the funny thing about today is with Alex Smith is ...

had he not missed that pass to Wilson (which was awful), I'd have a hard time figuring out how he had a bad game.

Lindley for 'Zona? This is a wretched game.

Alex? Alex made a lot of good plays today. He missed a very important one and it killed us. That's why he's Alex Smith and not Ben Roethlisberger. That's why we'll continue to be 8-8 - 11-5 and never win anything important with Alex Smith.

But people are overreacting pretty heavily to how Alex played today. Jamaal Charles had a worse game than Alex Smith.

I don't think just that one play was the sum total of his poor play. It may be difficult to quantify "pant shits" (with this O-line he has a right to fear for his life), and missing open people (prolly because he's a scared white guy on most plays), but I think his game lacked for more than that one HUGE fuck-up (that an NFL QB should only make once in a career and he makes every week).

it wasn't great by any means

but

we punted twice

zero times in the first half ... one time Bowe dropped a TD pass, one time Fisher decided to not block on 4th and 1

Smith played a pretty good 1st half. Maybe one of his better halves, really. The fact we only scored 6 points wasn't on Smith IMO

the 2nd half? The Wilson throw was terrible. That's one you can't miss. That took his A- grade to a C+ right then and there.

The Charles fumble finished it for us. We all know Smith can't play when we're down 10+

I'd be totally shocked if Seattle isn't in the Super Bowl.

I think 4 AFC teams will have a shot. The only AFC team I can't see going to the Super Bowl is overrated Indianapolis.

I could see any one of Denver, Cincy, New England or Pitt getting to the Super Bowl. And I don't even know where I'd rank them. The big dogs (NE and Den) aren't really playing inspiring football IMO.

It's been four weeks (this is the fifth) ...

and they've played

Drew Stanton
Colin Kaepernick
Mark Sanchez
Colin Kaepernick
Ryan Lindley

So yeah, their defense and Bobby Wagner are good. Really good.

But ...

Let's not pretend like they've shut down Tony Romo and Aaron Rodgers over the past 5 weeks. San Fran, since they no longer let Colin Kaepernick run the read option, is about Arizona bad on offense.

I couldn't stomach another NE, DEN, GB, PIT, BAL Super Bowl winner.

Cowboys fans haven't shut their yap about their Bowl wins in the 90s. The last thing they need is another.

I don't think Arizona, San Diego, Atlanta/Carolina or Indy even have a shot at winning it.

Matt Stafford is a douche so that's a no-go.

I'll be rooting for the Seahawks or the Packers, looks like..

The NFC, the way I look at it, is this:

Seattle 50%
Green Bay 35%
Dallas 15%

We'd probably have 2 or 3 less wins with Flacco at QB. I'm not kidding. He's garbage.

Fair point.

Still, these are NFL offenses we're talking about with some good talent (mostly Philly and San Fran). Despite the fact that Sanchez blows, Philly offenses always put up a ton of yards and they got absolutely dismantled by Seattle.

Less than 7 points and and 180 yards of total offense is incredible.

someone go look up Warrick Dunn and T.J. Duckett's #'s with Mike Vick at QB back in Atlanta ...

Lynch is really good.

He also gets the benefit of playing in a read option system with a QB who is going to run for damn near 1000 yards who defenses have to plan for and contain ... making it exponentially easier to be the running back

Jamaal Charles is a better NFL RB than Marshawn Lynch.

I don't know if the SF media are a bunch of Harbaugh marks or a bunch of pussies but if I was a reporter down there I would demand, each and every week, Harbaugh explain to me why the read option is no longer a part of their offense, and why they insist on making Kaepernick a pocket QB when his greatest threat is his running ability.

It's absolutely baffling and one of the worst coaching jobs I've ever seen in my life. And someone is going to give that guy the keys to a franchise or a collegiate program? Yeah, I'm sure he'll do fine ... but the stubbornness he showed this year with Kaepernick and taking away his best play makes me think I wouldn't want him anywhere near my NFL franchise.

how does an NFL RB not show up for big games?

Do you realize how fast the game is ... and how insane that comment is?

He's a RB. Not a QB.

We gave him 9 carries today. 9.

You think, JUST MAYBE, the fact we can't throw the ball down the field greatly reduces the room Jamaal has to run?

I have been reading this all day today after the game that "Jamaal isn't a big game back."

It's literally some of the dumbest tripe I've ever heard in my life. It's nonsense.

The fumble was bad. That wasn't because he was 'scared' or 'nervous' or 'can't handle pressure' ... it's because he's been doing that all year long. He's been careless. And he was careless again today.

I can't stand some of the shit that is said around here after losses. It's insane. I bet 80% of this board would trade Alex Smith straight up for Ryan Lindley and probably throw in a 2nd round pick as well.

