport is not as hard on the body. But a reason for optimism is that Jon Lester the pitcher got diagnosed in August of '06, and in December of '06 the lymphoma had completely remissed and he made it to spring ball.

Again I know his health is most important.. I just hope to see him back healthy and doing what he loves

FWIW, Mario Lemieux returned after radiation for Hodgkins and put up the best per-game numbers of his career in that season, and after falling behind in the scoring race by 12 points, won it by 12 points.

You know what? Ive actually met Eric on several occasions when I worked for Rocco and Nate in 2012. I also worked for the Chiefs when the Jovan Belcher tragedy happened. In fact leaving from work one day I saw Jovan and Cassandra fighting in their Bentley as they left the practice facility, which was the Wednesday before the tragedy. Eric has always been pretty cool to everyone. I wish nothing but the absolute best for him.

Knew that.

Does the NFL rule stipulate you have to be at 53 players by the end of the day or did Berry get put on the NFI list before it was announced and Williams was signed or something?

Mine was a joke, prior to them announcing the whole lymphoma thing. Contrary to popular belief, Berry leaving the team because of the Ferguson decison was never a realistic theory.

You ****ing retard.

Can you get lymphoma by having someone stick fingers up your ass? Big fucking fingers too. Huge hands, right?

You should stop trying to be funny, because it's not working.

I talked to my father, who is a retired gastroenterologist who has, however, diagnosed lymphoma many times, told me:

1) It's possibly a benign mass such as a slow growing granuloma or a sarcoid tumor.

That's the best case. If so, Berry might play again.

2) Even in the best case, he will require treatment, and expects they would perform surgery to remove the mass.

3) He wonders why they floated the lymphoma diagnosis. Perhaps they believed that him seeing a lymphoma specialist would get out and people would presume. He says you can't diagnose it from tests. Need to biopsy.

4) If it's lymphoma, he doubts Berry plays again. He says non-hodgkin's lymphoma rarely has a mass, so he presumes it will be hodgkin's lymphoma if it is indeed cancerous.

Rule of thumb is s 70% cure rate.

He also says that in young patients, its more likely to be aggressive, but young patients also will be able to stand rigorous chemo so are more likely to survive BUT,

he also says if it's located in the lung cavity, that's the "bad" type. Also, in most lymphoma cases even if they are cured, they will probably need periodic chemo for the rest of their life---which is why he doubts Berry will play again.

If not curable, they usually can give patients 15 to 17 years of life with treatment.

All of this will depend on the specific type and stage, which you will only know after biopsy.

I was fortunate enough to see him speak at a banquet earlier this year. I donned my Chiefs cap when he was speaking, felt like a 12 year old worshiping his hero, and it was awesome. He is a very high character guy and I wish him all the best in his recovery.

Prayers for a full recovery!!!!!! And for all of you touched by cancer or with a loved one in that spot.
