View Full Version : Science 1795 Time Capsule Being Opened.

I have a number of thoughts and questions about this.

First, did the people in 1855 actually open it or did they just find it? Since we don't know what's in it, were those people in 1855 the most selfless people ever to just put it back?

Second, why did the 1855 people put it back instead of putting it into a museum?

Third, will the 2014 people put it back?

Fourth, why do they think it was installed by Samuel Adams and Paul Revere? Are there historical documents that mention a time capsule?

Fifth, wouldn't it be cool if the time capsule had something interesting, like another 10 Bill of Rights Amendments and some other major documents? "Hey, wait. The Bill of Rights now guarantees us all 40 acres of land? And all British women must be topless? And wait, look at this. There's a state called West Georgia where part of Alabama is."

Crew unearths Boston time capsule from Paul Revere era
By Todd Leopold, CNN

(CNN) -- A crew is at work in Boston unearthing a time capsule believed buried by Samuel Adams and Paul Revere.

The 18th-century capsule was left in a cornerstone of the Massachusetts State House, CNN affiliate WBZ reports. The capsule is believed to date from 1795, when construction started on the building.

The cornerstone has been removed and a worker from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston was chipping away at it Thursday morning to get at the capsule.

It's a painstaking process, reports WBZ NewsRadio reporter Carl Stevens.
The capsule was last dug up during emergency repairs to the State House in 1855 and put back in place when the cornerstone was reset, according to State House News Service. It likely contains a collection of coins, an engraved silver plate, newspapers and other artifacts, the news service reported.

So far, a single coin has fallen out.

I think it would be hilarious if Revere and Adams used the capsule to take shits in for months on months, with the intention of people digging it up 300 years later looking for something historically groundbreaking.

Fourth, why do they think it was installed by Samuel Adams and Paul Revere? Are there historical documents that mention a time capsule?

(Massachusetts Secretary of State William) Galvin says both time-capsule events -- in 1795 and in 1855 -- were chronicled in detail, and said his office is looking into whether the box will be reinstated and whether new items from the current era will be added to the box and reburied.

http://www.cnn.com/2014/12/11/us/boston-time-capsule-paul-revere-sam-adams/

My assumption is that they will add some contemporaneous stuff and re-bury it. Imagine putting in a flash drive with all kinds of data, and in 100 years they dig it up and nobody can access it because that has become such incredibly obsolete technology...