I don't believe that at all.

I think he's a top 5 - top 10 NFL RB. But what does that really mean? I don't even know. The RB position is totally devalued to me.

He averages 4.3 YPC with Russell Wilson. That's pretty good. He makes some 'wow' runs. Good back.

Jamaal Charles has averaged 5.5 YPC (or close) for every carry his ENTIRE career.

So when you have morons who watch 1 freaking run by Marshawn Lynch when he gets the benefit of having a QB who keeps ends from crashing the line and they all declare "Jamaal Charles is no 'BEAST MODE'" it makes me want to gag.

I never said he's better than Jamal Charles. I said he's a great weapon back there. I'm 100% sure his numbers are better with Wilson back there. It's a mutual relationship. Put 2008 Larry Johnson back there with Wilson and see what happens. Lynch is not "made" by Wilson, he's had the same talent he's always had... even with Matt Hasselbeck at QB.

Hootie
12-21-2014, 10:40 PM
let me add to my Lynch rant

Clearly, he's the best back on Seattle. He's really good.

But, I'm pretty sure I'd still consider Seattle the heavy favorite in the NFC without Lynch at RB this year (say he got hurt).

The RB position just doesn't even matter. The Cowboys are fine with Dunbar and Randle and no Murray.

Guys like Jamaal are still special because Jamaal is still such a threat in the passing game ... and he has a skillset no one else in the NFL really has with his speed, agility and surprising power for a small guy

It depends. Larry was always kind of a pussy when it came to getting past the front line. For a big guy, he was never, ever a power back. Back when Priest was getting 2/3 of the work in 2005 was the only time I ever saw Larry run ANGRY. Like, attack the LOS. After that? He was always best when he got to the 2nd level. 2008 Larry would have been pretty effective in a read option system.

I don't think Lynch is back with Seattle in 2015. I think whoever gets the lead back role probably puts up Marshawn Lynch numbers for Seattle in 2015.

In baseball terms, what is Lynch's WAR? 0.5? Is Seattle a half win better with Lynch than without Lynch?

I honestly don't know. I just don't think he means that much to that team.

I might take Russell Wilson over any single QB for the 2014 postseason. It's either Wilson or Rodgers. For me, it's a toss up. Brady and Manning won't be able to beat a pass rush. Rodgers struggles against a rush as well.

Russell will be the only guy in the postseason that can win a game under any circumstance. He can win in the pocket, he can win running the ball, he can win scrambling around and buying time with his feet ...

Luck fucks up too much. I think Indy is 1 and done this year.

I can honestly say I think the two best NFL QB's in this year's postseason will be Rodgers and Wilson. Peyton looks ... old and Tom can't handle a pass rush.

I don't know why you're arguing that with me. I think defense is just important as the offense. Doesn't matter if it's Brady, Manning, Rodgers. Elite QB's can't win a title by themselves. None of them. I've never wavered from that idea, and certainly not watching this Seattle team. I don't believe Wilson is as good a QB as Manning, and he obliterated him in the Super Bowl last year.

Stanton

Sanchez
Lindley

so 4 of those games came against Arizona who has lost their QB and their version of Jamaal Charles and San Fran, who has a locker room that hates their head coach and a coordinator that refuses to call the only play Kaepernick excels at running ... the same play that Russell Wilson repeatedly rapes the NFL with

It doesn't matter who the QBs were... and they played some very good offensive coaches in Arians and Chip Kelly. You hold NFL offenses to those numbers, that's an accomplishment.

I'm right on board with you with Manning. I think it's the story no one is talking about. His arm has looked shot for a month. But their defense and running game has been doing a good job. It might be able to carry them through the AFC.

Hootie
12-21-2014, 11:01 PM
the Steelers are only a threat because the AFC is that wide open

the Steelers are not that good. They can't defend the pass, at all.

I'd love to see a NE/Den AFCCG just because I'd love to see it one more time ... but I could see anyone getting through the AFC ... the Pats almost lost to the Jets today.

Both Tom and Peyton get beat in cold weather playoff games like clockwork now.

Luck looks awful, and has looked awful, for about 6 weeks now.

Shit. Cincinnati might make it if Jeremy Hill keeps running like crazy. Maybe Pitt, sure. Maybe fucking Baltimore because apparently Joe Flacco transforms from terrible dick face QB in the regular season to having a damn shamrock up his butthole.

But yeah.

NFC?

I'd be stunned if it wasn't one of the top 3 seeds (assuming it's Seattle / GB / Dal). And I think Seattle is basically a lock if I had to guess. They are just the most complete team and if the defense has a bad day I think Russell is capable of putting in that beast mode performance especially when it's playoff football and he's allowed to run whenever he wants.
