View Full Version : Life What are some things young teens can do in Kansas City?

TinyEvel

I have an opportunity to bring my family to KC the weekend of the Chargers game.

I kind of need to sell them on the idea. I'm looking for suggestions for places to go/ areas to visit/things to do. We'd be there two days and I really want to make the city seem hip and alive with lots of cool things to do, mostly arts and culture stuff: art/music/comedy/theaters/museums/activities. We're talking about 8th and 9th grade girls.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Do these girls eat barbecue?

Also, they have a nice art museum there from what I remember on my last visit.

I expected some level of snark and asshattery from this group but this is a serious question.

I took my kids to the Great Wolf Lodge there which is basically a water park inside a hotel but they loved it. At the time they were a little bit younger than your girls are now but take a look.

My family was very impressed with the HS Truman Presidential Museum & Library when we were up there last. Quite modern and intuitive. The Toy museum is fun too. Also, the Modern Art museum. I would say The Legends in KCK for shopping, but not if its cold.

If the weather cooperates. we'll be headed up that weekend too.

Last time we went down, we spent some time at Union Station and did the King Tut tour, it was pretty nice and there was also some big art contest exhibit at the time. WWI museum is across the road and it's just a few blocks from the Boulevard Brewery, but you'll need your tour tickets in advance for that. We were also pretty impressed with the city market but I can't say what it would be like this time of year, and Steamboat Arabia is down there too. Plaza lights. Let them roam around Crown Center.

WW1 museum is incredible, very immersive. My son loved it at age 9. College basketball experience is great downtown. Downtown also has Pin up Bowl and AMC theater with the reclining chairs and food service.

Crown Center is nice with all the Christmas decorations and there are probably some shops in there they would enjoy. That area also has the outdoor ice skating and Union Station isn't far either. I am not sure if they have any exhibit right now but the Egypt one and the Titanic one were cool.

They have new arcade games, Rolling Stones Pinball, Iron Man Pinball, and Pac-Man Battle Royale.

Coterie Theater in crown center has a holiday play, may be a bit young for young teens, but they are always good there.

Unfortunately the Nutcracker ends at Kauffman center just before that, so there isn't anything there. It is worth a walk around if you luck into a nice weather day. KC Repertory Theater is also on a break at that time unless you get there friday night and can get tickets to the closing night of A Christmas Carol.

There is also a walking tour of downtown public art that is surprisingly good, and you can check The Pitch for special events happening. If there are any comedy events Pitch would list those as well. http://www.pitch.com/

Plenty of great museums, big and small.

Forgot another. They sometimes have holiday themed historical society events at the Harris-Kearney House. It is a nice tour as well. Donation funded so it is not as grand as the Kansas City museum.
